Xbox 360 Facts 'n Stats are statilicious

Breaking news! This just in! The Xbox 360 is a success! As part of their press release blitzkrieg, Microsoft decided to supply us with some Facts 'n Stats ammunition to prove how awesome the Xbox 360 and its community really is. So, we're passing along the news.

Supplied in their Facts 'n Stats are little statistical gems post-marketing spun for easy digestion. Little gems like 18 million Xbox 360 games have been sold worldwide, which is twice as many sold as both competitors combined. And another stating that Xbox Live has garnered 7 million members and that in the last year a new member has joined Xbox Live every 8 seconds. Or how about one of our favorites that since November, sixteen third party Xbox 360 titles have broken into the top ten best selling games (NPD figures) while third party titles on the PS3 or Wii have yet to achieve any top ten status. Fun, isn't it? More Facts 'n Stats enjoyment can be had after the break.

Leadership
- More than 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles have sold across the 37 countries where it is currently available. Xbox LIVE is currently available in 25 countries across the globe.
- According to NPD in the U.S., since our competitors launched in November, consumers have spent $2.4 billion on Xbox 360 consoles, games and accessories at retail; nearly as much as both of our competitors combined.
- Since our competitors launched we've sold more than 18 million games. That's more than both the Wii and PS3 combined, according to NPD.
- Faster than expected, Xbox LIVE has eclipsed the 7 million member milestone and is on track to reach 10 million members by the end of June 2008 making it larger than the largest city in the U.S. In fact, in the last year we've added a new Xbox LIVE member every 8 seconds.

Gaming
- There are more than 250 games available today on Xbox 360, including 71 Xbox LIVE Arcade games.
- Xbox 360 is the next-gen console with the largest games attach rate at an astounding 5.9 games sold per Xbox 360 owner.
- Since November, 65 percent of all next-generation third-party console games sold were Xbox 360 games,
- According to NPD data, since November, Xbox 360 3rd party titles have cracked the top ten overall best selling games list 16 times. Over the same period, not a single third party title for the Wii or the PS3 made the top ten overall list.
- Xbox LIVE members have spent more than 2.9 billion hours playing games on Xbox LIVE with their friends around the world. That is equal to 121 million days or more than 332,000 years of gaming.
- To date, Xbox 360 owners have unlocked more than 466 million Achievements. All of those unlocked Achievements have created a total combined Gamerscore of more than 11 billion.
- There have been 2 billion game sessions hosted since the launch of Xbox 360, with more than 4.3 million hosted each day.
- More than 45 million Xbox LIVE Arcade games have been downloaded since launch; everything from the arcade games of our youth to the best in new, original titles.
- Xbox LIVE Arcade has been a huge hit on Xbox 360, with nearly 70% of all connected consoles downloading and playing Xbox LIVE Arcade titles.
- Xbox LIVE Marketplace currently offers nearly 190 free trials and demos, giving owners more free playable content than any other console.

Entertainment
-Xbox 360 continues to lead with the largest library of on-demand high-definition movies and television in the U.S. on-demand market. Twenty-eight movie studios and TV networks continue to provide a growing catalogue of premium high- and standard-definition entertainment content that to date totals 2,350 hours.
- Xbox LIVE Marketplace is now the leading provider of on-demand high-definition content in the U.S., providing more than twice the number of hours as leading cable operators.
- Xbox LIVE Marketplace is home to a growing catalogue of more than 9,000 pieces of individual gaming and entertainment content, downloadable at the click of a button.
- Nearly 50% of Xbox LIVE members in the U.S. log into Xbox LIVE Marketplace every time they turn on their console.
- There have been 220 million downloads of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Social Networking
- Xbox LIVE is the largest social network in the living room with 2.4 million IM, text and voice messages sent over the service every day.
- In 2007, Xbox LIVE members are averaging more than one hour a day on the service engaging in a variety of activities such as playing games, watching TV shows or movies or downloading content.
- Since Xbox LIVE launched, 2 billion games sessions have been hosted on the service.
- The average Xbox LIVE Gold subscriber has 23 friends on their Xbox LIVE friends list.
- More than 1 billion cross-game invites have been sent since the launch of Xbox 360.

21. OK, maybe my math skills are a bit rusty:

18 million games sold
7 million live members
attach rate of 5.9

18 million games / 5.9 attach rate = 3.05 million consoles. There are twice as many Live members as there are consoles on the market?

Wait a minute, they also state that 11.6 million consoles were sold worldwide... so either:

* They sold 11.6 million consoles * 5.9 attach rate = 68.44 million games (doubtful)
* They sold 18 million games / 11.6 million consoles = 1.55 attach rate (doesn't seem right...)
* They sold 11.6 million consoles, but only 3.05 million of them are in use today.

Hrm, that would give a failure rate of (11.6 - 3.05) / 11.6 = 73%. Wow, I guess they really are going to take a bath on the warranty extension they offered...

Seriously, can anybody add these numbers up for me?

22. Where is my PS3 with LIVE and Wiimotes?

Posted at 4:53PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Dustin

23. It's an average attach rate...so not all owners have 5.9 games. Math is stupid by the way.

Posted at 4:54PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Bishop

24. The $399 price point will just force sony to have to sell way more software in order to make up for how much money they loose with console sales.

Posted at 4:58PM on Jul 11th 2007 by BowserUSC

25. Here's a stat for you:

Halo 3 pre-orders > PS3 units sold

Posted at 5:06PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Milly

26. Bishop, that's the way an average works. If 10 people have an average of 3 apples each, you can assume that between them there's about 30 apples. You don't need to know how many each person has to estimate the total.

Likewise, if there's an average of 5.9 games per person, and 11 million people that own a 360, there should be about 68 million games sold, but that's quite different from the game-sales number they quoted. There is an obvious, massive disconnect.

Posted at 5:07PM on Jul 11th 2007 by James

27. FYI, they're cherry picking regions and stats. It's egregious. They're looking at the US-only NPD stats when they're favorable (since they're getting their asses kicked *everywhere else* and the US contains 65% of their total sales to consumers), and they're quoting "sold to retailers" and passing it off as "sold to consumers" numbers. Microsoft failed to meet the lowest bound of their (downward revised) goal of shipping 12 million by June, and has just recently reached about 10.1 million units sold to consumers world wide.

They're running a record year for Xbox debts, sales are slowing in every region, and their first party support is very weak. This quarter, slightly more Wii games were purchased than 360 games, and the 360 has been out 3x as long.

The reality isn't as attractive as Microsoft wants you to think it is, that's for sure.

28. Long day at work, and didn't think before I stated that. Math is still stupid though.

29. @21:
I would assume that it's counting Live members with original Xboxes too

32. @15

mike, you need to sit down.

"The Engine that was used to make your bread-winner (Gears Of War) is now signed to exclusively to Sony...Which means there maybe a sequel to GoW BUT it WONT be on 360!"

I know your smoking crack whe I read that line.

I know its been real hard justifying the ps3..

but no need to be smoking crack son.

take cares.. timed exclusive game.

sony doesn't own EPIC or the engine.. they are borrowing it for a few months because Halo is going to steelz all their sales if they bring it on 360 only.. just relax.. try to cough up the crack smoke from your lungs..

33. 7 million people joined live... Big deal! All this says is 7 million people have created a profile with their 360. I'd rather be told how many people were stupid enough to pay for Gold.

Posted at 6:24PM on Jul 11th 2007 by SeriousStan

34. "* They sold 11.6 million consoles * 5.9 attach rate = 68.44 million games (doubtful)"

Maybe they're counting XBL Arcade games?

Posted at 7:25PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Fezmid

35. the only reason why they sold that many is becus all of their 360's kept breakin, wouldnt be so proud of that M$ also you guys had a year head start against ps3 and wii...so dont be braggin if its not a fair contest

Posted at 7:50PM on Jul 11th 2007 by qwerter

36. I love my XBOX. I love Halo. I love Gears. The Wii proves that playability is more important than graphics. The only person I know who owns a PS3 only plays his Wii. Everyone else has an XBOX. I’ve played MGS games & the stories just annoy me so couldn’t care less about a PS3 exclusive. I might buy a PS3 if it drops $200, but since most of the games I prefer are either XBOX exclusives or on both consoles, it’s not particularly compelling. I’d rather get a Wii first.

37. @15 Hmmm...we'll work this in reverse order since all of you PS3 Fanboys are backwards as hell....

5. Well....I'm glad you've seen screenshots of KZ2. Send the rest of us a link to the real game pictures not the supposedly "real in-game" pictures from that dumb cinematic played at E3 '05. I guess then I'll make a judgement.

4. I won't argue this one too much....because I don't care and neither does anyone else that owns a 360. But hey,....it's been rumored...http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/10/konami-isnt-impressed-by-ps3-price-cut/

3. Tell me where it was stated that Epic signed over the Unreal Engine to Sony exclusively? Link? Delusions of Grandeur?

2. Hmmm....Link? Or did you mean over the lifespan of the PS2 and PS3 combined? (And yes I used past-tense for the PS3 as well)

1. Well we now know why you work in retail....Great Stats!!! /sarcasm

Posted at 8:04PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Zrolimit

38. @36 Well it didn't seem to bother Sony using that when they had the year head start with PS2 against the XBOX did it? "We sold more PS2s with our year head start than MS did their XBOXes. We so ROXORs!!!"

Posted at 8:08PM on Jul 11th 2007 by Zrolimit

39. The attach rate is the number of games, peripherals and accessories sold for a game console. For this generation they may be including XBox Live full version games sold, but we don't know that. The reason Mike's math isn't working out is because of this.

40. I love how everything 360 related on this site turns into a "sony sucks!", my-console-is-better-than-your-console pissing match.

Who fucking cares.
If you're a fanboy of a certain company, thats awesome for you. But don't bring it where you're obviously not wanted.
Im tired of fanboyism anyways. I love all three of my next-gen systems equally.
