Gears of War movie may go the green screen route

Speaking to GamePro, Gears of War screenwriter Stuart Beattie discussed the upcoming film adaptation of the blockbuster game. Apart from talking about the slowly changing Hollywood view of game-to-film adaptations -- as the writer of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film (a movie based on a ride), he knows something about adaptations -- Beattie elaborates on how Gears of War may be treated in production. Beattie says that Gears of War will likely utilize the same techniques used in 300, which was shot entirely using a green screen. Said Beattie, "There's no way to build that world any other way, really," noting that a green screen and soundstage is the only way the movie could be made on a reasonable budget. So, when you sit down to enjoy the upcoming film, remember that the Brumak about to eat Marcus isn't real.

This week's Video Marketplace offerings

The (United States exclusive) Xbox Live Video Marketplace is flourishing with stacks and stacks of movies being released each week. And, as expected, this week didn't let us down with over twenty new movies and a handful of TV shows added to the list. Big exciting HD movies like Letters From Iwo Jima, Good German, and Undead. Okay, we haven't heard of all the exciting new movies, but they're in HD so we love 'em all the same. Complete list of new Video Marketplace content is posted after the break including TV offerings. Now only if we could find some extra Microsoft points laying around so we could rent Dr. T and the Woman to see what that's all about.

New XBLM TV and movie content, oh my!

Fresh off the presses is a list of new TV and movie content headed to the XBLM this week including a free download. First, let's talk about the free goods. The Colbert Report's very own animated series Tek Jansen Adventures will make an appearance on the Marketplace with the first episode being offered for free. Side note, be sure to badger both Microsoft and Comedy Central about putting The Colbert Report episodes on the XBLM. It's hilarious, is one of the best shows ever, and needs to be available. End side note. Other TV content available this week is new programming from Total Video and Blade TV, and a new season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Gamehead too. For movies we've only got a few releases including Tenacious D & The Pick of Destiny and Beer League. Yup, that should keep you busy for at least fifteen minutes ... now start downloading!

[Thanks, zizzy]

This week's movie offerings are nothing to whine about either, with award winning The Departed being downloadable in HD, Snakes on a Plane, and a little Friday the 13th happiness. Click your way towards the break for a full list of content, as we're sure you'll find something to spend your Microsoft Points on.

Fetch new movies, shows, and music off the XBLM

Major Nelson just posted a list of what content will be coming to the XBLM this week. It looks like we've only got one movie (Hunt for Red October), but a few good television shows. They are even giving us an episode of Pros v. Joes and The Sarah Silverman Program for FREE, but only for limited time. And there's a new Artist of the Month, erm ... this month. Compose yourself and give it up for this month's Artist of the Month Good Charlotte (thunderous applause)! We just love teenage angst music ... it makes us feel good about ourselves. Check out the complete list of new XBLM content after the break.

2007 sees Kameo on the big screen?

Kameo was a mixed bag, even for a launch title. The game was beautiful, it played reasonably well, but there was just something missing. The characters lacked spark and the world was perhaps a little too saccharine. Still, it was a decent first effort and it was sure as hell a sight better than Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Rare's first Microsoft effort. It looks like the lukewarm reception was enough for Microsoft, as a Kameo movie appears to be in the works, according to IMDB. The director listed is Sunmin Park, who most recently had a hand in the anime feature, Sky Blue. We haven't watched the film, but Siliconera reports that it was a beautiful, though somewhat empty experience.

Wait a minute, beautiful but empty? It's almost a perfect match! The only other bit of knowledge we have is that the film is slated for 2007. Anyone think Kameo is worth the ever increasing price of a movie ticket?

Haven't downloaded TV or movies off of the XBLM

Since the release of downloadable TV and movie content on the XBLM I have yet to download a single episode or movie. I'm not really certain why I haven't taken part in the download service, because it is quite easy. Though, it's probably because I'm not a huge home movie watching kind of guy and I'm not uber obsessed with current TV shows (although South Park does roxorz). The pricing structure isn't bad at all, I can't complain, especially if one only would want a certain episode instead of an entire boxed DVD season. But, I think the main reason I don't purchase content is because it's not as much of an impulse buy as shopping in the mall is. I actually have to purchase Microsoft Points, navigate to the content I want, and wait for it to download. Anyone out there a regular XBLM movie or TV show downloading whore? If so ... we'd like to hear your story.

Indiana Jones Das Spiel

This German language Indiana Jones GC 06 trailer (showcasing ILM's "Euphoria" physics) is so charmingly retro it makes me want to spend 7 years shooting a shot for shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark in my backyard. Oh right, some kid already did that.

Xbox Movie Showcase launches

Microsoft and Paramount Pictures have struck a marketing deal that will bring Paramount movie trailers like Mission Impossible 3 and Nacho Libre to Xbox Live starting April 12, not to mention  the opportunity to sqare off against Tenacious D:

The Xbox Movie Showcase content includes HD movie trailers, exclusive theme packs, and graphics allowing Xbox gamers to customize their gaming experiences, theming their Xbox Live experience to "M:i:III" and "Nacho Libre." In addition, as part of this first-of-its kind agreement, stars of Paramount films, including Jack Black, will participate in Xbox's "Game with Fame," where gamers can enter for a chance to play a game online against their favorite celebrities. Taking the program off-line, Paramount's DVDs will be featured in a Digital Entertainment Lifestyle video promoted across Xbox kiosks in 30,000 retail stores worldwide.

Real movie stars on XBL, eh? Is there any chance Scientology-crazed A-lister Tom Cruise will stop jumping on the couch long enough to pick up a wireless controller?  I'd like to know what L. Ron Tom and his silent birth bizarro bride thought about the Epsilon Program in GTA: San Andreas.

Stay Away

The trailer for Hollywood's latest video game-related cinematic crap-fest (disco-lisciously entitled Stay Alive) has hit Xbox Live Marketplace with the sickening thud of a dozen flailing show biz careers. The only thing unique about this entry in the Michael Myers meets Mario category is that it doesn't star a former pro-wrestler or bear the cursed mark of Uwe Boll. It does have Frankie Muniz of Malcom in Middle fame playing a character named "Swink."

Of course, the reviews are uniformly bad, despite the pathetic marketing plants sprinkled at IMDB. Send a message to the suits and stay away from Stay Alive, if only to ward off the direct-to-video sequel.

With two Resident Evils and now Silent Hill coming up in April, I think tinsel town has mined the survival horror genre for all it's worth. Then there's the console "comedy" Grandma's Boy that disappeared from theaters in two seconds. If we're ever going to see the perfect marrige of video game and film, the creative cousins might have to switch things up. Does Brokeback Halo sound like Oscar material?
