We've heard plenty of insults hurled at our beloved consoles. Too pricey. Not enough games. Games are too pricey. Unreliable. How about this one: over-engineered. According to Yoichi Wada, chief executive of Square Enix, new-gen consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 aren't catering to the current video game market. So what does cater to the current market? Handhelds of course, which Wada sites as the reason for Square Enix's choice to bring Dragon Quest IX exclusively to the DS. Wada believes that new generation consoles are too complicated, stating, "There are too many specs – and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection and a deep knowledge of gaming – these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years they will fare better." He also adds that developing exclusives for the PS3 is a risky move for today's publishers. Our question: why hasn't anyone at Square Enix applied this logic to the Final Fantasy series?

Not me. The xbox 360 is my kind of machine. When I first bought it I didn't own a HDTV or have high speed internet. Now I have both.

I didn't have an HDTV or broadband until Halo 2 came out for the original Xbox. Now I have both, and a new HDTV for my 360, waiting for Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, and maybe GTA IV.
And I agree with the final question posed by the article, how does that make sense. They should really just release a statement saying that they are hypocrites. And then another one saying that they are not hypocrites.

Handhelds? Deep knowledge of gaming? WTF!?! For me it's Xbox LIVE and all you have to do is put the disc in and go play. If this jackhole can't figure that out, I want nothing to do with his crappy games. Yeah, crappy. I haven't seen a Square Enix game that I've wanted to play.

Yoichi Wada - go run with scissors.
About handhelds - I don't care about "over-engineered" or not. The PSP isn't comfortable in my hands, and thats a much bigger problem.
Square will never support Microsoft, and I hate them for that... (Because I love theyr games).

Oh, and I'm not a fan of handhelds. Why would I want to play on such small screens.

I'm not as concerned as I would have been ten years ago. Final Fantasy VII was the sole reason I bought a Playstation. There was a time when Square was, in my opinion, the king of game developers. Early-mid 90's, you had a couple great FF games on the SNES, Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story, etc...
Now we get a Final Fantasy game every three years, and that's about it. I loved FFXII, but Square just doesn't have the output to be a system-selling developer for me.

Ah.. Yeah.. PS3 & Xbox 360... That's too much power for me Sony & Microsoft, why don't you just do like Nintendo and re-package 2001 technology and sell it to me at a premium while making a crazy profit while you're at it?
I'm sorry, but if you're whinning about powerful machines and developing for them, then you should step aside and let others companies take advantage of these machines.
What a load of crap!!!

Say what you will folks, but the DS is outselling everything else.. incredibly. Especially in Japan, where it's practically owned by everything. I expect dogs to be playing that by now.
Anyways, I think the biggest problems with the big consoles right now is they aren't priced within general reason.
$400 is too much. Way too much, and most people have gotten it through their heads by now that the $300 model is a ripoff.
and let's not even go into the PS3's price! Sheesh!
360 sales are stagnant at the moment because of price, and the lack of variety.
Wii sales are only as good as they are right now, because it's cheap. Very cheap.
PS3 sales.. well, you know why.

Comments like this from developers are ridiculous. But then, so is the whole "console-war" thing.
Different consumers look for different things. A LOT of people obviously just want lower prices, but some of us prefer better technology and a console with a lifespan of more than a year or two (and these things, nicely, go hand in hand).
People can bicker about what's smarter all they want, but in the end, it is better for US, the consumers, if we have choices. If the ONLY gaming platforms available were the DS and Wii...it would suck.

over-engineered?That would make it a good thing. It would take longer for these systems to reach their full potential and there would be a much longer console life span.

I bought my HDTV specifically for my xbox 360.
Decent 32" HDTV's can be had for $500, now. People that can afford $60 games can afford $500 HDTVs.
The people buying games aren't children. Gaming is for adults, now. It's seems strange, but it's really not unexpected. This is the only direction gaming can go, to keep the industry growing. I wonder when we'll see the first game with a fifty million dollar budget.
"Next-Gen" (aka "now-gen") is the new Hollywood; It started in black and white, moved on to sound, moved on to color, and the next step is to become interactive.
I can't wait to see interactive television.

Too complicated? I say Square are a bunch of dumb asses and that explains Y they develope majority of FF games exclusivly for sony. I'll say this, people are starting to care less and less about FF so the better mass market it b4 they loose thier major bread winner and become a sub division of a company like EA. ANd to clear that up....Ea and Square are partners in certain ventures, EA dose not already own them....yet.

Many years ago I would have told you that i wouldn't own a system unless it had FF on it. Now I don't care, FF has become irrelevant to me. Each FF is worse than the last. I think Square should capitalize on it's past, and remake all the old FF games for the next gen, on all three cosoles. Of course they would have to seriously revamp the graphics to next gen standards, and if they did that I would gladly buy them again.

Banks, are you serious? FF 10 was so much better than 8 and nine were. And have you played 12 yet? Granted 11 didn't excite me too much, but this series is still amazing! Don't miss out. I'm holding on to the little hope there is of them putting 13 on the 360 so I don't have to buy a PS3.

I liked 10 but U are crazy if U think it is better than 8. Also PS3 can go to hell. I'll never buy 1 for anything less than 50 bucks when they go on clearence and even then it will serve only display purposes, a trophy if U will.
