Analyst Lazard Capital Markets says North American Xbox 360 sales are tracking closer to 4.5 million rather than the previously expected nice round 5 million::"Xbox 360 supplies improved significantly over the course of the year following initial hardware constraints, and it appears that pent-up consumer demand has largely been fulfilled. However, it is possible that an expanding software release calendar, as well as limited supplies of new PS3 and Wii hardware could help boost 360 unit sales over the holidays."
Yep, I hear sales go up at Christmas. I wonder if anybody with a desktop and a grasp of the obvious can be an analyst. Of course, they are raising expectations for the PS3 and Wii.

Am I the only one who noticed that the 360 sold 50% more than the original Xbox 1 in the past three months? Yes, the total number of sold 360s is less than that of the Xbox at the same point in time, but this was because of the enormous shortage during the 2005 holiday season. While there were plenty of Xboxes in 2001 for holiday shoppers, it was just about impossible to find a 360 in 2005. This gave the Xbox a headstart of 800,000 sold consoles, a difference the 360 is gobbling up with each passing month since it's currently selling 50% better than its predecessor.
If you look at total sales the 360 perhaps disappoints, but if you look at current monthly sales the 360 is doing very well indeeed. And it will overtake the Xbox this holiday season and if the current sales projection hold, it will do substantially better in the long run.

Actually when you look at the world wide sales Microsoft is actually over its predicted sales targets(in this analysis the author only counts US sales without crediting the UK or Australia where the console has sold bucketloads).
If the sales keep up the original XBOX's sales of 24 million could be reached by the 360 in about 1-1.25 years therefore being a larger success.

How you can raise expectations for PS3 when Sony keeps cutting unit shipments for the year is kind of beyond me.
We're still in that pre-PS3 launch FUD period, and Sony's going to keep it rolling as long as possible. Eventually someone's going to notice that all their friends have 360s, and they're playing some pretty fucking awesome games, while PS3 users aren't.

I know of 2 people that are merely waiting for GoW to be released and another waiting for Christmas for his kids. I think sales are going to get really hot in November/December.

People are expecting something new on holidays, that's why the sales are lower than expected

I laugh when people cite analysts as reliable source for anything. Their conclusions are not always correct. And there are the analysts who have obvious bias or have suspect funding.
Truth is, anyone can be an analyst. But how many of you can name a reliable analyst who is right more often than wrong?

How can they raise the expectations on the PS3, when Sony might not have the 400,000 units they announced?

Here is an article comment that I found on another site:
4.5 Million is in regards to only North America. Microsoft is still on pace to achieve their goal of 10 million Xbox 360 systems sold worldwide by the end of 2006.
This particular analyst was simply pointing out that if Microsoft would have been lowering prices and including "pack-in" deals in North America, the way that they are in Europe and Japan, the Xbox 360 would be at 5 million systems rather than 4.5 million systems in North America.
In other words, the potential is there to actually exceed the 10 million worldwide sales goal, if Microsoft would be more aggressive with the North American market.
Personally, I think Microsoft should lower the price of the Xbox 360 a little bit (at least $50) and include at least one pack-in game with the Xbox 360. If Microsoft were to do that, Sony would NEVER be able to catch up.
The way things are now, Next-Generation analysts said yesterday that it would take Sony until at least the year 2010 to catch up to the Xbox 360 in terms of sales.

Wowzers! Here is another piece of information I found out:
I was looking on an official Sony website, and it says that the Playstation 3 will NOT be backward compatible with Playstation and Playstation 2 games. Listen to this stuff:
- The Playstation 3 will only play games for the PS1 and PS2 in the EXACT same way that they were designed to appear on the original PS1 and PS2. This is NOT a good thing, because those systems didn't have anti-aliasing, which means that the games will look TERRIBLE on a HDTV because of all of the jagged lines.
- You know how the Xbox 360 uses software emulation to play Xbox games in a way that makes the Xbox games run in High-Definition resolution, and make the overall graphics look better...well, the Playstation 3 will NOT be able to do that!
- Here is the thing that is really devastating: Playstation 3 will only be backward compatible with as few as 50% of Playstation 2 and Playstation 1 games! I read it myself on a couple different websites, include a Sony website! Sony's Ken Kutaragi says that only PS1 and PS2 games that were designed with the original Technical Requirement Criteria in mind will work on the Playstation 3. That means as few as 50%.
- Mr. Kutaragi of Sony goes on to say that whether it was on purpose or an accident, many of the Playstation and Playstation 2 games DO NOT work on the Playstation 3 because they were not designed according to the Technical Requirement Criteria of the original PS1 and PS2 hardware!
- This means as few as 50% of PS1 and PS2 games will work on the Playstation 3, but this can't be upgraded, because the Playstation 3 uses hardware in order make the PS3 backward compatible, not software emulation that is constantly growing and improving, like the Xbox 360.
- WOW! That is DEVASTATING news that will be a TITANIC sized disappointment for people to hear. Playstation 3 with such disappointing backward compatibility.
