Update: Commenter DjDATZ lets us know that it's still possible to score the co-op achievements by using the Time Trial option instead. So, Core owners may not be able to play full co-op, but they can at least have their achievements.
Crackdown has had lots of hype going for it over the last few weeks. Of course, there's the Halo 3 beta attached to it, but the game itself has earned some considerable street cred itself. Imagine our surprise when we noticed this on the back of the box:
"co-op 2/hard drive required" and "online co-op 2/hard drive required"
We were wary of course, as it could easily have been a misprint. So, we fired up a co-op game with a fellow blogger who was using only a memory unit. Actually, we tried to fire up a co-op game. It wasn't long before he received a message that the hard drive is required for co-op play. Of course, most 360 users have a hard drive, but the fact that Crackdown's co-op requires it -- even over system link -- is important. Sure, it sucks that Core users can't play co-op,
Does this issue affect any 360 Fanboy readers out there?

For the record, I have a Hard Drive, but unplugged it and only used my MU. Also, depending on the size of the update that'll have the remaining 100 GS for Crackdown, Core users may not be able to get that either. I guess we'll have to wait and see. They may be stuck with 850/1000

Yeah, I read this too, although it wasn't terribly surprising given that the entire city is essentially open to you at all times and most anything can be affected.
The manual does mention that you can do the time trial co-op missions without a hard drive, at least...

Geez. 360 Core owners are second class citizen as far as I'm concerned.
Upgrade or learn to deal with it.

In my opinion, if you dont have a HD then you arent that concerned with Gamerscore.

What about all the poor saps who don't have Live Gold. There's a LOT of achievements in a lot of games they can't get.

i wish that ms would have gone the sony route and included a hard drive with all sku's so that the programmers could utilize the hard drive in all games. seems kinda backwards to me that the xbox 1 all had HD's but the next gen does not. i hope that ms gradually phases out the 'core' and offers a low cost HD. of course the memory card is nearly as much as a HD anyway, which makes me question why anyone would spend the jack on one of those instead of getting much more memory in a HD for not much more.

Are there actually people that DON'T have the HDD?!?! If there are, I agree with Arno's comment: Upgrade or learn to deal with it. If the HDD and the extra $$ for Live Gold is a problem then the attainability of ALL the game achievement points should be of no concern. Obviously M$ is somewhat unoffically phasing out memory cards and pushing the HDD with the increased size limit of live arcade games, amoung of online achievements, download content on Live, and the rumored larger HDD coming out soon.

Btw...the online co-op missions have been confirmed that if you beat all the time trials through co-op you can finish the "online co-op missions"
http://www.achieve360points.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25891
"40: Double Trouble
Double your fun - complete your first mission in Co-op mode.
Just play co-op in any game mode and kill a boss. If neither you nor your friend have any bosses left in the campaign, just pick any time trial boss (you get to choose co-op in TT as well) and kill him.
41: Tag Teamer
Partner up and complete every mission in Co-op mode.
This is going to confuse a lot of people. There are possibly two ways of doing this, but I can only confirm #02.
Method #01: When you and a friend both get the game, make sure neither of you kill any bosses before you start co-oping. Then make sure that neither of you kill any while you're not co-oping, as that will save and if both of you kill the same boss (effectively removing him from the game world in both campaign and co-op), you can no longer kill all of them in a single co-op campaign. This is hard way to do it, so I suggest you don't even tr.
Method #02: In the main menu, pick Time Trial and invite a friend. Go through the list and kill every boss in any order you like. If you do this at max level with both players, you can kill almost any boss in under 3 minutes if you rush through it. After you kill the last boss, shouldn't matter which one that ends up being, the achievement will unlock. "

there seems to be far too many issues regarding core users and people lacking xbox live etc. If you're gonna be a gamer get your sh*t together and front the money to do it right. One of the biggest differences between xbox and ps3 is the awesome online that xbox has, why wouldn't you have a gold account? I'm in college, I have to pay for my apartment, car, car insurance, food, etc yet I've put more than 2000 into my xbox 360 stuff so far(controllers, tons of games, etc.), I ain't rich. If it's a priority for you then go get what you want, if it's not a priority for you then don't complain about not having it.

I'm acutally coming around on this HDD thing. I am a the point now were one Xbox 360 in the house is not enough. Between my wife playing Viva Pinata and Burnout Revenge and me wanting to play Gears of War and Oblivion we need another console. But not with a HDD. All I want to do is move my gamesave over on a MU and play some.. or make her move with the MU. Either way I'm glad there is a no HDD option for me. Saves me $100. :)

*Tangent here* I'm surprised the game doesn't have any multiplayer. I'm sure its been mentioned before but it didn't dawn on me that you can only do Co-Op. I wonder if down the road they are going to add an update so you can battle it out, Agent vs. Agent.

The point here is not whether or not you have the HD, it's a matter of MS saying one thing and doing another. When they releas a SKU with no HD, they need to be held accountable for that poor decision.
The problem with the 360s overall success is that they can shit on their customers now. For example, see xbla, refurbbed units, and emulation.
That being said, I have a pro system, but still, I don't understand why people call other users whiners and whatever. MS should be held responsible for their actions. People who whine are doing nothing but holding MS accountable. And that is a good thing. It in no way affects other users except it might make MS think twice before dicking a particular user group over.
And I do have to say, for everyone who bitches about the complainers, you would be the first and loudest people to complain when something goes wrong for you, and you know it.

Perhaps this is the place to ask. I have the Crackdown demo and was considering purchasing the full version...I wanted to play co-op with my wife, but I couldn't figure out if that was possible from the demo (perhaps so in the full version).
So, let me ask it like this - is there any way that my wife and I, on the same console, could play the game together without having to join in some game with a random xbox live user...i.e. could it be just us on the same xbox?
Thanks...

You already can fight agent vs agent in co-op.

BDM...there is no way of doing split screen in this game... :( i wish there was tho...
you need 2 consoles to play co-op whether they be connected over live or system link.

I think the fact that you can easily join someone's game at any time, and that you can each explore the city separately, without any restraints makes up for the fact that you need a HDD.
