USA Today published their critique of the best and worst 2006 had to offer in the video game industry. Not that these kinds of articles aren't a dime a dozen now a days, but it's an interesting read no matter. A few interesting highlights would be awards for Best First-Person Shooter going to Gears of War (shouldn't that be best second person shooter?), Best Game going to Oblivion, and the Playstation 3 taking home the Worst Console Launch of 2006 award (stiff competition). We're also intrigued by the Worst Industry Trend award going to micro-payments, which I'm sure most people would agree with. Although, micro-payments aren't that big of a deal as long as they are of value and aren't overpriced ... damn horse.[Via Digg]

it's third person. there's no such format as "second-person-shooter." but yea, they dropped the ball on that one.

Actually... I was referencing to our dear friend Cliffy B coining the term "second person view". I guess that didn't come off as intended... damnit it all to hell.

Gears is third person. Second person would be if you played as the person getting shot.

3rd person is more like Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance where you have full control of the camera to pivot around your character.
GoW and GR:AW are more of a 1st person view with the camera pulled back 3 feet or so... but meh, whatever.

ACtually, the 3rd person snafu is the fault of the AP, who wrote the article. USA Today just carried it.

No it wouldn't be the second person, it would be third person view, and its called that because the second person would be what the first person is looking at. The third person would be able to see both people.

For me the term 'second person' seems as valid a 'third person', just not as standard. 'Third person' was probably used originally because second person narratives aren't common in literature, and most books are either first or third person.
It should probably be divided up something like this:
First person: Quake - the player is 'in' the character that represents themselves.
Second person: Gears of War - the player is looking at the character they are controlling.
Third person: The Sims - the player doesn't have a representation of themselves in the game.

Hey, this isn't a USA Today article, it's an Associated Press article. You should properly credit the news service that reported it, not the newspaper in which it appeared. (In fact, it will appear in many papers.)
