Built-in HDD 'prematurely' killed off the original Xbox

"The hard drive in every Xbox killed us" admitted Peter Moore who, in an interview with guardian, mentioned that it and the cost associated with the drives was one of the main reasons Microsoft chose to move away from the original Xbox so quickly.

The Xbox's built-in HDD was "why we prematurely left the original" Moore admitted, "we were still selling it [the console] at $199 and the hard drive was like $70 ... it was killing us, and there was no way to bring the price down. So in the end we determined at around the 25 million unit mark that we just needed to slow this thing down and just not sell any more, and move to the 360 as quickly as we possibly could." Intriguing. Maybe now with the 360's not so mandatory HDD, we'll see a console life cycle that'll last beyond five years. Maybe?

Ultimate Xbox punishment

A user on CNN's iReport blog shared an image that could send shivers down your spine. When their two children wouldn't behave while playing the original Xbox, the husband of iReport user Kingfry of Mechanicsville, Virginia, punished the pair by nailing the system to a tree in the backyard. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox was still functional -- that thing was a beast. Well if that is the case, and since that tree seems fairly tall, may we suggest a wireless internet adapter?

Rumor: A Microsoft firing and a first party title canceled

According to EGM's Shane Bettenhausen in the latest 1UP Yours podcast, there's going to be some bad news coming from the Microsoft camp this week.

Talking on his podcast, Shane says he has insider info on an unconfirmed rumor that "a big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time that people are very excited for, sounds like it's being canceled. And a Microsoft executive who's pretty high up, who's been a voice for the company, sounds like he's on the way out". Shane says that he believes the news to be 97% true and has an inkling that Microsoft will be making the announcements sometime this week.

So, if the rumor is true, what game and which Microsoft exec will be getting the boot? We figured the obvious target to be Rare's "where the heck have you gone, we haven't heard from you for a long, long while" Banjo-Kazooie 3, but today Rare confirmed that the game is still in development. So, no dice there. Rumor? Truth? Who knows, but feel free to speculate all you want ... now.

It's so cute, it's a mini Xbox

Completing one of the coolest case mods we've seen in a long while, ghostavel over at the Xbox-Scene forums showcased his latest project ... the Xbox Mini. As you can see in the picture above, the Xbox Mini is a super condensed form of the original Xbox designed after Apple's Mac Mini and features a built-in wireless adapter and beefier 80GB hard drive. You can check out more pictures of the Xbox Mini after the break and you'll see that this mini console is one beauty all right. It's so darn pretty that we get all misty eyed looking at it.

Xbox.com gets a facelift and some Botox

Earlier this morning Xbox.com received a cosmetic update designed to make navigation around the site easier. Yes, it's much more gray colored and curvy, but what you'll also notice is that all the "My Xbox" activities are placed in a handy drop-down menu as well as all the other expandable options on the site. Transparent drop-down boxes are delicious! They also integrated Live search into the site for (hopefully) smarter searching. Point your browser over to Xbox.com to see all the pretty new visual enhancements and see if you can find compatibility issues with your browser of choice. Now that sounds like real entertainment.

Xbox 360's failure rate at 30%?

The Xbox 360's biggest source of negative press revolves around one glaring issue ... its perceived failure rate. And the media keeps churning out the bitterness.

After writing an article on the Xbox 360's potential problems, tech site Smarthouse started receiving emails from customers who've had bricked 360 experiences. And after receiving more than 100 horror story emails and getting info from an Aussie EB Games manager, they're estimating that the Xbox 360's failure rate is somewhere around 30%. Though, this magical 30% failure rate number is coming from one EB Games manager, which Smarthouse feels can be justified since they've received numerous broken 360 emails. So, take such mathematical analysis for what it's worth.

We can't emphasize enough that the hardware failure issue is one of the only problems that has tainted the 360's image. Yet our friends over in Redmond refuse to address the problem specifically. Our experiences at X3F have been mixed as I'm on my third 360 and both David and Richard are still cooking along on their original consoles. What about you, how many 360s have you gone through?

Microsoft contemplates a 360 price cut

In an interview with Bloomberg, Peter Moore and others discuss the Xbox 360 demographic, how they want to target moms and their kids, and hint at a possible 360 price cut. "If we don't make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1" Moore says, and what better way to move more consoles than with a price cut. Director of Xbox product management David Hufford reinforces this thinking by stating that "we (Microsoft) are well aware that the sweet spot of the market is really 199 bucks" and that "when mom walks into the store and sees she can get a console with a game for $250, she sees it as a $300 value". It really sounds like Microsoft gets it.

But will we be seeing a Xbox 360 price drop this year or just a game bundle? We can't be sure, but we know Microsoft is cut throat about gaining ground in the console wars this generation and a price drop would help significantly. They just have to make sure their pocketbooks can handle more losses, but we're sure Bill would be willing to co-sign.

Microsoft considered new Xbox every two years

In a guest essay over on The Mercury News, original Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus revealed that early on Microsoft kicked around the idea of releasing a new Xbox every two years. Bachus goes on to say that,

"our very first thoughts on Xbox included the somewhat misguided notion that we might upgrade the system every TWO years. Now wouldn't that have been disruptive!"

Disruptive indeed, thank god they scrapped such a horrible idea. In his guest essay Bachus also went on to describe the early days of the Xbox, how they brought developers on board, and what the big black Xbox's legacy ended up being. It's an insightful read into how the Xbox got off the ground and what the team's goals were going forward. Read Kevin Bachus' full essay after the jump.

Seriously, if you don't become the most hated scum of Xbox Live after reading this guide, then we're sorry to say that you're a lost cause doomed to being a respectable Xbox Live gamer for the rest of your life. Snoop wants his Xbox and he wants it now!

The New York Post is reporting that Snoop Dogg, during a UNICEF benefit concert, almost didn't make it on stage due to an Xbox. As part of Snoop Dogg's long list of demands for his appearance, he required that there be an Xbox in his dressing room. But when no Xbox was to be found, Snoop nearly canceled his concert. That is until a parent lent the rapper their kid's Xbox so he could get his game on with his massive entourage. In the end Snoop was only an hour or so late (gaming way too hard), but did give his performance. Is our pot smoking "friend" Snoop Dogg a diva in disguise or is it perfectly justifiable for a gamer to demand an Xbox? We can definitely understand the necessity of it, but then again we aren't getting paid $150,000 to show up somewhere.

It's a mini paper Xbox 360 with a HD DVD drive

Over at Paper Art Gadgets Junyang posted a sexy miniature paper model of an Xbox 360 with HD DVD drive. Junyang creates 3D paper models of various electronics, completing each from the design process through folding the creation with his own hands. The Xbox 360 paper model comes complete with a Premium box and a DVD tray that pops out. He also created the HD DVD player add-on which measures only 1.5" long and also features a disc tray. And for those of you who want to create a paper 360 for your own, you'll have to be semi-resourceful, because Paper Art Gadgets doesn't supply all their print outs or instructions. But you may be able to create something with this.

Two mini Xbox 360 masterpieces made out of paper. We're so in love. Though, we'd like to see a paper power brick included, so we could fire this bad boy up. Paper power brick ... that's just funny.

Recap: Xbox 360 crashes PS3 launch fun

Microsoft had one goal in mind for the European Playstation 3 launch ... be annoying. The Xbox marketing team did everything in their power to humiliate, taunt, and make fun of Sony's launch, all with a smile and a devilish whit. We mentioned France's love boat and the Foster's beer delivery, but there were a few more incidents we didn't acknowledge.

  • During the PS3 launch in France, the Xbox team sent out text messages to anyone who'd accept them wishing everyone great night.
  • More beer was delivered.
  • If you were a waiting in line for a PS3 in the UK, the Xbox team handed out chairs to sit on with a URL on the back. The website, toolate, taunts the PS3 by saying "Xbox welcomes PS3 to the next generation. Sony ... you're late! Let the games begin."
  • There were also reports that Microsoft employees were standing on nearby rooftops blowing whistles to drown out Sony's press conference talk.
Whether you find these acts hilarious, creative, immature, or evil there's no doubt Microsoft stirred up some negative PR for Sony's European launch. This is the time when we ask ... can't we all just get along?
