GreenDaily: Because nature can't wait until tomorrow.

Fall update fix released

Major Nelson reports -- from a rest stop in Massachusetts -- that a fix has been created for those having trouble with the Fall Update. Those of you that have had no problems with the update will not be prompted to get the fix and may continue on as if nothing happened. Those of you who have had trouble should call Xbox Support. We're not really sure how you apply an update to a bricked console, but that's probably why you have to call customer support. If anyone out there manages to get this patch, leave a comment here and tell us what the process was like.

[Thanks, Glenn]

21. "Why not take the chance just for GOW, COD3 and of course Rainbow Six?"

I got all 3 preordered. I'm on my second 360, my launch core died in August. I bought a Platinum August 7th and called Microsoft last night to get the 2 year service contract. They said my 3 month (90 day) warranty is already up. Umm, how? After being on the phone for 45 minutes and waiting for the rep to get a supervisor involved my cell phone dropped the call. Called back and got someone else. Same deal, he said the previous person failed to put notes under my serial# so we had to start over. Once again on hold for a supervisor, dropped call. I realize Microsoft is not responsible for my horrible cell service. Just annoying that I'm trying to give them more money and they won't accept it. I bought my second system 8.7.06 and they said the factory warranty expired on 10.13.06. How does that make sense?

22. How come some people keep having problems with their console dying multiple times? I know alot of people with the system and never knew anyone have any problems. Either these people arent taking care of their system or they have really bad luck. Or the people in these blogs are really sony or nintendo fans and are lying to give the system bad publicity.

23. Thats just it. I want to take the chance to play GOW, but don't want to play a continuous game of ring-around-the-rosey with the local big box retailer because a brand new system keeps bricking.

Answer me this if you would please: when will this update ship with brand new systems?

24. People with bricked consoles are a tiny but vocal minority. It's understandable as their shiny sparkly console just died and I'd be pissed off enough to shout about it too, but still a tiny minority.

Also, be assured that Microsoft are doing things and not just "waiting a few hours". That means they're doing something in that few hours and not just sitting around sipping lattes.

And they do test these things, it's insane to think they wouldn't. However there's always a large variation in hardware, and things slip through the net. In this case it's a pretty big blunder, and I'll agree that even though they're trying to patch essentially the same hardware each time they are cocking it up pretty badly by knocking out machines.

25. Sorry about that post, my bad the Sony zombies want to play all the games. A sequel to Dead Rising already? wow, Nov 17th malls across the nation full of them. "Give me system, give me system, I got no brainssssss."

26. i wonder how new they were talking when they said only new 360's were affected. i bought mine 2 weeks ago and the update works fine. no problems at all.

27. Wait, MS released a patch to fix a patch? thats dumb, and funny at the same time, only MS.

28. Can anybody actually confirm that there is a new version of the update that doesnt brick the console. I bought a 360 the day the new update was released and it was bricked by the update, and im hesitant to install it on my new one as I dont really want the same problem. Xbox support was useless.

29. "I bought a 360 the day the new update was released and it was bricked by the update, and im hesitant to install it on my new one as I dont really want the same problem." - quote from Alden

Exactly why I'm concerned at buying a new system at this moment. If I understand him correctly, he bought a new system the day the fall update became available, and it's bricked his system already. He has already returned it, and received a new one. I would be hesitant to try the update again.

30. boris schneider-johne sez, the installer was faulty and not the update itself. ms replaced the installer. now there should be no risk to install the fall update - even on "new/repaired" 360's

31. The only people who Dismiss the Problem are Fanboys.

My 360 is running fine still. Thank god.

33. my Xbox has been bricked ("ring of death") yet microsoft is telling me that i will have to pay the replacement of my console even though it was a result of the update...

Posted at 7:35AM on Nov 4th 2006 by tommy

34. Well,
Just got off the phone with Xbox Support. Went through the whole schpeel. Bottom line, My 360 is McAllen, Texas bound for "repair" and I'm exactly $139.90 poorer over a problem that isn't even my fault.

Even though I'm frustrated and have absolutely no confidence my problems are solved, I found it quite amusing that in the background of the call, I could hear all the other agents on calls with the exact same problem I have! You could hear:

"okay sir, now how many lights are red?"
"okay sir, at what point does it freeze?"

Unbelievable. Yet I still had to pay. For some strange reason, I have a feeling that I'll get those repair costs refunded.

35. I just got the new "Non-bricking" update, and lo and behold it manages to brick my console and give me the three red lights of death... a hardware malfunction. Fantastic.

36. I bought one of the first 360's last November.
It bricked just out of the first 90 days.
I sent it into M$, they sent me another
refurbished 360. Manufacture date 1/3/06.
This new update bricked my 360 now they say
they won't fix it because the manufacure date
is after 12/31/06. Needless to say I am
not happy. They want $135.00 plus shipping
to fix it.

37. Anybody know if the latest fall update is totally
fixed now ? Can a new/refurb console be safely updated ?? Does MS have any official comment on this issue ???

38. Let's all face it microsoft are taking the piss, i'm on my 3rd xbox in 1 year and now since this so called "update" my discs don't read anymore. I have to keep on reseting my xbox until it works. Looks like another new xbox is on it's way with 3months of life until something else goes wrong - what a load of shit microsoft - with all that money and expertise what are you doing employing monkeys with no arms!!!!!!!!!

39. Ive been typing countless posts, emails, etc, to microsoft, and called them no less then 4 times about there update, and they have actuley told me its just a coindence that only a million units have failed since the update. Its bloody friggen amazing how stupid they think we are.

40. I purchased a 360 on launch day and have had no problems at all. Tonight I downloaded the latest update and my machine is freezing with or without a disc in it. At times, the three red lights come on. I called Microsoft and they had no solution. The rep admitted that it appears the update caused the problem. I'm not buying another console. What's the answer?
