Joystiq gets Unleashed with Sonic interview

We've heard it before but Sonic's latest title is the franchise's attempt to return the hedgehog to his roots. Looking for more details? Our friends at Joystiq sat down with US Producer for Sonic Unleashed, Patrick Riley, to talk about the little blue bomber and try to get as much information about the series' reboot as possible. Covering everything from night time stages to Werehog Sonic this is a must read for Sonic fans. Could this finally be the triumphant return of Sonic? So far, the game looks great so we're hoping his time in the mud is over!

Sonic Unleashed footage gives us hope

Sonic the Hedgehog is kind of like that old friend who keeps letting you down. You just know he's going to fail again but, because you remember the good old days, you really hope he finally gets it right again. As such, it is with trepidation that we announce that the latest footage from Sonic Unleashed actually looks pretty good, at times even great. It calls up memories of Sonic games past, the old Sonic games, which is a good thing. Purists will no doubt smile at the 2D sections of gameplay and the complete lack of Sonic's cohorts.

Find the footage after break. Now, say it with us -- if we say it loud enough, maybe it will come true -- please be good!

Rumor: Possible Sonic Unleashed Screens

Discovered by some intrepid forum posters, and originating from a Sega FTP site, this collection of images contains what appear to be screenshots of the just discovered Sonic Unleashed. It is of course unknown whether or not these are actually from that game, but the timing seems right, and these images do appear to be in-game, as evidenced by the clipping visible in this shot here. So whatever it is, it's up and running (pun not intended).

As for the shots themselves, they're really clean and have a Blue Dragon quality about them. With locations ranging from Africa to Eggman's lair, and no signs of Sonic's "city" (cursing by rhyme...) friends, could we be seeing signs of a good Sonic game on the horizon? Possibly, if the lack of subtitles is pointing to a more "Subspace Emissary" take on the Sonic cutscenes, with a total lack of dialog, just using animation to tell the story (also similar to the Lego games). The only downside right now appears to be the gameplay screens, which hint at a Sonic and the Secret Rings style of gameplay. At the moment there is still no word as to the platform this will land on, but if it's following the footsteps of Secret Rings, we may have to end up handing this one off.

Sega trademarks Sonic Unleashed

According to a trademark filing found by Kotaku, Sega has "shotgunned" Sonic Unleashed. The filing applies to "video game software [and] computer game programs." Clearly based on that thorough description the newest Sonic game will be a dating simulator.

In all seriousness, this one can't possibly be worse than Sonic's last outing on the Xbox 360 and PS3 - we hope. Also, note that this doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Sonic RPG Bioware is working on. We can't wait to see what Sonic does next. We are so totally serious and not being facetious at all, not really. Oh, and when was Sonic ever leashed.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 co-op not so co-op

Recent purchasers of the XBLA version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the sole purpose of playing online co-op with a friend will be a tad disappointed, angry or both. According to numerous forum posts, websites and our very own Richard Mitchell, the Arcade version of Sonic 2 does not include an option to play co-op over Xbox Live. Now, that wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't for the press release and Xbox.com both stating that the game includes online co-op. But there is a thin strand of gold lining to this story in that the game does include online versus mode, where you can race through specifically made stages against a friend. But if that's SEGA's version of online co-op then damned if they don't need a new descriptor reading "too lazy to implement online co-op, you get versus mode sucka!".

XBLA getting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 this week

Microsoft just announced this week's Xbox Live Arcade title and even though we aren't being treated to a twofer we do get the loveable blue hedghog Sonic. This Wednesday, September 12th Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be available for download off the XBLA for 400 Microsoft points. Even better than the 400 point pricetag is the fact that Sonic 2 will feature not only two player local co-op, but it will also include two player online co-op too. And you know how much we love our online co-op ... oh joy!

Sonic and Golden Axe speed to Xbox Live Arcade

This week's Xbox Live Arcade titles are Golden Axe and, finally, Sonic the Hedgehog. Both cost a mere 400 Microsoft Points, with Golden Axe allowing for co-operative play on Live and locally. The Achievements for both titles were made available yesterday, and led us to believe that at the very least, GA was coming today. Fortunately, we were only half right, as Sonic finally made its debut under the Sega Vintage Collection line of titles. With any luck, we'll see Ecco and Sonic 2 follow suit.

Sonic, Golden Axe achievements, GA this week?

We've got a double whammy of Xbox Live Arcade news today. First of all, the achievements for both Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe have been uncovered. This has in turn spurred the rumor that Microsoft will unveil Golden Axe as tomorrow's XBLA release. Some are comparing this to last year's surprise release of DOOM during X06. Golden Axe is definitely a classic title, but we were hoping for something a little more exciting, like, say, Marathon. At any rate, we at least have confirmation of one more Sega classic on XBLA. Take that for what it's worth.

Sonic 2 speeding to XBLA says ESRB

We sort of missed this yesterday, and it's time to make it right. In addition to the ESRB revelation that Lara Croft's latest adventure, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, is heading to the Xbox 360 (possibly as DLC), Joystiq also uncovered an ESRB entry for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Add this title to the ever growing list of Genesis classics rated by the ESRB -- Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage 2, Ecco the Dolphin, and now Sonic 2 -- and the existence of the SEGA Vintage Collection is becoming harder and harder to deny. Our only question: how many more titles does the ESRB need to reveal before SEGA makes an official announcement?

Ecco and Sonic receive ESRB ratings for XBLA

Further validating the screenshots of SEGA's Vintage Collection discovered earlier this month, ESRB ratings have been discovered for two of SEGA's classic titles. One of them, Sonic the Hedgehog, we've known about for some time. The other, however, is something of a surprise. Ecco the Dolphin is also listed for the Xbox 360. While we love the original Sonic as much as any self-respecting gamer, we have a special soft spot for Ecco. Given an HD makeover and the spiffy new age soundtrack from the SEGA CD version and we'd really have a special title on Xbox Live Arcade.

What other titles would you like to see in the SEGA Vintage Collection? Kid Chameleon, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star?

Finally, some Sonic & SEGA XBLA details

For the first time since its announcement back at The Last E3 Evar we finally have some new info regarding SEGA's involvement with Xbox Live Arcade, and the original Genesis/Mega Drive launch title, Sonic the Hedgehog. We were a little worried that Nintendo's Virtual Console scooped Microsoft, as the title's been available since the Wii's launch. SEGA's apparently going to be releasing their XBLA titles under the "SEGA Vintage Collection", with Sonic leading the pack. More screens available by clicking the "Read" link. So, is it about time, or does it really take AGES to be this good?

Sonic getting a much needed break

Speaking to N'Gai Croal about the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, SEGA of America president, Simon Jeffrey intimated that Sonic will soon be disappearing from the public eye for a while. Jeffrey notes that "we're not going to be bringing another [Sonic] game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again." While the recent Nintendo iterations of Sonic (Sonic Rush on DS and Sonic and the Secret Rings on Wii) have received decent reviews, his most recent outing on PS3 and 360 suffered from serious problems. Before that, the Sonic universe was subjected to the God-awful combination of hedgehogs and guns in Shadow the Hedgehog. To put it bluntly, the Sonic series has been faltering. Of course, that doesn't mean it hasn't been selling well, as Jeffrey points out.

Frankly, this can't be viewed as anything but a good thing. The quality of Sonic games has been slipping over the last few years and a "reset" sounds like exactly what Sonic needs. What would you like to see SEGA do with the next Sonic. We have only two words. No. Sidekicks.

Sonic Boss Attack mode on Marketplace

Sonic the Hedgehog
has a a few pieces of new content available on Xbox Live Marketplace. If you enjoyed the boss battles found in the game with, you might be interested in this. You can download, for 150 MS points each, "Boss Attack"s for each of the game's lead hedgehogs. Apparently, if you've completed Sonic, Shadow, or Silver's respective episode, you can use this content for what seems to be a game mode akin to Heavy Weapon's Boss Blitz, but for individual characters. Do you play the game, and would you pick this up if you do?

Sonic load times are slow ... very slow

We haven't touched the Xbox 360 game Sonic the Hedgehog, but we're kind of glad we didn't. Following Revolution posted a video of the game's load times during some mini mission where you help out one of your human friends. And look what we have, a loading screen literally every five seconds. Seriously, if this loading screen appeared that much in the game Sonic would be ejected and flung against the wall out of disgust. This has to be horrible coding especially when a game like Gears doesn't bring up a load screen once during the game. Do you know of any other 360 game that we should avoid due to extremely long load times? Video after the break.

Sonic demo is craptastic

If Sonic creator, Yuji Naka, knew that this is where SEGA wanted Sonic to go, it's no wonder he left the company. The Sonic demo, if you haven't played it yet, is bad. Really bad. Believe me, I am a Sonic fan. I write for 360 Fanboy it's true, but I am a SEGA fanboy at heart. Thus, it hurts me even more to tell you that the demo is just not very good. It's not unplayable, but parts of it are close. Read on for more.
