Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams teaser confirmed

Remember that rumored teaser trailer for BioShock 2 that was reportedly found within the depths of the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock? After a week of speculation, 2K Games has confirmed the trailer is legitimate. Gamers can download the trailer on the official BioShock website and on the Xbox Live Marketplace, now. Considering the trailer can be accessed on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 it appears that the title will find its way to all platforms but 2K rep Charlie Sinhaseni was a bit cagey on the details in a response to GameSpot, saying only "BioShock 2 is destined for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC platforms."

No announcement has been made regarding any kind of release schedule, timed exclusivity or exclusive downloadable content for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams, which is being developed by 2K Marin and not 2K Boston -- developers of the award-winning original. Time to open that wallet Microsoft!

Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams teased within the depths of the PS3 original

According to internet chatter, a teaser trailer for 2K Marin's sequel to the critically acclaimed shooter has been discovered. CVG is reporting that a teaser for the upcoming sequel unlocks within the menus of the PlayStation 3 version when the game is completed. The trailer opens with a title card that reads "Atlantic Ocean" and pans away from a Big Daddy stuffed animal being held by, what looks like, a grown up Little Sister as she looks off into the water. Pillars then begin to form around her and the title screen reveals the name "Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams."

Joystiq has contacted 2K Games for confirmation on the game and trailer.

Bioshock 3 confirmed, likely coming with the movie

While it was assumed when there was an announcement of Bioshock 2, it's now been confirmed that the series is officially set to be a trilogy. In an investor conference call Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO discussed the movie and the likelihood that it wouldn't be ready in time for the second game (duh) but that it could see release alongside the third in the series. Given the surprising sales of the first game and the potential of the IP at this point, Bioshock 3 is as sure of a thing now as Halo 3 was in 2003. That is to say financially guaranteed, but a long way off.

Bioshock 2: "Rube Goldberg machines of death"

Next Generation was able to catch up with 2K Marin Creative Director, Jordan Thomas, after a presentation on emergent gameplay he delivered at University of Teesside's Animex festival. Next Gen's interview is in the main concerned with gameplay theory, but towards the end shifts focus to Bioshock 2. As his presentation and interview had to do with emergent gameplay, Next Gen assumes that this will be a larger focus in Bioshock 2. Thomas comments that "I really like the idea of the player being able to create dynamic physical attachments – Rube Goldberg machines of death!" which gives us a pretty good idea of the creative direction that the sequel will be taking.

Along with that choice quote was another one that was hopefully a bit more of a promise than a hyperbole: "in the future I'll want to generate much more of that – maybe give the player the ability to steal superpowers from characters that are wandering around the world, or alter their behavior in ways that amount to more than just getting them to fight each other. There's a lot of potential real estate there." So long as they make good on that potential, we'll be here to play it.

BioShock 2 announced, drops Q4 2009

After BioShock was met with critical and commercial success the prospect of a sequel seemed to be a foregone conclusion and today 2K Games finally admitted that the title is in the works. The surprising news is that 2K Boston, formally Irrational Games, will not be at the helm of BioShock 2's development, rather the job has been tasked to 2K Marin, who are reportedly staffed with former Irrational Games members. No involvement from Ken Levine was mentioned during the announcement.

The info dropped from an investor relations report 2K released today. With talks of an impending buyout on the horizon for parent company Take Two, the timing of this announcement couldn't be better. While the average gamer doesn't care about the business side of the industry, it will be interesting to see how Take Two's stock spikes based on the announcement. Either way, gamers can expect to take-out another group of Big Daddies in the last months of 2009 - so start lining up.

Gorgeous but totally unofficial BioShock 2 art

As a preemptive warning to those searching for any BioShock 2 news, details or leaked assets. This concept art isn't real. Well, actually, let us re-phrase that. This concept art is real, but is not tied to the yet to be announced BioShock 2 and is actually the work of a talented artist by the name of Ben Mauro. The reason the artwork looks very BioShock'esque is because Mr. Mauro actually took inspiration from BioShock to create the concept art and a BioShock 2 "pitch" for his college architecture course. We think everyone can agree that it's lovely art and it makes our head ponder what will be in the BioShock sequel ... what ideas we have.
