Update 2: After numerous reports from readers, there appears to be no extension cable in the box, and the initial story still stands as more or less correct. So, is Konami pulling a fast one, or was there an error in the packaging?
Update: X3F commenter DigitalMatrixIO kindly informs us t
Scott "Bamelin" Strickland of 360 Arcadians was eager to play some Dance Dance Revolution Universe after picking it up today. We started to talk with him about his initial impressions of the game, and he made a startling observation: he couldn't find a slot for his standard Xbox 360 headset. There was a mysterious jack on the side panel near the pad's guide button, but the headset wouldn't fit. We took some pictures over Video Chat of the peripheral to show the predicament. Could the only way to use the "Voice" over Xbox Live multiplayer advertised on the back of the box be with the Wireless Headset? More photos and analysis after the break.

So, here we have the side of the panel with a ... hole. Surely the headset will fit into that so you can talk to people you play online, right?

Bamelin tried as hard as he could to get his headset into the potential jack and could barely get it in halfway.

Unfortunately, Scott didn't have an original Xbox headset handy to see if it was the dongle encasing the 360's input keeping him from chatting up a storm. So, the only way that we can find that you can communicate online is with the Wireless Headset, as the pad binds with the second quadrant if you have a controller and wired mic in the first. The funny thing about this whole thing is that even if the headset did fit, the cord isn't long enough for the average human to dance and talk simultaneously.
So, unless any of you have a fix that we may have overlooked, please let us know. Until then, isn't this bad form on Konami to not support standard Xbox 360 equipment with its custom peripheral, especially when there's a nice "Voice" feature listed on the packaging?

Why would you want to use the wired set while flailing about like you're playing the Wii?

Well, more interesting about is that it kind of breaks the "requirement" that all types of controllers for the system are supposed to have that jack.

uhh because no one wants to drop 60 bucks for a barely functioning mic.

I must not understand what you're asking.
Of course you have to use a wireless headset! Who would possibly be suprised that their headset with a short cable couldn't reach the floor.
I can't believe this store has been published here.

Try using the headset extension cable that is in the box, or the one you got with any of the previous Xbox DDR pads. I have like 3 or 4 of them lying around, but I will be using my wireless one for when I do play online.
By the way the $40 Madkatz one does have a jack that the headset can plug into, but not an extension cable so the headset will not physically reach to anyone's head.

Well I forgot that regular extension cables do not connect to the 360 headset connector but I do remember reading that Konami packs an extension into their bundle pack (I know they always did in the past)...
Someone please (kindly) correctly me if I am mistaken.

Please cease with all the 'after the break' comments in these stories. It isn't clever nor does it even fit.
Enough already.

A quick comment guys:
There was no extender in my box. I double checked after reading the update. For whatever reason it's missing (I see a piece of tape where maybe it should have been attached) I'm actually abit peeved as not only do I have to exchange my DDR, I also got to look stupid in the process.

8: I think the "after the break" comments fit, since they let you know if the rest of the article is worth clicking on the "continue reading" link or not.

I don't really know what they mean by "break"... Maybe if it was an ad or something in the way, but there's just a pixel or two.

While I'm very excited to see DDR released on the 360 and will be picking it up, I'm very annoyed that the timing coincided with my broken toe. No DDR for 6-8 weeks.
I mean, you could play, but not PLAY.

I just opened up my box, and there is no extension cable. The instructions for the pad say that one must be used when using the headphones, but it does not say it is included.

I got it today too... but this "issue" is no biggie. Just take your wireless controller, sign it in as number 2 (or 3, if you have 2 mats), stuff it in your pocket... then dance and chat away.

That won't work. The mat is assigned to your profile. You can't assign the controller to the same profile that the mat is assigned to.
Sure you could sign the controller in under a different profile but you won't be able to hear anyone in the lobby your main (mat) profile is playing over Live in.

In response to the "break" comments. When you navigate our site normally (i.e. not via RSS) some articles are truncated to save space. Thus you will only see up to "the break," then you click a link that reads "continue reading article, etc" so that you can see the rest of the article.
If you read our site via RSS, then you won't see this link as you are directed to the article itself, and not our front page.
