Rock Band receives new DLC, now with Offspring [update 2]

Update 2: The long lost Offspring DLC is now available for purchase off the XBLM. Celebratory "HUZZAH!" Original article viewable below.

Update:
According to the Harmonix crew, the Offspring tracks should be available, so it looks like it's an error on Microsoft's side. Still waiting for answers ...

It's Rock Band DLC Tuesday today, and that means all the new musical DLC that was announced last Friday releases today. Or so that's how it usually goes, today is the exception though, because the Offspring tracks have gone missing.

For whatever reason, only six of the promised nine Rock Band DLC tracks are available for purchase off the XBLM. The six tracks from bands including Against Me!, Free, George Thorogood, Harvey Danger, Screaming Trees and Static-X are all available, but the highly anticipated Offspring three pack is nowhere to be found. And we aren't exactly sure why they aren't available, because both Major Nelson and Harmonix are nowhere to be found. Let's just hope that there's a bug in the system and all nine tracks release later today, because denying us our Offspring is NOT a way to make friends.

RockBand.com updated, order custom merch

Earlier today, RockBand.com received a major website renovation that has added new functionality, new information and a much sleeker Rock Band presentation. RockBand.com (beta) is more feature-rich than ever, allowing gamers to browse and get information on every RB song, browse the improved forums, check out your stats, and create real-life custom merchandise including figures, tees and posters. Get learned about all the new RockBand.com features here and exercise patience, because the site is in beta and occasional hiccups are to be expected.

Rock Band 2 bug erases your band without mercy

The Rock Band 2 forums have been buzzing in anger for the past few weeks in regards to a game bug that erases your entire band.

Briefly, the bug seems to be affecting 360 copies of Rock Band 2 where the primary band member has a Live enabled account and another band member is rockin' out without any Live membership. Then, for no reason and usually further into the game, the bug glitches and deletes your entire band and all of its progress. Major, major bummer. Harmonix hasn't acknowledged or addressed the problem yet, so we have no clue when or if a patch will be released. For the time being, we recommend playing Band World Tour with all Live enabled or all non Live enabled accounts. Please, rock out carefully.

AC/DC pack will include unique achievements

When the AC/DC standalone expansion disc was announced for Rock Band 2 we silently wondered, since the pack is its own title will it have its own achievements? The answer is yes.

According to the Rock Band forums, one of the Harmonix developers has confirmed the AC/DC pack will include its own achievement list. HMXHenry wrote: "There will be unique Achievements and Trophies for the AC/DC Track Pack, as well as several that are song specific."

Now the question remains, will it add a gamerscore to Rock Band 2 during transfer or will the achievements only be available while playing from the AC/DC disc? We'll update you as more details are released.

Rumor: Crüe's "Dr. Feelgood" album lands as Rock Band DLC Oct. 14

According to a post on Imeem.com, Mötley Crüe's 1989 album Dr. Feelgood is being prepped as the latest album for Rock Band, set to release on October 14. No price for the album is listed but the standard $2 per track seems most likely if the information is accurate.

While the information seems plausible, we're waiting on confirmation from Harmonix before we throw confetti in celebration. Our sister site Joystiq has contacted the developer on the matter and we'll keep you informed of any updates.

Rock Band DLC: Offspring three pack and six others

Next week's Rock Band downloadable content was just announced by the Harmonix crew and, well, we're in for a treat!

On October 7th, there will be an Offspring three-pack released and it actually includes GOOD Offspring tracks like "Self Esteem", "Gone Away" and "Pretty Fly". The pack is 440 MS points or each song can be purchased individually for 160 points. On top of the Offspring DLC goodness are six other tracks from bands including George Thorogood ("Bad to the Bone" FTW!), Harvey Danger, Static-X, Free and more. Each will cost 160 MS points apiece. Check the complete listing of next week's Rock Band DLC below and be sure to support the Offspring.
  • "Gone Away" by Offspring
  • "Pretty Fly" by Offspring
  • "Self Esteem" by Offspring
  • "Stop!" by Against Me!
  • "All Right Now" by Free
  • "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood
  • "Cream & Bastards Rise" by Harvey Danger
  • "Nearly Lost You" by Screaming Trees
  • "Push It" by Static-X

Rock Band 2 bonus track registration is online

Free. Is there any word half as awesome in the English language? Harmonix agrees and is now accepting redemption codes for the twenty downloadable tracks that were included with the purchase of Rock Band 2 (the code is located on the back of your game manual). Once the registration information is filled out and you receive your confirmation email you get to play the game ... the waiting game that is.

Unfortunately this process is only a precursor to the tracks being made available which Harmonix promises will be "in a few weeks." When the tracks are available gamers will automatically receive an email that includes a unique code which is then used to grab the tracks from the Xbox Live Marketplace. The track list for the free content has yet to be released, however, the official Rock Band forums has a possible set list if you're eager to spot possibilities. Regardless of the track list, this could be the best "free thing" ever made available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. You know, unless you count those Nacho Libre gamerpics.

Rock Band's AC/DC package comes complete with fine print

Some of the fine print for Rock Band's upcoming AC/DC track package has been clarified thanks to a report by Variety. What we can now confirm is the 18 song pack will be a standalone product that can be played by itself or transferred to an Xbox 360 and act as downloadable content for Rock Band or Rock Band 2.

The standalone version will feature most, but not all, of the features found in both Rock Band titles. Players can play all four instruments (vocals, guitar, bass and drums), will not play as AC/DC themselves but as standard in game avatars because the product features no character customization. Players can participate in a tour style mode which plays through the entire set list, participate in tug-of-war and a score duels mode but the disc itself does not support online play.

In order to get online with the AC/DC tracks players must transfer the songs to their hard drive, as was required to play Rock Band songs in Rock Band 2 - which also opens up other restrictions such as character customization. Where things get hairy is that transferring the package can only be activated "once per disc," to prevent players from buying one copy and sharing the music with other machines.

The information was parsed from Paul DeGooyer, senior VP of electronic games and music at MTV who also stated the AC/DC tracks were only exclusive to Rock Band for "a term."

AC/DC Rock Band expansion exclusively releases to Walmart this holiday

Harmonix and MTV Games just made an announcement this morning regarding the release of a special edition of Rock Band. This "expansion" of sorts will be releasing this holiday EXCLUSIVELY at Walmart stores and it's called AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack. So, yes, the rumor was true.

This new AC/DC themed edition of Rock Band will include 18 AC/DC songs that were pulled from their "Live at Donington" DVD and will retail for $39 at, again, Walmart stores. The game will ship to North American retailers in November and to our friends in Europe and Australia in November.

Interesting too is the fact that this retail AC/DC Rock Band edition is being called a track pack yet the game's description reads it's a "fully-featured, standalone extension" of Rock Band and Rock Band 2. But the game also comes packaged with a keycode to download the songs straight to your HDD and import the 18 tracks into your current Rock Band setlist. Speaking of setlists, check out the 18 AC/DC tracks that'll be included in the AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack after the break. Oh, and uh ... hurray for Walmart?

Red Hot Chili Peppers DLC lights up Xbox Live

As players return to Xbox Live they'll be happy to know new DLC awaits them in Rock Band 2. Available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace is the entire album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Grab the downloadable package for 1,600MS Points or 160MS points per track today via the Marketplace and start rocking. Not familiar with Blood Sugar Sex Magik? RHCP fans will tell you the album, the bands fifth, is widely regarded as the release that put the group in the public eye. Just how popular is it? Blood Sugar Sex Magik has sold a reported 12 million copies worldwide since its release in 1991. Included in the track pack are:
  • "The Power of Equality"
  • "If You Have to Ask"
  • "Breaking the Girl"
  • "Funky Monks"
  • "Suck My Kiss"
  • "I Could Have Lied"
  • "Mellowship Slinky in B Major"
  • "The Righteous & The Wicked"
  • "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
  • "Under the Bridge"
  • "Naked in the Rain"
  • "Apache Rose Peacock"
  • "The Greeting Song"
  • "My Lovely Man"
  • "Sir Psycho Sexy"
  • "They're Red Hot"
Next up, Californication or bust!

Rock Band 1 tracks won't become DLC

For those of you who are just jumping into the Rock Band experience with the purchase of Rock Band 2, yet still want to jam to some of the original tracks on Rock Band 1, then you best purchase the disc.

Variety just confirmed with MTV Games that none of the Rock Band 1 setlist tracks will be released as purchasable hunks of DLC. Ever. So, your best bet would be to buy Rock Band used (or borrow it from a friend) and do the 400 MS point song export. Cheap and efficient!

X3F Defense Force needs your questions for Harmonix

If you only listen to one gaming podcast it should be the Xbox 360 Fancast. If you were going to listen to another we recommend the Big Download podcast. Have some extra time? The third best podcast on the internet is the Xbox 360 Fancast Friends Defense Force Podcast. Sure the name is ridiculously long but the podcast spawned out of the love of our own deserves your respect. They also need your help.

The X3FFDF (wow) team has a big interview with Sean Baptiste, manager of community development at Harmonix and need your questions for the momentous occasion. Have a question for the team behind Rock Band 2? Add your inquires to the comments of this post and the X3FFDF team will credit you during the episode. So, what do you want to ask Harmonix?!

Activision: Maybe music companies should pay us

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick is readying his guns in an attack against music companies citing they should be paying for the right to be included in titles such as Guitar Hero.

"When you look at the impact [Guitar Hero] can have on an Aerosmith, Van Halen or Metallica, it's really significant," Kotick told The Wall Street Journal. "You sort of question whether or not, in the case of those kinds of products, you should be paying any money at all and whether it should be the reverse."

The shots come soon after Warner Music head Edgar Bronfman called music royalties for rhythm games too low considering the games are "entirely dependent" on the content provided by music companies.

Kotick was quick to point out that gamers are purchasing games for enjoyment of the title and not necessarily for the music included.
"The bulk of our consumers will tell you they're not purchasing the products based on the songs that are included," he said. "They're purchasing based on how fun the songs are to play when they're playing them."

If Kotick and Bronfman continue this dance what do you think the chances we'll see each as bosses in the next Guitar Hero title?
