We are all aboutTeam Fortress 2 here at X3F. While we certainly look forward to the classic gameplay, there can be no doubt that its luscious visual style is a big draw. The above video from Gamersyde shows off just how much work goes into all the environments and characters of Team Fortress 2. The team at Valve drew their inspiration from commercial drawings of the early 20th century. Hell, they even mention the work of Hayao Miyazaki as an influence. One of the overall goals of the design process was to make every character unique and easy to identify at a distance. With this in mind, the team set about creating unique color schemes and silhouettes for each character. There are also lots of technical elements discussed in the video. We're not really sure what a Phong highlight is, but if it makes Team Fortress 2 this pretty, we really don't care.
They took common sense gaming and artistic properties and wrapped them up to seem like they are profound geniuses. And sure, they are utilizing the latest in lighting tech on their models and shit. Perhaps they would like a cookie?
Anyone interested in the definition of pretentious, watch the above video.
WOW WOW WOW..You have to appreciate the creative direction these guys went into with this game. I think iam also more interested in this game then HALO. we all know what HALO is gonna gring, but this game i think could change the gaming industry.. These characters looks very lifelike the way they walk and interact. yes there cartoonish or claylike but i would love to see more games use this style.. Change of pace from the normal alien/fantasy FPS/RPG.
Pretentious? Surely RUSKULL is the only one that thinks this comes across as pretentious. It amazes me that anyone could feel that way after watching this.
I found the video pretentious as well. For all most of us know the lighting stuff at the end was just babble. The character design portion at the beginning was a load of crap. Gullible is written on the ceiling. Still, I really can't wait for this game to come out.
Phong lighting (I believe) is to do with the effect on a model through all different kinds of light (diffuse, specular, and ambient). Basically what theyre saying is that the character models are given realistic light reflections from all angles, the same kind of effects used in CGI animation movies. Although now I think about it why they have to be so technical about it all is beyond me; meh what do I know, maybe Valve are just being pretentious
Perhaps they were being so technical because the video was shown at a computer graphics conference. A place full of technical people. Not sure how people thought they were being pretentious.

I think I might be more excited about Team Fortress 2 than I am Halo 3 multiplayer. More because I never played Team Fortress.
