My only grip with pre-order at Gamestop is that you know Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, or Toys R Us will offer 10 bucks off or a $10 gift card. Even if not, they'll have enough copies of the game in stock on day one.

So in order to "try" the game I need to first "buy" the game. Makes perfect sense.

A curious situation indeed...

This may be the first time that a pre-order causes increased interest in a demo, and not the other way around.
Tip to Valve: if the game is good, the sooner the demo gets out to everyone, the better the buzz, the more games sold.

I agree with everyone above. This sounds stupid. I'm not preordering a game to see the demo. See, the way it works is that you give me the demo and I see if I want to buy the game?
What's next? If you want to read any E3 show news you have to preorder a game. Couldn't possibly want anyone to know if the game is good before they buy it.

Next step is you have to pre-order the game, then they tell you which game you actually pre-ordered. It's like playing Game Stop Roulette.

You can always just cancel your pre-order if you don't like the demo.

But if you try to do that at Gamestop then you will need to listen to the whiny kid who works there about how its such a bad idea to cancel your pre order. Trust me, I did it once and I would rather stab my self in the eye with a rusty butter knife then do that again.

Playing a demo is a not a reward, it's sales opportunity. A company that treats a demo like it's a promotional gift isn't thinking right.
I'm not going to jump through hoops to try the game to figure out if I want to buy it. They might want to keep in mind that there's a LOT of game coming out in November, so the sooner people get to try it, the better off they will be.

@Mr. Nosuch,
You hit the nail on the head.

Pre ordering a game is "jumping through hoops"?
This isn't the only way to play the demo, it's still going to be available to whoever wants it. It's just that people that pre order(@ Gamestop) get to play it first. Most of those people aren't going to change their mind based on the demo anyway. They've already decided to buy it.

Actually I did this today and after I put in my serial number for my pre-order it said this:
Thank You!
Early access to the demo will run from October 31st through November 7th.
Codes will begin being sent out on October 30th
So it gave us two different dates. Hopefully it comes out October 30th. The sooner the better.
And stop complaining everybody. This is only if you want it EARLY, which if there was a way to get the Halo Wars demo before the public, nobody would be bitching. It is getting a demo a week or two before it goes on the marketplace, which if it were any other game you guys would be blowing your loads over it. It's no worse then buying a full priced game(Crackdown) just to get into the Halo 3 beta. Actually it is a lot better. Dish out $5 to get early access to a demo compared to paying $60 to play in a beta of a rather crappy and redundant game. And I wasn't referring to Crackdown this time.
