HD-DVD add-on pr0n

No, not High Definition pr0n, HD-DVD hardware pr0n. My apologies to our RSS readers who clicked through hoping for the real thing. Now, for all of you hardware people out there that have been dying to see the USB ports on the new HD-DVD add-on, look no further. Mmm...those are some nice ports. Look at the back o' that box. Ooh, that's a nice wireless adapter mounting bracket, too. Yeah, that's nice. Follow the read link for a (tiny) shot of the interface.

Now, can we get a real price please?

[Thanks, Pete]

i say $199.99

its to high for most casual users, about right for the hard core gamer not to freak out over, and low enough to undermine Blue Ray and make the HDDVD guys happy.

so $299 Core + $199 HDVD = $500 + tax
which will be atleast $100 cheaper then the POS3
simlair blue ray offerings. maybe then the POS3 fanboys will shut up and realized their console is a over priced, DRM'ed up and down, Forced formated dishing, blood sucking leech of a console.

with crappy dev support tools.

Are you kidding me? They could prize the PS3 at 1000 and they would still be arguing its not overpriced.

Not to be a PS3 fanboy or anything, ('cause PS3 sucks) but if it were $200, then a 360 plus the HDDVD would come to the same price as a PS3. The Core + HD DVD would be $500 which is the price of the base PS3. However, the base PS3 also comes with 20GB HD, essentially making it 'cheaper'. So I'm hoping the HD-DVD addon won't be any more than $150. But hey, as MS is always saying, they're about choice. Not everyone wants HD-DVD. So it still works out better for those people. Not to mention, the HD DVD has been proven superior to Bluray... so far.

I'm still not liking the front of the add-on. They should have it matching the front of the 360. It looks to "off" when you sit it and the 360 next to or on top of one another.

I'm also hoping this is no more than $150 but I have a feelin it will be $199.

$99 is an unrealistic price point but at that price they WILL sell all day and drive system sales and hddvd discs, stratospherically vertical. It would be a perfect place to 'buy market share' or whatever those industry insiders call it.

If MS wants to steal the show this christmas from sold out ps3's a $99 drive would do it!

Whata way to bury Sony, if they wanted to. Drop the price on the 360 this christmas time, then sell this for $99, and you would have people buying the 360 instead of PS3, plus getting HD-DVD, another blow to Sony, a plus for MS. They are losing money as it is, and this could really be an ace in the hole- You don't "have" to get a next-gen disc reader, but you Can.

What else will MS invent to connect to the 360?

I don't think its too unrealistic for MS to realease it for $99. Its a plain jane player with a light, but what really makes it awesome will be the interface, and the control schemes that MS can do with it, with the 3sexy. Everyone is forgetting, this is Microsoft, software gaint, willing to undermine the PS3 at any cost!! f yeah

To be competitive IMHO, it has to cost $100.

premium 360 = $400
WiFi adapter = $100
HD-DVD = $100
That's $600, which is the same price as the PS3 with WiFi, but it also has a 60 gig hdd. If the HD-DVD drive costs $200. Then you're looking at $700 for a lesser system.

The drive doesn't have to be very complex. I think the Toshiba player probably has both a red and blue laser to stay backwards compatible with DVD and CD. They could just put a blue laser in this thing to only play HD-DVD. The thing has zero brains. It's more or less a drive in an enclosure.

The stand alone Toshiba player is more or less a PC. It has a bunch of ram, big processor and such. All that is in the 360 itself.

I will do back flips if it costs $100 and accept $150. If it costs $200, I'm going to be one pissed hombre.

Im thinking its going to cost about $100. All the work is done in the 360. All this is, is a drive and a laser. It cant cost too much to make, plus theyre willing to take a loss on it to beat out blu-ray, though they wont really need to, HD-DVD is definitely going to be the winner. I'll say it again, solely because of its name, HD-DVD will come out on top.

Wifi is not a must have to be listed as such. For gaming online your much better of with LAN anyway to minimize lag.

And no matter what crazy addition you do...cost of entry for a 360 is still $399 for practical purposes (The $299 core is far too limited without a hard drive). And cost of entry for PS3 is still $499 and $599. There will be 6-10 million people this fall that already have a 360 that can purchase this device as an add on at their own leisure or not.

That's the beauty of it...Consumer Choice!

Everyone joked about it for months...but Blu-Ray truly is appearing to be headed the way of UMD format...sooner rather than later.

The entry level Xbox 360 is $299, pure and simple. Whether or not anyone believes it's suitable for others is a matter of personal opinion.

If you have a memory storage unit, you can perform saves or download any XBLA game.

If you neither have a hard drive or memory unit, you're limiting to playing games without saving and you're unable to download content.

The entry core system can be upgraded at any time later to the same functionality as the Premium system, which is $399.

If MS does it right. You know with timing and the price, then Sony could have a problem. It is true that HD DVD is better than Blu Ray (for now) since bluray is having difficulties with their dual layer 50 GB cds. Plus they chose a 10 year old codec, MPEG-2. That's a lawls right there. Traing Day was the first milti format title and HD DVD just owned the crap out of blu ray, not even funny. As far as the price of this little device goes, it can't go over $99. I actually think the MS will announce the price days before sony releases PS3. So there is no time to react.

@18 (or rather with 18)

A remember from a previous Joystiq article that in reference to the HD drive, someone from Microsoft has been quoted as saying that it would be the cheapest HD player on the market. Now at the time I thought, yeah of course, at $200 (or whatever) of course it will be the cheapest player, but you still need a 360 to make it work.

Having read yours and the above posts, I'm thinking what they meant is this:

$299 CORE + $100 HD Drive = $399 HD Player
Vs
$499 Toshiba HD Player.

Thus the 360 solution becomes the cheapest HD player on the market. Even against a $500 PS3, HD still has the price advantage.

Add this to the real AV geeks saying that HD looks better, and there still not being dual layer BlueRay discs, and there goes any advantage BR had.

HD is cheaper, looks better and can store more. The 360 with a TON on awesome games, along a $100 HD driver, plus summer's movies on HDDVD plus the Wii all for Christmas.

An overpriced PS3 sells out due to the high number of fanboys, but once stock settles, they stop selling. With over 10 million 360's against 6 million PS3, plus Cell development costs and publisher support for Sony gets worse...not better. And Christmas has given HD a huge lead over BR.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Sony doesn't exist (at least the way we know her now) in another 5 years. They are digging their own graves, and smiling while they do it!

Wrong. The article specifically and clearly said that it would be the cheapest HD-DVD player for... ***THOSE WHO ALREADY OWN A 360***

If you already have a 360 and wanted an HD-DVD player, you could buy a $499 Toshiba unit, or, the MS HD-DVD add-on for $399.

You people are living in a fantasy world if you think the HD-DVD add-on is going to be $99... or even $200. MS charges $99 for their WiFi adapter!
