Remember Microsoft's grand
announcement that IPTV would be available to Xbox 360 owners sometime in 2007 and all the excitement that followed? Yeah, us either, but our European friends may be getting one step closer to the promised IPTV function with the latest rumor hitting the web. Word on the street is that British Telecom may have cut a deal with Microsoft to exclusively offer IPTV to its subscribers through the Xbox 360 sometime this year. And it isn't all that far fetched seeing that BT is the largest and only telecom provider in the area and has already partnered with Microsoft using their Microsoft Mediaroom software. We'll just have to be patient and wait to see if the IPTV talk starts up again, because the topic has been hidden in the shadows for quite the long time. Wereez R IPTV doodz?

I hope there's a Belgian provider that wants to make a similar deal with Microsoft.

The AT&T Uverse Package uses Microsoft Mediaroom services. They're wiring our neighborhood up for it right now.
One of my co-workers already has it and has nothing but good things to say about it.
The rumor about BT sounds like it might pan out. Right now on Topcoder, Microsoft and BT is hosting development competitions using the Connected Services Framework. And I saw something in there about telecom billing.
But Microsoft's already rolling out IPTV/Mediaroom based services in specific US market. I'm just hoping that down the road, they'll let us use the Xbox in conjunction with it...That would rock.

I bet this becomes the European yin to the US' yang..whereby I mean I bet we don't get IPTV in the States, but Europe does, because they don't exactly have XBL Video Marketplace.

BT!!!! I'd love to see which one will get priority over bandwidth, the 360 or their own BTVision.
Slow network, timeouts, bandwidth throttling, non-english speaking technical support.
I can't wait!

yay iptv is on its way but if this rumour is true microsoft will have shot themselves in the foot, BT cant match up to Virgin Media for broadband and alot of people will refuse to change provider just for it

i dont even know what iptv is and i really dont care.
Getting bored of game systems trying to branch out too far into media systems.
I've got a hifi for my music (or just my pc)
I've got a tv/dvd player for movies
I've got the internet for downloadable video's.
Lets concentrate on game development for consoles please?
Despite that though...BT exclusivity on anything would be a bad idea. BT is one of the least popular broadband providers and at this moment in time, the tv/internet/phone package of a gamer, is usually dictated by the quality of the internet.

This probably means IPTV in the US will be done with specific providers instead of allowing you to use whatver IPTV service you want. I think thats unfortunate and makes IPTV less desirable to me, but maybe Im wrong and this will work better than I hope/expect?

Most people will no use iptv because it requires you to use a fiber optic connection. It is the next step to get to the internet. Faster than broadband.Much faster. 60-100mbs

Oh you'll want to switch, because instead of 16000 feet of copper to a CO, you're running 500 feet of copper to a Fiber Switch. It's practically Fiber to the Home.

Just some constructive critiquing, so do not take this the wrong way, but reading over a lot of the comments surrounding IPTV (not just here, but just about everywhere), it is more than apparent that everyone needs to Google search the term and get a better idea of how IPTV functions and everyone currently involved globally in various IPTV initiatives, including that at least 20 partners that Microsoft currently has licensing their IPTV protocol.
It doesn't hurt to do a little research if you have questions, is all I am saying. Most people seem to have the complete incorrect idea and assumptions as to how all this works. And a little homework on everyone's part, would make for a much more intelligible discourse on the subject.

In theory it will be the same content as offered by the BT V box, but no longer dependent on the user having a BTHomeHub connected to BT Total Broadband.

Firstly BT is providing the content and infrastructure(they have already implemented it for their own IPTV service) and almost certainly will not require you to have BT Broadband. Although BT is Microsofts recommended provider for Live. They do deals throught xbox.co.uk to get a free wifi adapter when you sign up for BT Broadband.
Secondly BT Broadband is brilliant. I have never had a problem with it or its equipment. Orange/Wannadoo/Freeserve on the other hand were terribly unreliable. Tiscalli I have also heard very bad things about. And we all know that Virgin is going Belly-up.

They have been cross promoting the BT Total Broadband package now for sometime. Ironicly the router used it the no.1 cause for people not being able to connect to game lobbies in LIVE.
I intending on leaving BT once my contract is up. The service is poor and the customer service even worse. This would not make me stay with them.
