The rumor comes straight out of the March issue of EGM and although they don't reveal too many specifics, EGM does hint that Dead Rising 2's Western developer is based in L.A. Our friends over at Joystiq are putting their developer chips on Gearbox as we say "Dead Rising 2? ZOMG!" We guess it's also worth mentioning that they claim the zombie sequel is being developed as multi-platform title. Meh to that.

I guess I just don't understand why Capcom would farm out what has arguably been its most successful and popular new franchise. You'd think they'd handle it directly.

Seriously. They did such a good job on the first game. Aren't they worried someone else will screw it up?

I wasn't impressed with the first's gameplay... annoyances.
Like Glitchy Weapon Pickup/Use, odd radii's for attacks on and attacks by Zombs, and the Annoying Forced Story Cuts, Old Black men on walkies, etc...
Hopefully whoever pick'd up the game can get our Papparazzo Frank off that HGH, or at least a Jacket sans shoulder pads.

It's also the first game in the series... I would be surprised if many of these weren't addressed if even the same exact team handled the sequel.

Maybe they are pulling a "Infinity Ward" and actually are working on DR3.....? Maybe.

the game needs multiplayer...
imagine 4 player co-op... that would be amazing.

Capcom knows that this is a cash cow and would not hand it off unless they were completely confident they can pull it off.

Will they add any more gameplay and a decent save system to it? I got bored of the 'pick up weapon, hammer attack button, get new weapon, hammer attack button,... to gradually move around the place...

I really liked DR. It took me a while to get into the rhythm of it.
What I found most annoying was that some of the boss battles were ridiculously tough like the 3 felons in the truck and the truck in the tunnel, not stopping the truck per se but getting out of the tunnels once you've finished the fight. I stopped playing it because I couldn't get out of the tunnels. Constantly starting that scenario over and over really pissed me off.
Co-op would be incredibly awesome.

If it has co-op and gives me a bigger place to explore, perhaps an entire town if possible I'll be happy with it and buy it no matter what.

zomg Dead Rising 2?!
The first Dead Rising is one of the reasons I bought an Xbox 360 in the first place! I remember the day when I first saw a commercial for it, I was in shock and awe until I found out that at the end it said...Only for Xbox 360. 9 months later I had one, and enjoyed Dead Rising through and through!

Dead Rising was the reason I bought an Xbox 360, I wasn't going to buy one because the original Xbox had so few fun games, but with games like this and Mass Effect, and Halo 3, and Saints Row, the 360 rules.

I think I read at some point that DR sold poorly in Japan and despite good numbers in the US, Capcom dissolved and scattered the original dev team. If they really have farmed out the sequel's development to a US based team, it would lend credence to the rumors that the initial hesitance to a DR sequel was due to the concern over poor sales in Japan.
