Some schmo already has Gears of War? [Updated]

Dutiful 360 Fanboy reader, AlexH, spotted a suspicious photo on Flickr. Uploaded by user, Brymo, the picture claims to show off his 360 game collection. No big deal there. Lots of people host pictures of their hobbies, collections, etc. There is one little issue, though. Almost halfway up the stack is a copy of Gears of War. You know, the blockbuster game that's not supposed to emerge until November 7th at the earliest. So, we have three possibilities. One, he actually has a pre-release copy of GOW. Two, he's joking. Three, he likes to steal display boxes from GameStop. In the words of Judge Judy, don't piss on our leg and tell us it's raining. 'Fess up, Brymo, if that is your real name.

[Update]

Brymo has spoken. He says it's just the box that came with a t-shirt when he pre-ordered at Best Buy. See our follow-up post.

1. Yay you posted it.

2. When you pay $5 to preorder GoW at Best Buy you get a box for it, and a t-shirt.

At least I'm pretty sure you get a box. So that's option #3.

3. Best Buy is selling pre orders that has a GOW box and a shirt. It's probably just that.

Posted at 5:14PM on Oct 29th 2006 by TheH2s

4. Is it just me or does the Tony Hawks American Wasteland underneath of GoW look a little odd. Not to mention that GoW is in the middle of his game stack and not on top? Who would play Fifa Road to the World Cup / Ridge Racer before GoW

Posted at 5:14PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Hal

5. That box is from a Best Buy he pre-ordered the game and got a free T-Shirt, the box cover would have given it away thats why its in the middle, nice try though.

Posted at 5:18PM on Oct 29th 2006 by hideawa

6. Maybe this is just a picture of empty display boxes at a Gamestop.

7. # 5 IS RIGHT

8. People from benelux (not sure if you can order from outside) that want a cheapass GoW.

Here it is for 5euro.

9. For what its worth my Gears of War box from Best Buy (pre-order with t-shirt) has the same digits on the side.

U19
00001

I doubt the display case and the retail case would have the same numbers.

Posted at 6:40PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Josh Smith

10. Yep, had to be from Best Buy. The cases you get with a pre-order look completely real except for the words "FOR DISPLAY ONLY" written in small green letters on the front.

11. if u pe order from the distributer u get it 1-2 weeks early like saints row and test drive but im not sure if they did it for GOW

12. some schmo has to much money

Posted at 8:03PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Nate

13. Yeah, I was going to mention the Best Buy pre-order. My friend just picked it up for the free t-shirt and they give you an empty GoW box. Why? I dunno.

Posted at 8:05PM on Oct 29th 2006 by xfan

14. I had no idea this picture would have been such a huge event.

Here is the story. I bought the BestBuy pre-order thing - for the shirt. I go home to make sure the shirt is my size, so as I took the shirt out, and laid my dead rising game and the gears box on top of my stash, just habit.

A friend came over, and went through my games to find something to play - thus the game went towards the bottom.

I posted this picture in my thread at TeamXbox (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=480057)

Showing my "addiction" of buying video games. I forgot about the gears box even being in the middle of the mix. This of course turned huge when I got PM's, comments about how did I get the game already.

I stated I believe 2-3 times in that thread that it was truly the pre-order box that comes with the shirt. I guess no one read or wanted to believe that.

15. Also, no need to say anything about me stealing - I consider that pretty much libel. Please update your post, or change your last statement.

Thanks

Posted at 9:24PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Brymo

16. "I consider that pretty much libel."

A lawyer wouldn't.

Posted at 10:04PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Rob H.

17. Yeah they would.

There is an ID, defame message, fault, falsity, and publication.

Trust me, I could.

But, i don't mind, i don't care, just don't like a message having the possibility open that I stole something.

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but would hate to have a problem with someone due to the fact that they thought I stole something.

Posted at 10:20PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Brymo

18. No one thinks you stole anything. It was a statement of a possible way you could have attained a GOW case, not an accusation. Don't cry over it. Enjoy your five minutes of internet fame, and move on. No one's wronged you here.

Posted at 10:25PM on Oct 29th 2006 by What The Geek

19. I can care less. Just letting journalist know that they have to be careful on what they say. In this day and age, it is so easy to get caught with the most simple mistake.

I do not believe they think that, just giving an example. Also, anything that states something that could ruin a rep is libel, that is why they created libel and slander.

This is more of an argument of law, which for some reason I really enjoy. Damn college :p

I am not angry or mad, just surprised this got so out of hand.

Also, I have had too many minutes of "internet fame," when does it stop?

Posted at 10:34PM on Oct 29th 2006 by Brymo

20. Oh by the way, if you do not know by now, I am teasing about the libel :p
