Shadowrun lacking campaign and split screen [update 1]

Over on the official Shadowrun online forums a question was posed to whether or not you could play local multiplayer split screen online or offline after hearing a rumor that there wouldn't be the option. In came Kimona, lead program manager of FASA Studios, to confirm that there indeed would be no local (LAN style) multiplayer or split screen for that matter. According to Kimona, the reasoning behind the choice was to "focus on making what we have even more polished and clean". And with information we learned earlier we now know that Shadowrun will not have any campaign mode or local multiplayer split screen as it is strictly an online multiplayer game. So Shadowrun enthusiasts, we think that not including split screen kinda sucks, but what's your opinion on the way things are shaping up?

Update 1: We've made a mistake guys and read the forum's question wrong. What Kimona was talking about was having no online or offline split screen and says nothing about system link or local multiplayer. So, there will be system link goodness, but simply no split screen ... sorry for the confusion.

21. Well, it had better be half price then, since it's only half a game.

22. Well, there goes the sale for me.

4 Xboxes, 4 copies of halo 1 and Halo 2 were sold to myself. Not to mention controllers.

I own 4 360s, and will own 4 copies of Halo 3 for that reason alone.

Now if someone else will get a clue, LAN parties are still a huge deal for me and my friends. Talking smack to a stranger online is not much fun; being able to congregate in a real life room after a match to talk about it with your friends is, in my opinion, multiplayer fun on a level that few people get to experience.

So there goes 4 potential copies of Shadowrun sold to me....too bad I WAS actually excited about the game.

Oh no wait, I need to call my 15 other friends who all own 360s and 15 copies of the game, who all have xbox live gold accounts with broadband internet, to meet in the lobby I create at a certain time, and make sure to have your headsets on and unmuted..........

Yeah. Bottom line - Shadowrun doesn't care about gamers. It's now a rush job that has cut corners. I'm glad I'm not a game reviewer, or I'd tear some of these companies a new one for releasing a half-baked product.
Either get in it for the long haul, and release a quality product, with options for different types of gamers, or just don't make the damn game at all.

Good job. Make a multiplayer only game, and give the world ONE OPTION on how to play it with multiple people. It's developers like you that makes Xbox Live look bad.

23. No System link is VERY VERY bad...

I just hope they make available stand-alone servers as normal PC games do, if they don't, there's no reason to buy the 360 or the PC version (even if there's already less reasons after no System Link/LAN multiplayer).

24. pseudo99-

you make it sound like logging in to xbox live and un-muting your mic is hard to do. i understand perfectly what you are saying about LAN play, but like you said, you and 15 other people still have xbox live. i think we should all just give the game a chance first.

25. Personally, no single player, no purchase.

Posted at 8:05AM on Mar 6th 2007 by Jojo

26. System link is the lamest thing ever and developing for it would have been a total waste of resources. It was a weak attempt to give console gamers some non-split screen multiplay before they knew what online gaming really was.

Not many people are going to throw their 40+" tv's in the trunk to go lan it up at someones house. We have this thing called the internet, maybe you've heard of it. It makes it easy to do all sorts of things online, even play games!

27. who cares if it has a single player, the game obviously is about multiplayer and any single player mode would be half baked. quit crying you bunch of babies. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Posted at 8:22AM on Mar 6th 2007 by boog

28. That is what this is. That is all it was supposed to be, and if done well all it needs to be. So relax. Half the people playing Halo2 or GRAW you talk to will say they never finished the campaign, or even bothered.

Posted at 8:54AM on Mar 6th 2007 by Assbestos

29. This is total BS. As a fan of Shadowrun the pen and paper RPG and the wonderful SNES game, I'm deeply disappointed with how this wonderful IP is playing out. Microsoft is just shipping a stripped down FPS that merely has a Shadowrun "skin" Count me out!

30. T ghost... you also realize games are WAAAY older than home game consoles and modern controllers too right?

I'm not gonna argue you on the differences between PC and Home game consoles, because they are as different as night and day and it would be like arguing the points of a sports car next to an SUV or something, both are good at different things and used for different purposes.

One is probably the backbone of society in a sense, the other, well, is an entertainment device. (nevermind the fact that consoles are becoming more and more set top boxes like PCs these days)
I mean if you look at a console these days, its nothing more than a dedicated PC really. So to say PCs never evolutionized gaming is basically saying consoles never will either.

Also as for the shadowrun, i'm pretty sure they can optimize it for the 360 AS well as coding it to run a variety of PC systems. I mean if they could do it for the other PC ports on the system... dont see why they couldnt do it with this one.

31. It just means it will be like Battlefield 2 (or a UT game) which the SP sucked and I only played the online MP which was a blast so cool. As long as it is fun and priced accordingly, then no big deal. Bring it on.

Posted at 10:22AM on Mar 6th 2007 by RangerPrimeX

32. First off, T Ghost you have no Idea what the heck you are talking about. I mean I can't even really counter what the heck you stated on the sheer fact that it makes no sense what so ever.

Second, its not half a game. The only way if would be half a game is if they started working on a campaign mode and decided not to finish it. Then it would be somewhat half a game. But this game is just like the Unreal series, it's meant to to be a multi-player experience.

I will say this though, these gaming companies need to start producing more local enabled MP games because it is so annoying when my friends come over and they can't even play with me because my game only supports online play. That's not going to help any company move units if they don't consider something as simply as being able to play in the same room on the same system.

33. I think the game is great and what I am playing doesn't even have all the races in yet. I think that it will attract the same people who play Halo 2 online (Until Halo 3 comes out). I also have a feeling that it might be at a value price also.

Posted at 10:40AM on Mar 6th 2007 by jedi55555

34. I love a good multiplayer session as much as the next guy but sometimes you just want to chill in single player. I get sick of the whining retards who think online gaming means something in real life (probably making up for their tiny penis) with the yelling and BS. So I guess I'm saying no campaign or single player means no purchase from me. Everyone I know feels the same so I predict this game isn't going to do very well... And they've had a ton of time to work on it, other companies can do both single and multi why can't they?

35. T Ghost your the laugh of the year. Please spare us your retarded comments.

Posted at 3:38PM on Mar 6th 2007 by Phocas

36. It seems like within the last year or so more games have been embracing casual players and co-op/multiplayer, but more games seem to be straying from split-screen. I think many players, especially hardcore gamers with casual-gamer friends prefer local split-screen, simply because its more fun to play games with your friends right there then with a bunch of strangers online, by yourself in a room.

What about releasing multiplayer as downloadable content for 10$ or so after the game releases? While paying for multiplayer isnt ideal, it is better to have a great, polished one player game, and then later a great multiplayer, then no multiplayer at all.
