IGN confirmed with Rockstar that the countdown clock in question isn't counting down to any new announcement and is actually quite old. It was used once, way back in the 1990s to countdown to GTA2's release onto the PS1. But why the 2008 countdown expiration? Simple. The countdown code is messed up because it doesn't understand how to take into account the 2000s. So, no GTA2 for the XBLA, no new announcement, just an old clock that should have been removed ages ago.

Aren't they free for PC or something? They're not that good if you have GTA4 :)

Most companies don't remove old sites whatsoever. You can still find crap about ancient Kriss Kross albums on their record label's site.

Actually, the site is really funny... They have a photo of the two with a woman who is placed in by Photoshop. You can still see the white pixels around where they cut her out.

Pardon my ignorance in such matters, but if it couldn't take into account the 2000's, would it not have waited until 2098?

I think it just looks at the last number. So it'd be 8, as in 1998.
Anyway, kinda cool that this thing started back up again. But I don't see the point in having this on XBLA, unless it'd be free. Rockstar lets you download GTA 1 and 2 from their website.

Looking at the javascript in the source, that's exactly what it does. But what I find more awesome is that the R* guys even injected humor into their friggin' JS source:
if (iveGotFlash) {
theDudeAbides();
}
Note to self: include movie references in future web programming projects.
