Speaking to the Official Playstation Magazine, Rockstar's creative vice president, Dan Houser, noted that the Xbox 360's lack of a guaranteed hard drive poses a challenge for the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. When asked directly about the issue, Houser agreed that the hard drive issue presented limitations. It should be noted, however, that Houser elaborated that both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have their share of challenges. As Houser put it, "both have their own particular pleasures and pains." What exactly these pleasures and pains are is anyone's guess.
For what it's worth, the version of Grand Theft Auto IV being shown to the press is running on an Xbox 360. Do with that what you will.

I say developers just say screw the people without hdds. Isn't there like a football manager game that requires a hdd or something? Just create GTA4 that it requires the hdd. It was dumb of MS not to include it with every 360 anyway.

I think not having a guaranteed hard drive in every 360 was microsofts biggest mistake... they should've known better, not just for the sake of storing things that you download, but my god, its useful to the games themselves. I'm still pissed off that because there's like 10 people who have the core 360, developers have to take those people into account.

yeah, really...if you don't have a hdd you should be out of luck.

man, all MS has to do is get rid of the core sku to be able to start making games require hdd's. Its going to have to happen or we're fucked.
I mean its a good thing that MS are much much better at "Compression" than the competition, but cmon. It only makes sense. People that have the core system must be EXTREMELY causual gamers, so how many games a year do they buy anyway? Time for some alienation.

The whole not having an HDD in all 360 models was an incredibly dumb move, especially when the original Xbox had it standard. It was the first console to have a standard HDD and its predecessor doesn't? That's weak and MS should've realized that.

Now that the New 120GB HDD is out, make the 20GB model like ten bucks, better yet, include it with GTAIV. Wasn't there a similar memory expansion with one of the Final Fantasy games for PS2?

I kind of wish they went the PS3 route, made the core have a 20 GB hard drive and the premium a 30 or 40 (plus all the other stuff). You hear about this same HD problem with various developers.
I don't know, it sounds to me like they already have it more or less handled. I mean, the people who have actually seen or played it say it has pretty much no load times... and if the one they've been showing off is the 360 version, it doesn't sound like there's much to worry about.

They should just make the hard drive a requirement for playing the game! How many people out there don't have a hard drive for their 360 anyways? I would be shocked if there are very many people that don't have a hard drive that would want to play this game.

I agree. You already can't do BC on the core system, and unless you spent $40 on a memory card, good luck with having a user profile or xbox live.

OPM am fail. You must be talking about OPM UK.
So, Sony fanboys report that Xbox 360 Suxx0rz and 360 Fanboy reports it as news.
Yawn.

Yup, Microsoft really screwed the pooch with the core system. You should never take features away from your next model, especially since that's one thing the original Xbox had that was a trump card over Playstation.
Bad Microsoft. Bad!

Yup, screw those without the HD.
Just make it a requirement for the game.

I agree with J.
You need to consider the source.
But the PS3tards are having a field day with this one. Now it's because of the 360 all the cross-platform Playstation games will suffer because it's the suxx0rs without an HD! When in reality if you look at the scores for games(most recently FEAR) is that the 360 scores higher. But in the dillusional world that is the PS3 fanboy it makes perfect sense for them.

At what point did the article say 360 Suxx0rz as you say. They interviewed rockstar and rockstar said that 360 hinders "limitatioons". However they also said each console has its advantages and disadvantages. 360's disadvantage is its HDD and disk size. PS3's disadvantage is... im not sure(not to sound like a fanboy i just down know evrything about the consoles tech). but i assure you he interview was real and the comments were real. A magazine published by a high stakes company isnt going to let a magazine with a ton of revanue lie. in short the 360 has problems and so does the ps3, we just dont know what ps3's are yet.

What needs to become very clear is that the "problem" with the Xbox 360 is not that a HD is not included on every single Xbox 360 sold but the hability that the Xbox 360 has of running without the HD attached to it.
Even that there was no Core package and 360 had only one SKU#, the Premium (or PRO like M$ wanna us to call it now), with the hability to run games without the HD attached to the console "limitation" would be present also.
Anyway, all developers have to do is do assure the game works with and without the 360 HD attached.
I can see this ending up in longer loading times even for people with the HD attached (due to lazy, financially limited and cheap publishers) but can't see it limitating the creativity or graphics/AI/Physics prowess of any game.
Except for lesser programming teams and producers not interested in spending more money than the necessary to gain the mainstream audience like EA's type.
About the midia, decompression and streaming on the fly resolves any problem on this field.
Without being able to write only one code that uses the DVD the cost and difficulty of developing rises, but does not get limited. Except if the programmer's hability and production's budget is, but then the limit is not on the platform but on the content creator itself.
Again kudos to the OPM fanboyism on the way they formulate the question to RockStar. They lost (a lot of) respect due to the partiality shown but gain on the publicity that the whole episode generates to the magazine and to the spin that lesser internet writers gave to the whole episode.

By the time GTAIV launches the 360 will be nearly 2 years old. I think it would be completely fair to require a hard drive at that point for some games.

Microsoft really enjoys 'gimping' it's flagship products with this dumb crap.
First they limit size on marketplace arcade titles to cater to some obsolete memory card, and now this.
The core system is just a ball and chain on the 360 franchise.
