MLB Stickball hits XBLA this week

Well this one came right out of left field. After two weeks of big name games hitting Xbox Live Arcade, we are greeted this Wednesday with MLB Stickball from 2K Sports. We know next to nothing about the title, though a pair of screenshots reveal what looks like stickball featuring super-deformed versions of familiar players from Major League Baseball. Gamescore Blog also notes that players can unlock baseball cards and earn extra points for hitting certain objects. So, breaking a window will earn points then? Count us in.

MLB Stickball will be available this Wednesday for 800 Microsoft Points.

MLB Stickball headed to XBLA, stick not included

2K Sports just announced that they'll be testing the Xbox Live Arcade waters with their first ever Arcade release, MLB Stickball. Yes sir, it's baseball, with a stick, hitting balls.

According to the 2K folks, MLB Stickball will release to the XBLA on Wednesday, October 8th where players will be able to collect Topps cards, build teams, create custom rules and play ... well, stickball. Pretty easy enough explanation, just don't break a window when swinging, because that's considered an insta-out. Bummer too ... we're usually pretty good at breaking our neighbor's windows.

Experience love with the Top Spin 3 demo

As Major Nelson pointed out, that just in time for Wimbledon there's a new Top Spin 3 demo available for download off the Xbox Live Marketplace. Accessible to all Xbox Live regions, this rather light 394MB Top Spin 3 demo should improve your back-swing, your forehand and possibly your serving skills. Of course, not in the physical world, we're talking about improved tennis skills in the digital Top Spin world. Go download and experience love.

Prize Fighter demo punches XBLM

Demos are sort of a mixed blessing. Every morning, we fire up the old Xbox, quickly put out the fire, and then browse the Marketplace hoping to find something special. A good video is nice, but a demo is even better ... usually. You see, today's demo is Don King Presents: Prizefighter. A few months ago, sure, we might have looked at the Prizefighter demo with some sense of excitement. Now, after some especially tepid reviews, we can barely muster even detached interest. Still, it's not like you have any other choice if you're looking for a new boxing game. At the very least, it could save you from making a costly mistake, right?

Rick Nash covering NHL 2K9

Two key announcements have been made for fans of 2K Sports' NHL franchise. First, and more importantly of course, Rick Nash has been tapped as the cover athlete of NHL 2K9. This coming from a memorable season for the Columbus Blue Jackets where they, you know didn't make the playoffs. But that's besides the point!

The second, and way less important, is developer Visual Concepts is "taking over" the development reigns of the game instead of working with Kush Games and promises to rebuild the game from the ground up. Surprising changes would be made due to the fact that 2K8 was one of the second best hockey game available according to Metacritic.

Some things you may want to consider about this post. One, Rick Nash? Really? Two, building the title from the ground up? Thank goodness. Three, there were only two hockey games last year.

Oh, sorry to any Nash or Blue Jackets fans. I'm a Leafs fan, so what do I know?

MLB 2K8 spends Opening Day Weeked on XBL

In preparation for a baseball season that seems to span eleven of the twelve calendar months, Major League Baseball 2K8 is holding a bunch of Xbox Live festivities as part of their MLB 2K8 Opening Day Weekend.

Scheduled to bat-off (eh?) on April 4th and run through April 6th, baseball fans and not-so baseball fans will be able to register for a Play & Win (where oodles of Microsoft points can be won), download the already available MLB 2K8 demo and have a chance to play with the game's creators during the April 4th Game With Developers. All the funnery kicks off next Friday, so file those cleats to mini-daggers and add some cork to your bat ... MLB 2K8 Opening Day Weekend is near.

MLB 2K8 strikes out, patch in the works

After playing inning upon inning of MLB 2K8 you've come to realize things just aren't up to snuff. You can't put your finger on it, but you know there's something just off. Well friend, you are spot on correct, because 2K has formally announced that they are working on a patch for MLB 2K8 to fix some of the game's "issues". Issues including frame-rate problems and bugs that pop up while playing as the San Diego Padres in franchise mode. No word to when the update will roll out, but hopefully it'll be released before the baseball season comes to an end.

Free MLB 2K8 downloads are a home run

Major League Baseball 2K8 has been on retail shelves for all of a few days and already 2K Sports has released downloadable content to the XBLM. Usually we'd be angry when a developer releases new DLC the same week the game comes out, because A) it should have been included on the disc and B) we know they simply want to make a few bucks off the held back content. But, in this case, it's actually a good thing because the MLB 2K8 content is free. W00t, w00t! So, if you picked up you copy of MLB 2K8 this week and live in the U.S. or Canada, head to the XBLM and get your three free MLB 2K8 DLC downloads including the 2K8 Minor League Stadium Pack, Majestic Cool Base Uniforms and the Card Series 2 roster update. Free downloads FTW!

KonsoleKingz present NBA 2K8 High Risers tourney

Hip-hop and Xbox 360 gaming culture website, KonsoleKingz have teamed up with 2K Sports to bring gamers the NBA 2K8 High Risers Tournament. The two-event tourney is broken into a traditional qualifying team vs. team elimination style where one of the 225 entrants will walk way with a Halo 3 Zune, the second event pits the top 16 players from the qualifying round against each other for a brand new LCD HDTV.

For more details on the NBA 2K8 High Risers tournament visit the KonsoleKingz, where, unlike here, they have more than one writer that talks about sports games!

MLB 2K8 is going, going, going, gone gold!

Taking over the sports news duties away from Xav for the day, we thought we'd mention that 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K8 has officially gone gold and is being pressed to disc at this very moment. That means that your MLB gaming fun is but only a few days away, so be sure to head to your local drug store and stock up on "supplements" before the season begins. Big and strong kids, you have to be big and strong to play this game.

2K Sports gives up on College Hoops series

In a surprising turn of events, 2K Sports has confirmed that they've stopped development on College Hoops 2K9, which was originally scheduled for a November release. Why the sudden cancellation? According to 2K, they couldn't negotiate a fitting deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company (licensee of over 200 college trademarks) and say that they would have loved to create College Hoops, "but given our disciplined approach to the business, we do not believe the current discussions would result in an acceptable outcome". The rabbit hole gets deeper as rumors are swirling that the CLC's relationship with EA (and their NCAA March Madness franchise) has caused them to act unfairly in negotiations with 2K. In other words, the CLC could be cheating on 2K! Gasp! Whatever the reason, we know that there will be no College Hoops 2K9, so everyone will have to settle for March Madness. So much drama ...
