Master Chief, Locust and Marcus ... meet UT3

The Unreal Tournament 3 character modding community is alive, kicking and has a bad case of Xbox 360 envy. So much envy that UT3 community modeler Organ decided to create Master Chief, Locust Horde and Marcus Fenix character mods. And did we mention all the models are teh hawtness? Just take a look at Master Chief above and try to convince us that he wouldn't be your character of choice. Oddly enough, if Epic were to include these models in the "maybe some day" release of UT3 on the 360 we may totally forget about playing custom maps and be happy with these models. Click towards the break to watch a video of the Master Chief model and head towards the jump to check out Mr. Fenix and a Locust Drone. Commence salivating.

GDC08: GoW2's water is going to be freakin' hot! [update]

Update: Thanks to zizzy, we've posted a better, lengthier video showcasing Epic's entire presentation. And not only does the water look hotter than ever, but the Unreal Engine's new destructible environments, beefed up lighting, high density crowds and cube of meat are equally as hot. Man, will GoW2 benefit from destructible enivornments ... simply amazing!

Today, Epic Games showed off the latest build of their hella popular Unreal Engine 3, showcasing the engine's latest additions and enhancements. Their tech demo video complete tech demo video (embedded above) is a real-time, in engine demo of the Unreal Engine's latest feature, Dynamic Fluid Surfaces. And we'll be the first to jump on the Dynamic Fluid Surfaces bandwagon, because this water is HOT! Hot in an "omg that's amazingly hot" kind of way. Even better is the fact that Mr. Marcus Fenix is used to demo the new water effect which pretty much means that A) we're looking at Gears of War 2's engine in the flesh and B) GoW2's water is going to be freakin' hot! Just look at that water ... so delicious.

2K jumps on Unreal Engine 3 train for unnamed titles

Today Epic announced that Take Two Interactive's publishing label 2K Games will be using Unreal Engine 3 to power upcoming and unannounced titles currently in development. Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, told Gamesindustry.biz, "We are excited about continuing our relationship with 2K based on our past success with the company." Rein, who was referring to the success of the Unreal powered BioShock, wasn't the only happy camper in this tale of adoption. "2K had a very positive experience working with Epic's Unreal Engine 3 since it enables games to perform exceptionally well on both console and the PC," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann. Look at that, Unreal adopted by another company. Love the engine, but at this rate General Electric is going to buy a license to start making home appliances. Unreal is taking over the world and when used properly the results are outstanding.

Unreal Tournament 3 to ship with dozens of maps

Over on Beyond Unreal, Death Booger mentions that August's OXM demo disc features a look at a few of the multiplayer maps that'll ship with Unreal Tournament 3. Among the pretty in-game videos are a few details about UT3 including confirmation that the game will ship with three to four dozen multiplayer maps. And, if our math is correct, that works out to be around 36 to 48 multiplayer maps on launch day and on the disc! The maps will of course vary in size, player count, etc., but the shear amount of variety should satisfy any Unreal enthusiast. Here's to hoping the "dozens" remarks holds true when the game ships as that would seriously put Shadowrun's nine maps to shame.

New Unreal Tournament 3 details emerge

Over at the Beyond Unreal forums, Doc Shock translated a German gaming magazine's interview with Jeff Morris about Unreal Tournament 3. From the translation and follow up by TeamXbox we learn that Unreal Tournament 3 will include a co-op option for the campaign, similar to how Gears of War works. They are also implementing voice commands where you'll be able to give a bot simple instructions to carry out, like navigating a vehicle or protecting a base. Morris also confirms that there will be 12 weapons, 15 vehicles, and 30 plus maps to enjoy. And as always, we'll be playing Unreal Tournament 3 on our Xbox 360s "when it's done" ... because that's how Epic rolls.

Unreal Tournament 2007 for 360, new name

Speculated but never officially confirmed, Midway has finally announced that Unreal Tournament 2007 is bound for the Xbox 360, albeit with a new name. Entitled Unreal Tournament III, the game is expected to hit the 360 in the second half of 2007. UT3 (obviously) runs on the Unreal Engine 3 and should delight deathmatch junkies world wide. The game will feature the traditional deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. A third mode, entitled Warfare, will be available as well (perhaps it will function something like Warzone on GOW?). The game looks to feature an expansive campaign mode, too. IGN has the scoop, as well as the first official trailer.

Seriously, we like other consoles. We do. We just can't afford anything else with so many outstanding titles hitting the 360 this year.

Slaying Dinosaurs in Turok, totally Unreal

Xboxyde got a handful of screenshots for the upcoming next gen Turok. The game is running on Unreal Engine 3 (then again, what isn't?) and looks awfully nice. The game pits players against humans, dinosaurs, and -- if previous iterations are anything to go by -- robot dinosaurs. The game supposedly mixes up GOW style cover and some intense melee combat as well. The game isn't coming out until 2007, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Anyone willing to place their confidence in this ailing franchise?

Unreal Tournament 2007 coming to Xbox 360

Not sure if this wasn't planned all along, but the above image from the May 2006 issue of GamePro magazine clearly says Unreal Tournament 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

During Epic's press preview at GDC, Mark Rein said that UT2007 was being developed on both the PC and PS3 platforms; however, Gears of War is obviously being developed on the Xbox 360. Since the Unreal Engine 3 middleware is built for both systems, there is no technical reason the games couldn't be cross ported. GoW is still a 360 exclusive ... for now.

The Gears of War buzzkill post

Earlier today we received several tips pointing us to a user-submitted piece of guesswork by an indiviudal using the nom de guerre "Hedgehog Boy" on gaming site GameDreamZ. He wrote, "One particular game demo that set the net alite [sic] was a 'Gears of War' demo possibly hitting the Marketplace this month! Yeah, the timing is laughably imaginative, but the demo is real, and may be coming sooner than you think."

We've been spared the trouble of effusing skepticism; Epic's Mark Rein responded to the rumors saying, "There is no chance a demo level of Gears is hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace this month, next month or the month after that. We love the Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade and have lots of cool ideas how we can leverage them but not until the game is finished and we don't realistically know when that will be at this point in time."

We weren't spared completely though! The screenshots that we linked to yesterday had been released by Epic's publisher without their permission. Rein said, "They were never intended for release and they don't come anywhere close to representing what the game looks like today." That gets me to my final point:

No demo and no screenshots? Yesterday I wrote "Let's hope the gameplay lives up to the screens." Epic seems to be preempting the hype by playing their hand very close to their vest.
