Recently I've had some issues with my 360. I think it decided that it would rather kill itself than let me play Viva Piñata ... but that was its decision not mine. So, I sold it "as-is" and picked me up a new one locally, pretty new box and all! Though I noticed an interesting quirk after playing Gears recently. I noticed something that didn't happen on my previous 360 model. When playing Gears, throughout multiplayer (specifically when sitting in a lobby), the humming of the disc drive couldn't be heard, because the spinning of the disc actually slowed down. My previous Xbox 360 kept rotating the disc full speed, never missing a step, and never altered the spin speed ever. My spiffy new 360 must be uber smart and knows when it doesn't have to spin at 400 MPH, thus creating a moment of silent bliss. At first it startled me as I wondered why the disc quit spinning, but now it's just a welcomed surprise to hear the quiet. Does your 360 spin down when playing certain games or am I just drinking too much Pepto-Bismol?
Update 1: It looks like I found the answer to my perplexion! Previously, my other console was rocking a Hitachi DVD drive (the more common LOUD version) as opposed to the Samsung model (which is known to be quieter and more rare). I checked out my new console and it looks like I have a Samsung DVD drive in my 360. This could be why certain games read differently by slowing down etc. Let's do some more investigative work ... anyone whose disc drive spins down during games (like mine) head over to Llamma's site and verify which drive you have. I'm thinking this is how the Samsung drive works, but we'll get to the bottom of this as a team. Teamwork FTW!

Dont get to used to it, my new one from Oct. 2006 did the same thing, only to revert to old standards in under a week.

Bought my X360 in Feb06... mine only spins full tilt during certain game loads.
Now that I have DolbyDigital 5.1 (gotta love powered subs), I don't hear anything else so it's kind of a moot-point for me.
Good to hear you got a good X360 dude.

Mine never stops, I got it within the first month of launch. It drives me nuts sometimes, but as long as I am playing the game at a normal volume I don't notice it.

Gears of War in multiplayer is the only time both of my Xbox 360's slow down spinning. Must just be the game.

My Drive gets very quiet because it stops and then I get a “This disc is unreadable” error message while in the middle of a game of Gear, very frustrating. Anyone else have this problem? I have this problem happen maybe once or twice a day. I never have the problem when I just put the disc in or just turn on my box, it only happens in the middle of a game or waiting in the lobby before the match starts. I got my first Xbox 360 on launch that lasted about 10 months so this one I have now is fairly new. Not sure if it is a bad disc of Gears I have or my fairly new Xbox 360 has a hardware component that is malfunctioning as stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/909819
Any thoughts?

I have my xbox 360 vertical, and when I play gears it is usually spinning insanly fast, I think that it's good that it spins full speed the whole time because the noise of the game covers that and it gets better speed in the game because it doesnt have to re spin it all the time, I got mine only a few months ago, Is vertical actually worse for the 360 because i think it spins the disc faster since its vertical

I bought mine last month. I was wondering why people complain about how loud they are. I hardly ever hear the system outside of start-up.

My first 360 had a Dec 2005 manufacture date, it was usually loudest during Oblivion play.. and during loading.. every now and then the drive would slow down and it would be quiet for a while.. I recently had to send my 360 in for repair cuz the DVD Disc tray was acting up and wouldn't eject proper.. it wasn't a big deal, but I had the MS Extended Service Contract so I figured might as well put it to use. They sent me all the packing stuff free of charge and in about a week I got the 360 back and they sent me a newer one, I think the Manufacture date on it was June 2006, this one is overall much quieter and even playing Oblivion it's much quieter.. and so far I've had no issues with the system (First one would freeze up sometimes during Dead Rising & Oblivion play) And in th end the 5.1 sound covers up about 95% of the 360 sound.. so it's never been a real issue for me.

to #7: I know this might sound stupid, but you should try flashing your console. I was getting lots of read errors on mine, and since I dont live in the USA, sending it over there for repairing was not an option. I specially got the recognized as DVD error, where you see the small video saying you should put it in an xbox 360 console. I flashed the drive and the reading problems stoppped completely with my original games. Way faster and cheaper than sending the console for repairs :)
To author, mine slows down too, it's a Samsung.

I play with the sound on so I have never noticed it running. I'll listen next time I boot up gears.

I had a Hitachi (launch) but it got bricked with the fall update. Microsoft agreed to replace it after I whined for a few days on-line and over the phone, and I got a Samsung back. Both had "gear shifts" in spin speed, but the Samsung seems to shift down a lot more often.
FOr example the drive was slow-spinning for almost 30 minutes as I strolled acroos Oblivion. This is confusing especially, becaus eI hit at least 10 load spots during theat time and saw plenty of new landscape load in- but never and change in disk speed until I spoke to an NPC and it had to read audio records.
I think the drive speed is actually fully controlled by the software of each individual game.

Oh well, at least it's not "System Wars" on Gamespot. That would've been bad.

I've sent four Xbox360's back, and I'm on my fifth one now. My present one has the newer samsung dvd drive and yes I have noticed that my drive does spin down during some games, especially Gears of War. And at times it is actually quieter.

I have a launch system with a Hitachi drive, and it is constantly spinning and loud during some games (especially Oblivion). Cranking the speakers to extra-loud isn't an option if you have a wife sleeping in the other room, and so I'm definitely thinking of "upgrading" to the newer model with the Samsung drive.
The trick is finding one on the first try.

Yes I have the same problem. I have a Samsung drive and when I play oblivion it will spin the disk fast. Then sometimes it will slow down and then when I try to do something major like load something, or get in a fight, or basically interact with anything I will get the dirty disc read error. And I know my disc is just fine. God this kind of reminds me when I had an xbox with the crappy Thompson drive in it.

Sorry to sound like a n00b. But what does flashing a hard drive mean?

@ #7, my friend had the same problem with his, but it didn't read any disks at all. He called MS, and they told him to send it to them so they could fix it- its new btw. He ended up exchanging it for another one.
@ #9, I don't know if you have a freak 360, but every 360 I have ever heard is pretty loud.

I think it's great you've got yourself a quiet new system. I'll be honest, I've had a 360 since launch and I've never had any problems with the unit being loud. I even had my first one go down on me and MS sent me a brand new one. Both were quiet for me. I have the Hitachi drive in mine.

This topic is a moot point, through the power of habituation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habituation
If your still noticing the noise of your fan and/or disc drive, then you need to concentrate on the game more!
Or buy a 600watt 5.1 system and crank it up to 50%.
