These days, it seems like announcing a demo is almost as important as announcing the launch date of a game. Not one to be late to the party, Avalanche Studios has come through with a date for the demo of Just Cause. In case the headline didn't tip you off, the demo should hit Marketplace (and PC) on August 24th. Starring a skydiving, carjacking, black wearing operative, Just Cause looks to give 360 owners their first non-urban sandbox game.
Anybody expecting this to top Saints Row?

Unless it has online multiplayer in the same vein as Saints Row, I don't think it will be able to compete in the long run. The online aspects of SR are really what seperates the game from other sandbox-esque titles, as it combines the online representation of your character with a Sims-like level of customization and a simple but fun third-person shooting engine.
Plus, giving American culture, the "white suburban thug" kid far outweighs the "cuban revolutionary" kid.

I can't wait to try it out. I really just want the game to feed my skydiving hunger. Has anyone seen any pictures or videos of the enemies? I'm not sure what the combat is like and would love to see or read anything about it that you guys have found.

I got paid to watch an early video of this game and give my thoughts. Some scens were pretty cool like him driving on a motorcyle near a cliff, and using this gun to shoot at an airplane and zipline to the plan and knock the pilot out and then fly the game. The 3rd person shooting seemed to be a little bughy though. They did not say it was this game, but I knew it was from the start lol.

I'm looking more forward to this then Saints Row. The whole urban gangster theme is so overdone these days, so it'll be nice to have something different.

I highly doubt Saint's Row will be any good. Well, a little but enjoyable, probably, but not near as good as GTA. The number of content is simply not big enough.
Just Cause is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge! From what I've seen, I'm not sure if the gameplay itself is that good, though, but a demo will clarify.

Maybe my internal definition of "sandbox game" is flawed, but wasn't Oblivion one?

Sandbox? Yes. A Mercenaries-style theme? Hellz yeah! This and Crackdown look to be rocking my 360 this fall.

This game just looks stupid. Sure i'll down load it because the graphics are stunning, but come on! Jumping from bikes to planes and skydiving and steeling boats. I don't know, it just looks silly

No, silly. To be a sandbox game it must look and feel as much like GTA in terms of both control and setting as possible. Which is also why Mr. Mitchell seems to expect Saints' Row to be the better game, it more closely resembles GTA than any other game to date...
Oblivion on the other hand is an open world that allows the gamer to do conduct themselves however they want, play with the worlds physics, etc., kind of like playing in an... er... sandbox...

It probably won't take much to top Saints Row.

I suppose you could call Oblivion a sandbox game, I've always considered it a western style RPG.
As for my preferences, I'm actually leaning towards Just Cause. GTA has never really done anything for me, and I doubt Saints Row will be different.

Why can't it be both? as far as genre... I think RPG refers to a style of gameplay, whereas Sandbox refers to a style of game world. For example, Fable is an RPG, but not a sandbox game. Oblivion is both RPG and Sandbox game. GTA/Saints' Row/Just Cause I'd call 3rd person action sandbox games.
Unless you're refering to sandbox as a genre exclusively... in which case GTA/etc. don't *really* qualify when you think about it; they have too much direction/story... really only games like the Sim line qualify as "sandbox as genre" games.
