There is a new trailer out for Def Jam Icon, the upcoming hip hop fighting game from EA. Given the game's ... eccentric premise, the trailer is drop dead serious. In fact, we'd wager that more than a few people will be expecting a completely different game after watching it. The game, for those that don't know, is a fighting game with a heavy emphasis on music. The background changes and interacts with the beats of the music. In fact, you choose your characters music track before each match. If you're winning, then your track will play. This can be advantageous for the player that utilizes environmental hazards at the right time (check out Joystiq's impressions for more info). It's an interesting idea, and hopefully one that translates into a fun game.
The trailer, however, shows off something more like a gang drama. In fact, there isn't even a hint in the trailer that Def Jam Icon is a fighting game, and an unrealistic one at that. It's a nice trailer and everything, but it's a little misleading. As a service to prospective players, we've embedded both the new trailer and some footage from the game after the break (second video NSFW).
Urban, gritty, and it has Anthony Anderson. Nice.
Cartoony scenery and fist fighting. Wha?

Who cares? I was a fan of Fight for NY and Vendetta because Aki was behind them. Now, FNR3 Devs EA Chicago took over, took out the wrestling engine, took out the 4 player fighting, and turned it into Fight Night: Ghetto Edition.
Screw this franchise.

Misleading?? How so?? I saw the trailer and I think you're missing the point. From what I've read and saw, it looks like a trailer for the storymode aspect of the game. In my opinion, the game looks great and I can't wait til it comes out.
Modeps - maybe you haven't saw enough of it? What do you know about it?

The last 2 Def jams had a simliar storyline around em but the fights were straight up fighting. I didnt know AKI wasnt doing this version which makes me sad. I really hope the over the top moves are still in the game because they really made the game fun. So far the clips ive seen dont look so great and im a huge fan of this franchise :(

If you ask me, I think that the commercial is fine because perhaps it relates to the story of the game, although it IS impossible to tell it is a fighting game, but you cannot tell it is any kind of game. That is why I think it isn't too bad of a commercial. As far as how the game looks, i think i would be laughing too much at how far people fly when i kick them to be paying any attention to the story. That footage just looks like a loony tune.

How's the trailer misleading if it's just giving you a sneek peak into the story mode that show's the tension you're gonna go through with Anthony Anderson? I just think it'll make you want to know more behind the story gaining your fame of building up your label, making it to the top, and sealing your crown there by any means necessary.
