360 demand catches up with Wii

Compete is reporting that during the month of August demand for the Xbox 360 caught up with demand for Nintendo's wunderkind, the Wii. Now, before you all start shouting that the Wii handily outsold the Xbox 360 in August, let's define the word "demand." According to Compete, which analyzes internet traffic patterns, demand is equivalent to "people shopping consoles at SKU level pages." From what we can tell, that means the number of people that could conceivably press "Add to Cart" and find themselves the happy owner of a new console. According to Compete, the Wii saw a decline in demand during the month of August, whereas the Xbox 360 saw a marked increase. These two changes caused the demand for both consoles to rest at just under 600,000 shoppers each. Of course, what's interesting isn't so much that the demand is equal, but that demand for the 360 is rising. Whether or not this represents a longterm trend, we'll have to wait and see. Then again, given the impending release of Halo 3, we're willing to bet that the 360 demand will increase again in September.

2. I just want to see 360 numbers in september, wonder it it could out sell the wii because of halo 3.

3. I'm really not that surprised, I have 2 xbox 360s and a Wii and I must say that I'm more excited about the upcoming games for the Xbox 360 rather than the Wii (ie. Holiday lineup). Been playing so much COD4 MW Beta that I haven't even touched my Wii. Also, I notice alot more people coming in to ask if we have 360s in stock rather than the Wii. Strange....both are great systems though in their own way, don't get me wrong. This holiday season will be one of the bests for next-gen console owners, that's a given.

4. this makes a lot of sense. the 360 continues to have awesome releases. plus Live connectivity. plus multiplayer dynamics. Gears then, Bioshock now... XBLA....

but i didn't touch my Wii for the six months (or whatever) between Zelda and Metroid. SIX MONTHS! ouch...

6. Well we know that the 360 will have a increase in demand in Augest because of Bioshock and Halo 3. But I bet by Nov. We will see an increase in demand for the Wii because of Super Smash Bros Melee and Mario Galaxies.

7. Halo 3 will move consoles like crazy this september and definitely through the holiday season. Halo 3 is going to be insane!

8. Don't expect a significant increase in Wii sales for smash bros. most hardcore nintendo fans, as i once considered myself, will have already purchased the wii because they knew the first party games would come. i bought the wii and zelda at launch. since then i have sold zelda and bought nothing else. nintendo has let down their core audience and i wont be suprised if it shows when these first party games release

11. It was bound to happen with Halo 3 on the coming out so soon.

12. @ oggmonster: You mean smash bros. brawl, right?

@ Stubby: How are nintendo's first party games going to let down their hardcore fans? Their first party games are always the defintion of perfection (usually why they get delayed so many times).
Meh. Whichever. I just really want me some Galaxy and Brawl.

13. i'm already sick of halo 3. sure i want to play it but NO game could be good enough to be all over the fricken place. i mean it's every where. i dont think there was this much hype for star wars movies. they are good games dont get me wrong but they are pretty short, and a normal guy that doesnt sit in front of his tv with a bag of chips and some halo3 mountain dew all day like me, dont get into multiplayer all that much(ok maybe there are some) but it seems everytime i try i get killed because of all the nerds with calys on there thumbs(only place they have them)know every nuck and cranny and can just sit there a pop people off. it gets old. as for me all this publicity is only making me want to play it less. very good game but not the greatness you guys make it out to be. done with my rant, you guys can continue on with your pale vampire looking, excellent video game playing, virgin lives.

14. With the trendy Galo 3 on the horizon I can see the demand for 360s going waaaayy up, maybe even past the Wii.

Going 6 months in between Zelda and Metroid without playing your Wii mean you missed out on some pretty decent games. Ofcourse I went that long without touching my 360 but thats becuase I'm getting tired of generic sci-fi shooters.

I would definatly start playing my 360 more but I'm getting the red ring of death AGAIN.

15. The comments here are so helpful.

So far I've been told I'm a pale vampire look alike virgin (although why this guy is taking an interest in my sex life, when he claims to have better things to do than sit around and play halo is beyond me.) I've also learnt the 360 has more than one sci-fi shooter. But not just any, GENERIC ONES!

Well, I'm sure glad these comments are filled with helpful intelligent replies and not morons spewing shit.

Oh, go 360, yeah, that too.

16. I've been waiting for Halo 3 before getting my 306 :D

Posted at 5:31AM on Sep 21st 2007 by Joff

17. This trend will only continue. After Halo 3 October will bring us:
1. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
2. FIFA 2008
3. PGR 4
4. Blacksite
5. Clive Barker's Jericho

Then in November:
1. Army of Two
2. Assassin's Creed
3. Call Of Duty 4
4. Burnout Paradise
5. Half Life 2: Orange Box
6. Timeshift
7. Mass Effect

That's potentially 12 great games and a hell of a lot of money to be spent! Aaaagghh ;]

18. well i am driving down to Buffalo next month and now that the canadian dollar is just a tiny higher than the american i will buy some xbox games and maybe the 120hd, i hate that everything in canada is more expensive than down there, the 120 hd in canada is 229 and games are usually 79 to 89 i paid off my halo 3 and it came to over 91 bucks with tax, the collectors mind you but still

19. Hey, I'm a basement-dwelling pasty virgin vampire, and I take offense to your statement sir.

But you're right. Halo3 is overhyped. Graphics aren't that impressive. It's a sad rehash of Halo2 which wasn't as fun as the original Halo. Any game with this kind of marketing blitz just can't be that great, and from what the COD4 beta testers are saying, COD4 is better.

20. Wii blows so much ass its ridiculous. Anyone who enjoys swatting a ball back in forth for more than 10 minutes has fallen victim to the gimmick that is Wii. Aside from Zelda and Metroid it has ZERO games! I have only played about 10 minutes of Metroid because Bioshock is so much better which saddens me because Metroid is my favorite game franchise. I just pray that Wii starts its downfall before game makers believe that the population would rather play shallow gimmicky remakes of pong instead of incredible games like Bioshock, Oblivion, and Halo.

BRING IT ON FLAMEJOBS!!!
