We don't think you need anymore reminding that HD DVD is getting its bum whooped lately. Heck, just take a look at our
HD DVD tag and you'll see a solid dozen stories reporting about its eventual downfall. So, we guess our general negative feelings and bummy attitude is warranted. We're depressed about this HD DVD stuff and depressed that our
This Week in HD DVD column may be coming to an untimely end. That's it then. No golden foil from us. Here are your HD DVD releases for this week. If anyone still cares.
- HD DVD Movie Releases: February 19th
- American Gangster
- Galaxina
- The Invasion

It was a good run HD. Well, maybe it wasn't. I can't wait until I'm 50 and I'm still hearing about this infamous "war".
Bring on the Blu.

You mean like Betamax and VHS? Personally, I was very young when that went on, but I think that format war was longer and a more fought battle. This HD DVD and Blu-ray "war" lasted what 2 years and 3 months? Besides, now Blu-ray has another obsticle to hurdle, DVD. You have to conivence people that a 30 Dollar HDMI Up-Converting DVD player is horrible, compared to a 200+ Blu-ray player. I always laugh at the Blu-ray video showing DVD compared to Blu-ray. (I own Both formats by the way) It's just funny when they show "A Knight's Tale", by spliting the screen and showing the difference. The DVD side is from a STANDARD DVD player, if the BDA showed an Up-Converted DVD they couldn't get the wow effect. So I love the product misleading. Show what DVD is fully capable of and what Blu-ray is. Then let the Consumer decide.

Well, in Europe:
Number of DVDs sold in year two (in a market dominated by VHS) = 2 million.
Number of Blu-rays sold in year two (in a market dominated by DVDs) = 2.3 million.
Oops. Facts trounce opinion seven days a week and twice on Sundays.

And Blu-ray's reign as the dominant format will be alot shorter than DVD's.
DVD will be good enough until a better non-optical disc option comes about.

In the case of "yeah, but".. is the CD format as dominant as it was in the 90s? I dare to say "no".
and what i was saying was.. whose to say that we'll keep using optical disks as a primary means of distribution?
I don't think the WGA went on strike b/c they were getting screwed with disc sales. it had to do with the digital delivery of the content.

How long before some early HD DVD adopter comes in saying he's going to "hang on to my 360 HD DVD add on until it becomes a valuble collectible". I have a Laserdisc machine I'd love to sell you!

"Yes, just like music downloads rendered CDs as obsolete."
Well 50% of music purchases are digital. That does hurt CD sales. If I can download a buy the only song I want for a dollar. Why do I want to buy a full CD of other songs I don't want. The only reason CDs are still around is because there are CDs which have 20 great songs on them. That is the only time that warrants a CD purchase.
You're argument makes no sense as well. Did DVD make VHS obsolete? No, VHS is still around and still sells. It's not about obsolete, its about sales. If Digital Distribution takes 40% to 50% of HD movie sales, that does hurt Blu-ray.

Yes. DVD did make VHS obsolete. Part of the definition for the word includes "no longer in general use" which I think is a pretty apt description of VHS which, like the horse and cart, is still in use but is also undeniably obsolete.
Bring on the HD-DVD fire sale, I'm happy with my £99.99 player and the 5 free HD-DVDs (Worth £75 minimum judging by current Play.com prices). No matter how dead HD-DVD might be the HD-DVDs I have and the ones I will buy in short order will still play for many years to come. Oh and I own a PS3 so the whole "war" was really only of minor interest to me.

Sorry that your column will have to be retired early. But since this is 360fanboy and not HDDVDfanboy there is plenty to get excited about with MS making some major gaming announcements this week. You do remember games right?? Let the Sony Droid Army play this Blu-ray format war business as they wait for their next exclusive in months. MS made an add-on, that's it, so it's Toshiba's loss not MS. Grab yourself a copy of Lost Odyssey and enjoy, it's a great RPG.
