Analysts: 360 sales going up, will outsell PS3 through holidays

Oh, analysts. Always predicting such crazy things. Who doesn't love 'em? Why, just recently they predicted that the PS3 would outsell the Xbox 360 in July. Now that the July NPD numbers are out, we know that turned out not to be true, but that doesn't mean we aren't frothing at the mouth to hear the next prediction. Having seen that the 360 still managed to outsell Sony's wonder machine, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter expressed his surprise to Gamasutra, noting that "Xbox 360 demand was far stronger than we expected this month." He further noted that he had expected sales to decline on news of the Xbox 360's apparent reliability problems and the PS3 price reduction. Seeing that such wasn't the case, Pachter predicts that Xbox sales will increase, as "the warranty issue appears to be of little concern to consumers, and the recent price cut should stimulate demand." The fantasy game exchange market simExchange agreed with Pachter's predictions, and further noted that they expect the Xbox 360 to outsell the PS3 "every month through the holidays." The group based this prediction on their own predicted lifetime sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

5. Oh crap. Could you analysts just keep predicting doom and gloom for the 360? It scares me when we're in your good graces. Now I'm expecting bigger PS3 sales. Thanks alot, friggin analysts...

6. I own Both PS3 and 360 and tbh i think its gonna be a long time before people can say wich will win. thats IF! one does win. Must remeber there was no clear winner over SNES and Megadrive(or genesis as some of you know it) If one does come out on top i wouldnt expect it to be soon.

Thats just my opinion though

7. Was anyone predicting that the PS3 would do better sales than the 360 this holiday season? Does it really take an "analyst" to surmise as much?

Although, as a 360 owner, I also feel overwhelmed this holiday season -- too much good stuff. Odd huh, while our PS3 brethern dig in the ashes, begging for more games... Yes, yes, I am aware Heavenly Sowrd is coming out, and that other game. Reviews aren't what they should be though.

8. Thanks for telling us what we're already all predicting.

Mass Effect + Bioshock + Halo 3 + Price Cut + best version of Madden '08

I mean really. Although it's kind of scary that Patcher is for the 360 because he's usually wrong and that's not good.

The Wii will sell great because it's so casual.

10. Who cares!!! Why are people just freakin fanboys? I'm a gamer and I love playin good games no matter what system they are on. I own all the new systems and I enjoy them all. Just game and stop making these consoles into a gang fight.

11. As I've been posting everywhere in the past week...the 360 will gain a HUGE advantage over the PS3 this holiday season. And I FULLY expected it to outsell the PS3 in july...

Xbox 360 FTW! THERE AIN'T NO BETTA!

13. I don't care who wins or loses, this makes things more interesting and keeps both companies (sony and ms) on their toes trying to please the consumers. keep it going!

15. I'm hardly anti-Microsoft, but, if you're cheering for 360 dominance, consider what Microsoft was willing to do when it was in 2nd place: it put a product with a high failure rate on the market and didn't acknowledge that fact until recently with an extended warranty that really does not address the real issue--quality assurance.

So, imagine what little attention to quality a dominant Xbox team will have, when it sees gamers continue to purchase a product of extremely dubious quality.

I would have bought a 360 several months ago if it hadn't been a quality issue. I've seen my brother replace his (well ventilated) 360 three times in less than a year. We're talking FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer quality here.

16. of course the 360 will outsell the ps3, its common sense.
the only reason the wii is doing so well is the low price tag.

it is not a next gen machine! c'mon

no hd media and a lousy online service that provides the 100th version of mario 64!

are ppl not sick of the same old nintendo shit?

17. i have to hand it to MS with the one year release then the GoW release during the holidays they for saw the PS3 drought and no need to launch great games all year only to land halo3, bio shock, and Mass Effect, GTAIV just mysteriously disappearing after $50 million dollars for exclusive content mean while sonys golden child KZ2 is only $20 million, and landing all of them squarely between the PS3 launching there key exclusives that will spur sales until the real games we want come out. touche MS touche! you have proven yourself to be a marketing juggernaut in what ever you do. while providing faulty systems obviously red flagged by a 3 year warrenty your truly a force to be reckoned with. well damn i bought a one. plus when those new chips and heat sink come out im gonna by another one like many others, sh*t damn you MS!!!

18. Some things to consider:

Why are different analysts reporting that PS3 outsold 360 in July and others are reporting the opposite?

Are repeat buyers being considered? If a console dies and an individual is unable to claim warranty, the repeat buyer is not a new system in the market, but rather a repeat owner. This would be similar to mmorpg's claiming they have 2 million subscribers, when really they only may have 1 million individual users with multiple characters.

It just seems like we never get all the details from either camp.

20. "Why are different analysts reporting that PS3 outsold 360 in July and others are reporting the opposite?"

I haven't seen anyone say that the PS3 outsold the 360.

Pachter predicted that would be the case, but he was wrong, and admitted it.
