XNA: community arcade revealed

Doubtless, most of you caught this news over on Joystiq but it deserves mention here. Microsoft has announced the release of XNA Game Studio Express, a consumer version of its XNA development tools -- a beta version should be available on August 30th. This will allow homebrew developers to create games for both Windows and the Xbox 360, though a fee will be charged for the 360 functionality. The upshot of all this (surely, most of you are already there) is the ability of the 360 community to actually create the games we'll be seeing on Xbox Live Arcade.

This initial XNA pack -- available for a $99 annual subscription -- will be followed next year with a professional version. The professional version should cost well under $1000 dollars, putting PC and 360 development within the grasp of even the smallest of would be game makers. Users of the XNA platform will also be given access to sample games (and perhaps allow users to trade?) to get the creative juices flowing.

It will probably be a long time before we see your garage game hit the real Xbox Live Arcade, but the possibilities are very exciting. Any adventurous coders out there looking forward to this?

1. Wait? is that packet also needed to download and play the games on my xbox 360? or is the fee just for developing the games.. I sure hope the community arcade games are free.. that's why it's called "community arcade"..

2. From the FAQ I read it seems you need to have the devkit etc installed on your PC and pay the $99/year subscription to be able to use it all. It seems pretty crappy in that respect.

3. I cant wait, i've been trying to break into the industry for a few months now and without having a decent demo to show publishers or developers getting funding/a job is almost impossible. This is a massive step forward in making games development alot more accessable to all kinds of people.

4. For the time being, only those people who pay the $99 a year fee, to join the developers community, will be able to play the games. It creates a smaller community who can put up anything, no matter how bad or terrible. From those games, MS and other companies will be cherry-picking the best for investment and publication on XBLA.

That said, the XNA team themselves want a more open community, and claim to be moving to such a beast in the future, where anyone can opt to run the unsigned code of the XNA development community on their 360. It seems they're primarily worried about opening up the ability, on a large scale, to run unsigned code on the machines, for obvious reasons.

5. The $99/yr gets you the ability to compile binaries signed for YOUR XBox 360 only. If you want to distibute your homebrew, you can only send out the source code and assets, and anyone else with a subscription can compile it to run on their 360. You cannot distribute compiled binaries (as they won't do any good to anyone
else) and you certainly cannot use it to creat/run any sort of homebrew on non-subscribers' boxes.

That said, it appears that you will be able to create and distribute Windows binaries without the subscription.

6. I'll be waiting for VLC Media Player for Xbox360.

7. The reason people have to pay the $99/year to play the games is because MS didn't put the 360 out there for people to play free games. They sell the console at a loss and make up the money on accesories and games. So, if people start buying 360s only to play free games they get off the internet, MS is losing money.

This is why you can play the games for free on your PC. They aren't losing money on PC sales.

8. I believe a member of the XNA team mentioned that they are pushing for the ability to release code that anyone with a 360 can play. Who knows if their desires will win out with management.

I believe they are very security conscious and want to make sure that no one can exploit the 360 for mischievous purposes.

I hope they work it out. These are exciting times. Never has the possibility of playing shitty games on a console been so great.

9. well they did call it the "Youtube for games"... youtube is all free... though there is a Pro version (I believe?) maybe we get to play SOME games for free? i dont know..
