Crackdown screens are promising

Today Xboxygen got their hands on some new screen grabs of the upcoming 360 game Crackdown. The art style for this game looks somewhat cartoon based and simplistic, but the screenshots are promising to what amount of interaction you can have with the world. I'm especially fond of the super-human jumping in this game and the random environment destruction, because destruction is so much fun. Keep your eye on Crackdown as it's set to release sometime next year.

[Thanks, Gaetge]

1. Looks kinda noob :S

They should call it Cackdown.

I've seen better explosions on Nes.

2. haha....those screens are terrible! Look at how blocky his fingers are....those are some crappy graphics. Maybe I am just too entwined in GOW graphics....so beautiful.....

3. I agree that some of those models could use a few more polygons. I do like the particle effects that are going on in some of the pictures though.

4. Go watch the trailers, they look better than these pics but seriously, these arent that bad.

5. Character design is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They look like gay raver bikers! I'm the target audience for this game, and I never even want to play it by the look of these screens. Please delete this game for the design and graphics alone.

6. now that I look at it again thats cell shading and isn't part of the allure of cell shading? The cartoonish level of the graphics would be outta place though.

7. quit being graphics whores when the premise was described, you should be able to go "well fu*k that" not when you see graphics that aren't up to your standards graphics don't make the game, but apparently they make you people pay $60

8. Well the way ppl are bigging up gfx this gen mr.truth and saying it is anything and everything, these are just......well.....pathetic :) lol

9. This is the sort of game you have to see in motion to understand. Screenshots fail. Seeing the game in motion you realize you can climb any building, See details on the horizon like cars moving. This game has some serious graphics technology.

10. Well I for one am looking forward to it. The gameplay sounds like a lot of fun and don't forget the online co-op.

I'm thinking Saint's on steroids, with co-op play!

11. This game is going to have a great physics engine and a very unique style of graphics plus the shared co-op (being able to absorb powers from your friends when they're in your game, etc.) will be outstanding. A great game doesn't have to have GEARS level textures to be fun but unfortunately eveyone will compare everything to GEARS now that they're all whorring it out. I don't judge games by graphics or screenshots, but prefer to see the game in motion and if you've seen the vids to this game, you wouldn't be posting here yapping about GEARS.

12. i dont think crackdown will do aswell as it deserves.
crazy really when i think this is one of the games that sold me on the 360 .
been waiting for years for a snadbox game to open up a bit more , what could be more fun than leaping across rooftops ?

13. i think there's one glaring flaw with the graphics front. Just from the list of images on the linked site, it appears they're going for both a cell shaded look while keeping a strong depth to their graphics. Usually these things don't go hand and hand. Take 13 and the ultimate spiderman, both are heavy on cell shading to dipict a comic book style. Flattening the image in the process. Comic book images have depth but are distinctly visually different then looking at most game engines being used. Here it seems the makers wanted the best of both worlds, cell shading for the comic look as well as a high level of model detail. The problem is that certain elements arn't meshing together well and making the viewer see it as if it's something else.

If you look at it hard enough it's there, the graphical concept they were going for is there and rather enjoyable. It appears, to me anyways, that it looks like a action comic book that just didn't mesh over to a 3d engine as fully as I personally would of liked.

Some geometry looking too flat or a border edge that's giving some weird jaggys. And the fingers are bad. I'm sorry but it's true. The character models are actually pretty good if you don't bother with the fingers and squint your way past some of the jaggys around the eyes.

It's true that screen shots don't tell the full story of what a game is. That's why there are reviews and game synapses, and hopefully a demo :D. But screenshots are meant to show off the game visually, to tell us, "this game IS being made, and THIS is what it looks like." I just think they had a few bad pics for shots that had a bad angle of an unbumpmapped roof.

or what looks like two different games pasted together
http://www.xboxygen.com/upload/Gallery/crackdown64.jpg
a shot that could be brought back together, the background and character elements linked visually by a different explosion. More fire and smoke then transparent to better fit the concept of cell shading. The explosion just doesn't fit in a quasi cell shaded world even if it's just meant to be a lite smoke bomb or something similar.

14. do i really need to quote the old Gameplay>graphics ?
the sandbox genre has been waiting on something like crackdown comming out , and its from the guy who started it all for gods sake .
if cell shading make's it possible for me to have an open world game where everything is interactive and i can climb any building in the thing , then bring on the cell shading .

if this is pulled off right (which i dont doubt , they are brits afterall;) ) i know for a fact that i will get more hours out of this than any other 360 game so far ... untill mass effect.

15. I didn't mean to say that the game wouldn't be good, all I am saying is that now that I have seen Gears, the graphics on that are incredible, looking at Crackdown, the fingers are squared off, and there are a lot of jagged lines. For it being next gen, it doesn't look spectacular. But again, I am not comparing to Gears in gameplay, it may be a blast, I will have to wait and see once it comes out. But knowing about it, and what the gameplay is, it sounds interesting, but I don't know how excitingly fun it will be.
