For the month of August, again Nintendo reigned supreme in both the handheld and console markets, selling 518,300 DS' and 453,000 Wiis. The battle for second place in the console market was heated, but like we said, Microsoft was able to sell 195,200 Xbox 360 consoles narrowly passing the PS3's 185,400 unites. Also, keep in mind that the 360's recent price cuts and their effect on sales are not part of August's NPD tabulations seeing the the cuts went to effect in September. And, quickly, looking at the software side of things, Madden 09 sold crazy well on all platforms and both Too Human and SoulCalibur IV made the top ten. Complete August NPD hardware and software sales after the break.

Ouch! Tonnes of people would of been holding back on the 360s price cut and MS even mentioned a 100% increase in sales since - so ps3 is going to be light years behind in September's console sales.

Yeah, I imagine that a lot of people were waiting in August and will now pick one up since the price drop.
Is NPD global or NA only?

US only (the Xbox strongest region). That's why NPD is not really that representitive of what is happening elsewhere (360 is getting slaughtered by Wii and PS3 in sales).

Looks like UK retailer is clearing down it's stocks of 360, in preparation of dumping it..
I remember when Woolworths in the UK had a firesale to get rid of surplus HD DVD stock.

This sounds very similar. Perhaps the begining of the end of Woolworths stocking Xbox, due to abysmal Euro sales...

You post an article about HD DVD to illustrate your point that the PS3 is doing better in Europe? That's grasping at straws there bud.

Besides June.. the PS3 has been barely beating the 360.
so where do you get murdering from?

It kind of shows the level of paranoia PS3 owners have when they're saying "10k is nothing to brag about" when nobody's bragging.
Then they go on to say "the PS3's been murdering the 360 all year," yet, other than the month MGS4 was released, the PS3 has been winning by between 10-20k. So, a 10k advantage is only "murdering" the competition when it's the PS3 doing it to the 360, I suppose.
This stuff is priceless!!!

The article says that Madden did well across ALL platforms, which isn't correct at all. The 360 reined supreme with over 1 million sold, the PS3 did about 600,000 (respectable), but the Wii only managed to get 150,000... sad when you think about how many Wii's are out there. Obviously, the Wii crowd couldn't care less about Madden.

To put things in perspective, if the ps3 were to continue to barely outsell the 360 at a pace of 15k consoles per week, than sony's console would finally catch up to the 360 in terms of sales roughly around the spring of 2015. Lets check the math: 15k consoles a week times 52 weeks a year equals 780,000 consoles a year. It would take 6 and a half years at this pace for sony to close the 5+ million unit lead that microsoft is currently holding. I actually own both machines and think that they each, in their own way, offer unique experiences. But this race is over. Maybe it is time for Sony to start thinking about next-next-gen.

It's not surprising that ps3 sales have slumped. It's an awful console. We've got both consoles in my flat. All we use the PS3 for is playing blue ray and high stakes poker.
For the price of a PS3 you can buy a 360 and a blue ray player!
After that you'll have a console with a really big user base, far superior arcade games, more exclusive games, and most of the games running better.
Not only that but sony aren't really on any moral highground over microsoft, they produced a stupid shape console. It feels plasticy
