According to a recent article on GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft is pushing its third party publishers to release games simultaneously for both Windows Vista and the Xbox 360. The move is designed to facilitate bringing the two platforms together, and no doubt to encourage more developers to make games that are playable across both platforms over Live. According to Rick Wickham, director for Windows Gaming, several titles are expected to debut simultaneously for both platforms this year (we imagine Shadowrun will be the first). He adds that the final decision to make a simultaneous release is left to the publishers.Of course, the big question: is Live more appealing if it allows matches against PC gamers? More players is always better, but there are concerns. For instance, there are already worries that mouse players will dominate controller players at FPS games. What do you think? Are you excited, disinterested, a little verklempt?

The main problem will be deciding which version to buy. With the 360 im guarenteed it will work properly (well most of the time) but on the PC the game is cheaper, i can make my own hardware repairs, dont have to pay for live and can mod a game after i've finshed it. Any then theres the piracy. Its 100 times easier to get a copy of a PC game

Imagine the cheating! Just how easy is it to patch a PC game or mess with the configuration files?
This can only be a bad thing. At least the 360 and Live are a relatively closed system at the minute.

PC users will just make the modding & cheating on Live worse. I'd be less inclined to buy an XBOX game that allowed that.

One, computer gaming is annoying because specs continually change on what you have to have. I know that I will be able to play Halo 3 on my 360, but it is still a year away and if my guess is, to play perfectly on a PC I would have to buy a new one.
Two, I hope this doesn't become some big push for Microsoft where they force developers to put out simultaneous releases. What could force people over to the Sony side, having to develop two games to be able to release one. The already high costs may just push some smaller developers out.
Three, I will sell my Xbox360 (or not play the applicable game) if Live becomes Computer and 360 gamers playing together. The PC is just too open ended for hacks and cheats, but also the mouse is a far more accurate FPS tool than the joystick, which would make console players worse than a 6 year old with a gaming mouse.
Seriously, Microsoft I know you don't care, but the PS3 will be looking pretty attractive if you screw this up.

I'm concerned with the flexibility the PC platform has over its Xbox360 counterpart. PC games ususually allow for much more in-depth modding, scripting, and not to mention hacking and cheating.
Meanwhile, the 360 is closed to a user's modifications. What does this spell for cheating over the Live service? How can we be sure that a person's achievements were gained *without* cheating? I'm not saying the 360 platform is totally secure, but it's definitely a hell of a lot harder to mod stats and attributes in Oblivion on the 360 than it is on the PC. A couple of console commands in a PC game entirely changes the gameplay.
And yes, the Mouse+Keyboard combo vs. 360 controller scares me.

I don't mind as long as there is an option to choose if you want to play Console players only.. or PC players only. I think there will always be more hackers on the PC as it is much easier to do than on a console. PC may also have a hardware advantage like a pimped out video cards at super high resolutions allowing them to see deatail in the distance than console players may not.

This is the worst thing I think that can come to the 360. With Microsoft pushing both platforms, the 360 won't have many good exclusives. In a few years, "Why buy a 360 when I can play on my PC, which I already have?" will be a prevalent mindset, and developers and consumers will see this and we'll get less great games.

All will be well if a single rule applies...
PC gamers should not be able to participate in ranked matches

Microsoft could provide a "service" in Vista that emulates Live. It checks the computer for known cheats, or simply doesn't allow the code produced from a cheat through. Remember that whole Live + Mobile + Vista integration thing? If MS required some version of the XNA bits or the XNA Professional (which will have the network code for Live stuff) then they could easily combat most cheats at the code level. They could do audits to see which cheats should be private or public. It sounds like a lot of work but automated testing could combat a lot of this.
Personally I welcome the mouse and keyboard. There are some games it will be better for but having the opportunity to prove you can own people just as bad on a joystick? Bring it on.

I think they need to have a way to not play v pc people if you don't want to. I am positive that a mouse/keyboard player is going to be way ahead of the pack when playing console folks. Ass whooping galore.

I more then welcome the integration. It opens things up to new possibilities in gaming.
Just because a game is released at the same time for both platforms can only boost sales and the amount of players playing a game. There are way more PC users out there then Xbox 360 users, but not every pc user has a rig that can play certain games without upgrading when it would just be easier to get the game on a 360.
I also like the possibilities of games where you could cross genres much easier since you would have two platforms with different control schemes.
Microsoft has been very protective of there Live service and I am sure they will be working on something to prevent cheating.
Most games today on the pc are checked for cheats by the computer the game is being run on the game itself. That is pretty easy to dupe by just changing out a config file or two. I think Microsoft would authenticate games and files by a server based approach where the Live service actually checks the files. Microsoft has been pushing for a more server based infrastructure to most of there products as of late so I wouldn't be surprised.

I'd like to see an option where you could set 360-only, PC-only, or mixed when you create a game.

#14 -- Totally agree. If MS knows what's good for them, they will always allow players the option to filter game searches based on what platform they are playing on.
Overall, I think this is a worthy experiment and could be a great success.

I seriously hope this does not happen. I prefer playing games on Xbox 360 rahter than PC, because I like to lay on the couch or my bed and hold a controller. I just don't like the feel of a keyboard for gaming. But I know I can aim much more quickly and easily with a mouse, I don't want to play against people on PC with Xbox live.
I was talking to a friend today about Half Life 2 Orange Box and he wondered if we would be playing against PC users on Team Fortress. I said that I couldn't imagine them doing that! This is the first I have heard about this, and it really does concern me. OH well!!!!!!!

Well this means I'm not getting any more games for my 360...
What the fuck is wrong with Microsoft ?! Why would we buy games that are uglier and more expensive than their PC counterpart ?!
Just look at Oblivion, I bought it without hesitation for the 360 only to regret it immensely when I saw what the mod community had achieve with the PC version. It looked 10 times better and yet was less expensive?! I vowed that day to never buy a game on the 360 if it had a PC version. Now they want to make this mandatory ?
Looks like I need to buy a PS3

you can't impulse two gaming plataforms, that have the same games, is just ridiculous. it's like to compete against to yourself.

I fucking swear did you people read the article?! It's not mandatory for publishers to do this just encouraged.
Waaa, Waaa, Waaa, you don't even know what it's going to be like yet. I'm ready for a little change. Bring it on MS.
Oh, and yes it is soooo dumb to compete w/yourself I mean you win if they buy PC or 360 and you get money either way. Yes, don't you know that is just the most stupid concept I've ever heard of.
LOL, Some people will bitch about anything.
