Production costs: PS3 and 360 Elite comparison

Digitimes threw together a comparison in the production of a 60GB Playstation 3 and an Xbox 360 Elite, using the "latest estimates by research firm iSuppli". Upon further investigation, a few of these numbers are a little ... fishy. Sure, we can see that the DVD Drive is significantly less expensive than a Blu-ray optical drive, but the 120 GB HDD being $11 cheaper for double the drive space? Would the Blu-ray drive ramp up the Assembly to more the six times the comparative cost as well? Finally, since when did the Elite retail for $399 USD?

Somebody made a couple "miscalculations" somewhere along the way, which in turn brings into question the validity of the PS3's production costs. Still, an interesting comparison, like how much the Wi-Fi connectivity costs to be built in for the PS3 compared to the $99 accessory for the 360. So what's your take on this, fanboys? Did they actually look at a Premium or is it all a bunch of bullspit anyway?

PSM readers, just give in and buy GoW

If you are a regular reader of Playstation Magazine ( ... ewww) you'll notice February's edition has a familiar game ad on the back. It looks like Microsoft bought some prime ad space on the back of the PSM magazine promoting none other than Gears of War. And why not? The PS3 fanboys need something to dream about and everyone knows they wish they could have Gears. We say just give in to your urges already guys, drop the PS3, and buy a Xbox 360 ... Gears is patiently waiting for you.

[Thanks, Jonah]

And now a word from Peter Moore

Kikizo sat down with Peter Moore for a big video interview where he spoke candidly about all things Microsoft, Xbox 360, handhelds (kind of), their competition and more. It's packed full of information, so go ahead and watch it to get the full effect.

Here's a little comment from him on the topic of widening the scope of games industry as a whole and what he believes the competition is doing for everyone: "I think Nintendo's doing their job, in broadening the look and feel of what games are about for the consumer. And, you know, Sony wants sell high definition movies."

Touché Mr. Moore.

Gates on PS3 controller: "not mainstream for most games"

The big man himself piped up about Sony's new controller, and he shares a mentality not uncommon to the rest of the gaming community (judging from the reaction of Tekken 6 using such features).

In an interview with MTV, he believes it isn't mainstream enough for most games saying, "It's tough because sometimes you move the controller, and you don't [mean] to fly into the ground. You just want to put the controller down... People aren't that good at totally standing still. Even pilots actually sit in a chair when they do their flying. So there's a lot to be learned about these controllers."

Apparently there is. Microsoft would know, considering that they tried it already with the Sidewinder Freestyle Pro which was flagrantly mediocre. Sony's got their work cut out for them with this one. It'll be interesting to see how it's integrated with all of the "mainstream" titles, if at all.

Peter Moore shares his thoughts on Sony

With the looming launch of the PS3, it's always fun to get a reaction from the front-liners on the other side. Peter Moore sat down with Eurogamer the other day and spilled his thoughts on Sony and their new controller.

"At Microsoft we did the same controller six years ago ... The gamers' response was muted at best," he said. He went on to speak about how the applications for such a controller were fairly narrow. And with the sacrifice of the force feedback, there's a strong argument that the PS3 controller will have lost much of its allure. Regardless, the gamers will be the ones who decide what works and what doesn't come November.

Mr. Moore's comment about the price point summed it up: "I can only imagine what's going on back home for 599 Euros for what looks to me like a platform that's on a par at best with some of the software we're showing."

No price change coming soon, says Microsoft

Not that the current prices are that bad, but seeing the cost of the 360 drop even more could potentially solidify the rest of the market for Microsoft come November.

That's what a lot of people have been saying, at least. But Chris Lewis from Microsoft has said that such a drop won't take place. "We have no plans to make any price adjustment. ... we have a great value proposition." No argument there. Cheap gamers may have been holding out for a price cut, but anyone who really wanted a 360 would have already invested by now. If you're one of those thrifty people though, you may as well go ahead and bite the bullet because it doesn't look like Microsoft will be offering the console for any cheaper than it already is any time soon.

Recap: Sony developer slams PS3, praises 360

Back in November, a Sony developer named Josh Robinson, who claims to have had hands on experience with one of five PlayStation 3 dev kits available in the United States, wrote an op-ed on Downinfront.tv citing his disappointment in the PS3 and his take on the 360. He lamented, "I started of VERY excited about the PS3. I was very confident that it was going to just destroy the XBOX 360 just on the name SONY alone. The more time that goes by the more I am becoming doubtful. Everything I’ve developed or seen developed has yet to be 'next gen.'"

The post has made its way around the net a bit since then and Joystiq picked up the story two days ago. In the last two days, the original post has been removed and the corresponding forum had been closed stating, "We removed the post for a reason. I can't go into it any more until I talk with the other members of DIF. When we clear things up, we'll post it again. =)"

After looking into it a bit more, the story appears authentic. Josh Robinson works for Sony, maintains a personal webpage here, and has a member page at Downinfront here. He also posted several responses to the Joystiq post, before the Joystiq trolls proved insurmountable. What does this mean?

Well, not much probably. Could one developer have had a bad experience with early PS3 dev kits? Sure. I personally don't expect the PS3's graphics to look any different than the 360's, but this might help temper some of the Sony hype a bit. The main point is that progress on the system is slow. Dev kits are finally getting out to developers in decent numbers, while Sony meanwhile ignored CES entirely, letting Microsoft walk away with the lion's share of press.

In the meantime, enjoy the op-ed, courtesy of Google's cache.
