Oblivion GotY edition announced

Today, Bethesda announced that this September they'll be releasing a new compilation of our beloved Oblivion ever so lengthily named The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition. The GotY edition doesn't have a price-tag attached to it yet, but we do know that it will include all the previously released downloadable content including Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. And, we hope, it'll include the horse armor too.

So, this GotY edition surely won't woo Oblivion fans who've already purchased all the DLC content, but for those who have yet to experience all the RPG fun, this September looks to be the time to jump in.

Shivering Isles patch coming Monday

Shivering Isles' form ID bug of a problem that we wrote about a while ago is going to be fixed next week with a patch coming Monday. Bethesda's community manager hopped on the official forums to announce the Shivering Isles patch, but acknowledged that Monday is only a target date and the release could get pushed back. So, even though most of you weren't having a problem with this little bug, it was there, Bethesda squashed it, and all is calm in the world.

Oblivion's new achievements from Shivering Isles posted the achievements to Oblivion's newly hatched first born Shivering Isles. And if you're keen to remember, Oblivion will be the first game to go over the 1000 Gamerscore limit with its Shivering Isles expansion adding an additional 250 Gamerscore points (per Microsoft's new Gamerscore rules). The sad part of all this expansion happiness is that the achievements are rather ... how do we say this ... dull. They lack that creative flair, that personality, and RPG originality. Bethesda must have used up their creativity reserves on the actual game, because they included a rather lame achievement which guarantees a 20 Gamerscore boost just for purchasing the expansion called the "Tourist" achievement. Oh well, a huge expansion offering an additional 250 Gamerscore points ... who could possibly complain?

Shivering Isles to be released at retail

In a recent interview with Gamertag Radio, design director of Oblivion Shivering Isles Bruce Nesmith let out some interesting details. When asked how Oblivion fans who don't have Xbox Live could get the Shivering Isles expansion pack, Nesmith admitted that they were working on a retail version. According to Nesmith, there will be a new special edition of Oblivion available at retail that will include all of the previously released content including the new Shivering Isles expansion. He also went on to say that there will be more downloadable content for Oblivion in the near future. So, does this sway your decision to download Shivering Isles by just selling your current copy of Oblivion and purchasing the new special edition when it releases? Or are you happy with downloading the expansion and having it stored on your hard drive?

Rumored price and download size for Shivering Isles

Next month the Shivering Isles expansion pack for Oblivion will be available, but we have yet to hear any specifics. is reporting that the Shivering Isles expansion pack will only be available for the Xbox 360 via the XBLM, cost around $29.99, and weigh in at a beefy 1.5 gigabytes. Again, this isn't official information coming from Bethesda and should be treated as a rumor. doesn't site any sources or where they received the information and simply treats these tidbits as fact ... but we'll err on the side of caution. So guys, were you expecting the $30 price tag for the expansion and would you be willing to shell out that kind of cash for 30 plus hours of additional gameplay?

First Oblivion expansion: Shivering Isles

PCZone has the latest info on the first expansion for Oblivion, entitled Shivering Isles. Those of you who have purchased mountains of downloadable content may be confused. So far, the downloadable quests have been just that: quests. Shivering Isles represents the first true expansion, offering a new realm, new monsters, and over 30 hours of extra gameplay.

Shivering Isles takes place in (you guessed it) the Shivering Isles, a desolate (and apparently cold) land ruled by the god of dementia, Sheogorath (does dementia really need its own god?). Players must ultimately overcome Sheogorath and take control of the isles. An interesting note, the isles apparently take on visible changes based on the actions taken by the character. While it has not been officially announced for the 360, we can only assume the content will be made available when the PC expansion arrives (tentatively in Q2 2007). In the meantime, somebody get those isles a blanket!

Get your vote on, Gamespot's game of the year

It's the end of one long gaming year and that could only mean one thing, Gamespot has just announced its nominees for 2006 Game of the Year. Among the ten nominees there are quite a few great 360 games on the list including Dead Rising, Oblivion, Rainbow Six Vegas, Viva Piñata, and our little engine that could Gears of War. It's nice to see that so many high profile games from the 360 made the list and that Oblivion may have some of its stiffest competition yet. Visit their site, vote for who you think deserves the crown, and wait patiently for the winner to be announced. It's a difficult decision so we're totally opting for a write-in and voting for Viva Gears Rising ... that's one great game.

USA Today: Gaming's best and worst of 2006

USA Today published their critique of the best and worst 2006 had to offer in the video game industry. Not that these kinds of articles aren't a dime a dozen now a days, but it's an interesting read no matter. A few interesting highlights would be awards for Best First-Person Shooter going to Gears of War (shouldn't that be best second person shooter?), Best Game going to Oblivion, and the Playstation 3 taking home the Worst Console Launch of 2006 award (stiff competition). We're also intrigued by the Worst Industry Trend award going to micro-payments, which I'm sure most people would agree with. Although, micro-payments aren't that big of a deal as long as they are of value and aren't overpriced ... damn horse.

PS3 Oblivion content will hit 360 too

Some of you may have heard that the PS3 is getting its very own version of Oblivion, the 360's premiere RPG. Having heard this, you may also have heard that the PS3 would be seeing some content that isn't available for the 360 version. Upon hearing this, you may have been somewhat, shall we say, bummed. Fear not, bummed out Oblivionites, for Bethesda has spoken and the news is good. When IGN asked if the PS3 content -- titled Knights of the Nine -- would be available for PC and 360, Bethesda's Todd Howard replied, "We always aim to have all our content available across all platforms, so that is our goal." So there you have it, folks. Expect to see Knights of the Nine available sometime in the not too distant future.

And since we can't resist kicking a little fanboy sand every once in a while, we'd like to point out that Bethesda is still in the dark concerning downloadable content on the PS3. Gotta love that Xbox Live.
