We saw a new trailer for Superman Returns this morning and were stricken with strange thoughts. We were thinking, "Hey, that doesn't look that bad. Looks pretty fun, actually. It's a Superman game that might not suck. And it's made by EA. Wha?" We know, it was a very strange thought process, and one that is not likely to repeat itself. The most compelling thing about the trailer might actually be the music. Much like the recent Gears of War teaser, the music complemented the action very well.
Still, there are other Superman trailers that don't look so hot. General gameplay trailers, for example, leave a lot to be desired. So, as a public service, we've embedded two videos after the break. The first is the slickly produced trailer, and the second is straight gameplay. Both of them were released this month, so these are from the same build.
Super slick. Makes the game look great.
This is just captured gameplay. No soundtrack, no editing.
We'll save final judgment for the actual release of the game, but this serves to highlight how important a good trailer can be. Just watching the gameplay isn't nearly as exciting. Having watched both of these, which one actually makes you want the game (if at all)?

I wonder if the ability to fly will be unlockable for 200 MS Points; and if said ability will cost 750,000 in-game dollars to buy, which is conveniently sold on the Marketplace for some more MS Points.

So I didn't bother with the trailer, I already know EA makes great trailers; the games rarely seem to live up them though. I DID watch the gameplay video however... and it looks like a weak-sauce ripoff of the Spiderman franchise. If gameplay looks that uninspired in the video, I shudder to think how it actually plays.

As for the game, I'm somewhat optimistic. 6 months ago I would have laughed because the original impressions I got back then were that the game was rushed. But now, the more I've seen of it lately, it should be a fairly good romp because it was actually delayed. EA games delayed? Crazy.

Actually, you can use all of Superman's powers right from the beginning of the game. It's really freakin good, better than Hulk or the Spider-Man games in my opinion.
You really feel like Superman when you're playing. Check out my preview/review article here...

I forgot to mention in the above comment. My favorite thing about it is how Superman doesn't have a health bar. You can't die, but Metropolis has a health bar. You refill it by putting out fires or saving people. So when you're fighting Mongul and he's causing destruction to the city, you can use your super breath to blow him into the air. Pick someone up, fly them to an ambulance at Super Speed (To get the city more health) and fly back to him before he hits the ground.

@#10 The graphics are pretty far above the XBOX. It was developed for the 360 and scaled down for the XBOX. On the 360 they managed to load the entire city into RAM so you can see all 80 square miles (and a lot more) from the highest point, it's also how you can travel at 600MPH with no loading times.
@#11 That was Metallo phase 2. The game is very loosly based on the movie, most of the movie stuff happens in cutscenes, most everything else is original.

Looks stupid and knowing EA you'll have to spend 400 points to unlock the 'start game' option of the main menu.
