Our friends over at Joystiq got a chance to take a look at Bethesda's Fallout 3 and even though the franchise has been on hiatus for a while, the game sounds like it'll be sure to please. Fallout 3's story takes place 30 years after the previous in Washington DC based Vault 101 where you live among the many survivors. But then things get a little mysterious when your father goes missing, so you take it upon yourself to hack the computer system, open the vault, and crawl outside for the first time. The game is quite reminiscent of an Oblivion feel, but the overall tone, graphical improvements and odd weapons like the Suck-o-Tron give Fallout 3 a unique tone and a lot of promise. Go ahead and check out Joystiq's full preview and additional list of Fallout 3 factoids that they learned after grilling the Bethesda dev team. But don't get too excited just yet fanboys, because this little gem is slated for a Fall 2008 release.

He said a shooter, is oblivion a shooter? Didnt think so.
Topic.
Wow, thats a really long way off. I'd be more excited about this game if it was a 360 exclusive. Also by that time I really hope to have Gears 2 by then or hell who knows maybe even Mass Effect 2 lol.

You know, I'm still not convinced that Fallout 3 is going to be a "true" shooter. All of the Fallout purists that are throwing a huge fit haven't read enough information about the game, methinks.
In Game Informer's extensive preview of Fallout 3, the designers made a point to repeat "we don't want Fallout 3 to be a shooter."
As I understand it, you can pause combat to select targets... essentially removing the twitch element of the gameplay to focus more on the RPG elements. Seems like a cool idea, if it will work.
Just because a game is 3D, doesn't automatically make it a shooter. Think of it as Oblivion with guns, rather than Gears of Fallout.

I'm picturing the combat system being a real-time turn-based hybrid kinda like Wizardry 8. Most certainly a hardcore RPG, but in a 1st person perspective.
I just hope they don't go too far down the route of the FPS.
