Ten 360 games make Famitsu's top 25 of '07

Videogaming247 wrangled up all of super cool Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu's reviews from last year and compiled a list of the top twenty-five games of 2007 based on review scores. And, wouldn't you know, it appears that the Xbox 360 took home ten of the twenty-five spots. ZOMG!

360 games that made top twenty-five honors range from the Halo 3s and the Call of Duty 4s of the world to games like Lost Odyssey and Oblivion. Now, we're completely aware that we don't have to tell you how grand games on this top twenty-five list are, because we all know how freakin' amazing the 360's game catalog is. But for a highly respected Japanese gaming mag to give ten of the twenty-five top 2007 games honors to 360 titles ... well, that's newsworthy. Simply put, Japan's video game culture still doesn't embrace the Xbox brand, which makes Famitsu's rankings all the more intriguing. We already know one magazine's game rankings cannot change the anti-Xbox mindset Japan refuses to let go of, but we also know it doesn't hurt. It's a crying shame they're missing out on all the greatness that is the 360 ... oh well, their loss. Complete top twenty-five list posted after the break.

Famitsu reveals new female Soul Calibur IV fighter

Our Famitsu friends just revealed a brand new character that'll making a debut in the upcoming Star Wars infused Soul Calibur IV and she (yes she) is feisty looking one.

Her name is Scheherazade (pronunciation anyone?), she sports a saber-like weapon and comes across as a scantily clad swordswoman who loves the color pink and frilly outfits. That said, we're sure she could beat us down any day. No other Scheherazade details could be lifted from Famitsu's foreign pages, but we expect good old Namco to come to our informative-rescue and announce the entire Soul Calibur IV character list before launch. Until then, we'll try our darnedest to envision Yoda and Scheherazade going head to head in a battle to the death. Odd ...

Tales of Vesperia scans from Famitsu

The upcoming, Xbox 360 exclusive, Tales of Vesperia has had a standard position in Japan's popular gaming publication Famitsu since it was first announced. Gamersyde offered up scans of this week's issue that details the beautiful visuals of the next step in the popular role-playing game franchise. As we reported last month, Tales of Vesperia is currently slated for release exclusively on the Xbox 360 but could eventually see life on the PlayStation 3. The game is set for release in 2009 in both 2008 in Japan and is rumored to hit sometime in 2009 Stateside, details of a European release have yet to be released but gamers should expect a release sometime in 2009 as well.

Update: Namco Bandai is confirming the title is scheduled for a 2008 release in Japan.

Famitsu gives Halo 3 high marks

And so the Halo 3 game reviews begin to trickle in ... well, at least from Japan. The extremely popular and oh so "it" Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has successfully completed Bungie's masterpiece, contemplated their experience, weighed the good and the bad and published their review. Famitsu gave Halo 3 a 10, 9, 9, 9, which friends, is a pretty darn good review especially from the FPS hating land of Japan.

We also heard that any Halo 3 reviews coming out of the US or Europe are embargoed and cannot be published until this Sunday, so we'll just have to wait a few days and see what our fellow reviewers think of the game. But with Famitsu giving the game such high praise we aren't the least bit worried about Halo 3 being a dud. Wait, what are we saying! Who in their right mind ever would think Halo 3 was going to be a dud or anything less than spectaculicious, Bungie just doesn't roll like that. We apologize for even mentioning the word "dud" and "Halo 3" in the same sentence, let alone the same blog post. Eesh, we feel dirty. Time to go cleanse ourselves of these impure thoughts.

Blue Dragon scans, new info

We found these Famitsu scans of Blue Dragon over at French gaming site, Xboxygen. The scans reveal profiles of each character's shadow. For those that don't know, the premise behind Blue Dragon is that each character has a living shadow that is used in combat. The main character's shadow just happens to be a dragon, hence, Blue Dragon. Clever, huh? Anyway, our Japanese is rusty, but we think the shadows are named thus:

Giant bird - "Phoenix"
Giant bat - "Killa/Killer Bat"
Giant tiger - "Saber Tiger"
Dragon - "Dragon" (Boy, that one is creative)
Minotaur - "Minotauros"

We're not sure what the other scans are about. Anybody care to translate, or just give us a general idea?

Famitsu head says 360 is dead in Japan

Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher, Enterbrain, isn't making any bets on 360 winning in Japan. His reasoning: thus far the 360 has sold a paltry 150,000 consoles in Japan. He does concede that Blue Dragon -- Microsoft's would be white knight -- might add another 100,000 by the end of 2006, but that's about it. He goes on to guess that by the end of 2007, the number will only inflate to 560,000 units. Definitely not good. Granted, Hammamura-san is no analyst -- and analysts are always right -- but he does publish Japan's biggest gaming magazine after all. Is his prognosis right? Is Japan a hopeless cause for Microsoft? In the end, does it really even matter?

What do you think?

360 title in Famitsu's most wanted. Wha??

Several sites have been posting Famitsu's latest most wanted list. But wait! What's this? An Xbox 360 exclusive, Blue Dragon -- the RPG being developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker studio -- is number 8. A prestigious spot indeed for a 360 title. Even more impressive, Blue Dragon tops the Japanese favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is just the sort of thing that Microsoft's new Japanese PR blog should be pimping, and pimping hard.

Be warned, the read link points to a Nintendo fan site. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with the 360 at all. So, just prepare yourselves for that.

PSU Famitsu scans get!

Xboxyde has posted some new scans of Phantasy Star Universe from the latest Famitsu. The scans feature some of the new monsters as well as the new "Partner Machinery" which will replace the MAG system from previous installments. Also featured are some of the new vehicles, including a mountable and adorable chocobo dinosaur. Unfortunately, as Famitsu insists on publishing all of its articles in Japanese, I can't read any of it.

Anybody who knows more kanji than me, feel free to translate.
