Street Fighter IV: the reason for 3D

1UP continues its coverage of Street Fighter IV with a new video interview detailing the reasoning behind the development choices made for the game, most notably the decision to use three-dimensional characters and backgrounds while retaining two-dimensional gameplay. Producer Yoshinori Ono asserts that the core of SFIV's design philosophy is to retain the feel of a classic Street Fighter title while bringing the characters into the third dimension. When asked why Capcom chose to go with 3D characters rather than pursuing a high resolution 2D style akin to the Guilty Gear series, Ono says that Capcom is known for pushing technology, stating that the company really did the most it could with 2D animation in Street Fighter III and that 3D allows for new possibilities. Using 3D for character models allows Capcom to implement transparent skin layers, for example, giving the characters detailed veins and musculature. Player damage will also be visible in character models. The characters can also interact with the backgrounds, though so far it sounds like these interactions are purely aesthetic -- hanging cloth being blown by a passing fireball, for example.

It all sounds fine and dandy, but the proof will ultimately lie in how well the game plays. Find the entire interview -- all thirteen minutes of it -- embedded after the break.

I did, and it's why I don't like what this game's probably going to turn out to be. SF3 had some of the best 2D animation EVER (even better than Guilty Gear).

This is like the worst looking Tekken game or the worst looking Budokai game EVER. Why can't they just be like "Psych! Buy SF2 HD Remix SUCKAZ!" That would probably offend WAY fewer SF fans than making Ryu look like a really creepy Akira from VF.

First of all, while sf3 3rd strike had amazing animation it it was severly out done by Guilty Gear XX2 reload on the xbox original. But it was king for awhile. Still is the deepest and best 2d fighting game in my opinion.
Secondly, Capcom lost all thier good 2d programmers after sf3 was made. Which is why they havn't made a fourth in all this time and also why every one of the 20 or so other capcom 2d fighters that have come out look like they are nowhere near the level of design that sf3 was at.
They all went, made a pit stop at SNK then ended up making guess what? The guilty gear series.
There are NO CAPCOM fighters that even come close to looking as good as these titles...

Vampire Savior
Jo Jo'S Bizzar Adventure
Street Fighter 3

They all came out around the same time too. Since then capcoms fighters have played well but wernt up to par with any of these games, not even close. With one exception and thats Cap Vs Snk 2 but still, even though a great game lacks in animation and frame rate. Thats why these guys dont wanna touch 2d, they cant handle it the way they know it should be handled. These 3d models they are using in this game look about as good if not worse than the character models in one of the newer MK games. But it WILL play like sf3 with some added features.
Oh and just so everyone knows, the game the good ol sf programmers helped out snk with was Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves. Which is another masterfuly done 2d fighter and manages to put everyother snk fighter ever made to shame in terms of animation quality.
