CompUSA is selling 360 Platinum Packages for $349.99 after $50 mail-in rebate, plus free shipping, until September 16. This offer is online only. They're also having a fire sale on the older games. Can anybody who know tell me the percentage of people who actually mail in the rebates from these big box stores because I don't think I've ever remembered to send one in?
[Thanks Muppet]

I have mailed them in before. When I was building my PC I has a bunch of mail-ins, from the same mail-in rebate company. It was worth it. I think it would be worth it for $50 too.

I've mailed them in too. But there's a reason they make it a mail-in rebate and not an in-store rebate, because people DO forget to mail it in, and it's a pretty large percentage too. I wish I could find the study I read showing exactly how many people don't send the things in, or send them in and then forget about them, so when it doesn't show up they don't bother following up.

I think they count on a percentage of people NOT sending them in. It's the easiest way to make people think they're getting a bargain (and increase sales) when in fact they'll probably end up paying the full amount anyway!

...Or you could have just price-matched them to BrandsmartUSA when they were selling them for $348.88 out the door last week (assuming you live anywhere near one of the 7 or so locations). Then done the 110% price-match policy from Circuit City.
Final price: $343.76

Of course I mail them in. Wrote one up last night. Office Depot was offering a 100GB hard drive (which was really a 120GB drive because of the unexpected 'bonus' 20GB) for $90 plus a $70 rebate.
Not bad but I also had a coupon from my last purchase for $10 off the next time I spent over $50 there. So, including sales tax, the 120GB drive will come out to about $17.
It means I'm essentially loaning them $70 for a couple of months but I can manage that for a really low priced drive just when I had the need.
It's a hassle but the rebates work fine if you stay on top of them. I keep a running file on my PC to remind me of which ones haven't arrived but these days the email notifications are pretty good. At any given time I have about $200 tied up in rebates but such is the non-monetary cost of getting things on the cheap.

CompUSA has been horrible in the past with fullfilling rebates. Twice I never got my rebate check.

It's odd that no big electronics store in the UK to my knowledge does these mail in rebate things, we just get money off :/.

Regarding the rebate...
At most store like this, the pull-though percentage for people sending in their rebates is 60% whether online or in-store.
However on an item like the 360 which attracts younger buyers, it often drops to around 50%.

Simple, As soon as you get home fill it out, make a copy and drop it in the mail. Do all of this except mailing possibly BEFORE you start using the 360. Head over to google calendar or Outlook or whatever your calendaring app is and enter a appt of 6-8 weeks out with the amount, retailer and status checking website or phone number.

Keep copies of everything you send in. If you don’t get a response or they decline it take the copy into your local CompUSA and they will give you the rebate there at least in Michigan I know they would and it should be the same at a CC or BB. Of course you have to wait the 8-10 weeks before you go in there with proper documentation. If they give you crap start talking about contacting your district attorney and better business bureau that always seemed to scare the front end people at the store I worked at. As long as you fill out everything right and get things out on the correct dates and you don’t get your rebate just march right on in there and get your money.

This offer is most definitely not "online only" as I just bought my 360 in store and was given the rebate form. Just check the rebate link to make sure your nearest brick and mortar store isn't excluded.
In other news, I GOT A 360!
