As some of us pour one out for our fallen countrymen of Portugal, Croatia, Netherlands and Italy, we take solace in the fact that digital soccer football will return to Europe this Autumn. Konami today announced that its popular football franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer, will release its 2009 edition later this year for European consumers. Known for its realism and hardcore gamplay, PES 2009 attempts to capture videophiles with a newly revamped graphics engine and standard pitch-perfect (see what we did there?) animation. While PES 2008 was riddled with wacky bugs, the 2009 season promises to bring the series back to its roots of being the football game to beat. No release dates for other regions have been determined. If it's half as good as they claim it to be, all we can say is hurry!

I'll be passing this one this year. 2008 and PES6 had game breaking bugs that were never fixed, I've lost faith with the series. We need someone like Rockstar to wade in on the action and do it properly, especially since EA only make half a game too.

I'm sure they wheel out that same line every year. Konami's last two games have been lousy - bug ridden, unrealistic, and impossible to play online - and nothing in these screenshots suggests a radical departure from that.
The only in-game shot - http://news.bigdownload.com/gallery/pes-2009/877245/ - looks unpromising. Why is the linesman standing still? Why are there two pairs of Argentinean players marking each other?
The other screenshots are obviously heavily edited. Even that can't disguise the balloon-like shorts and sleeves, and static hair and grass.
What the hell does Seabass and his team do all year..?
