Previously, Bethesda made it known that Fallout 3 was getting heat from various game ratings boards around the globe and just revealed that they've removed a drug reference in all versions. A change across the board that'll make the UK, Australia and U.S. versions all the same.
Bethesda's Pete Hines confirmed that they removed the real-world drug Morphine from Fallout 3 due to ratings board issues, opting to replace it with the not so real-world drug called "Med-X". Though, in a statement from Hines to Joystiq, he makes it clear that the drug reference was the only change made to the UK, Australia and US versions mentioning that Bethesda hasn't toned down the violence or bloody dismemberment effects. Just no morphine, because drugs are bad, kids, drugs are bad.

Well, sounds fine to me. I am looking forward to shooting up, killing stuff very violently, and running around with big guns. Think they will include a content filter? Ha! Not likely. Sorry kids, blood and guts are for responsible grown ups.

references to real world drugs are bad, but blowing someones head off is OK?
cant the devs just make the game bloody & drug reference heavy as they want & just let the ratings board give the game an 18/M certificate?

The short answer is no. Because some countries' ratings boards will refuse to give a rating to some things, which means that mainstream retailers in that country won't stock it. Which means that it's sales are essentially zero in that country.

Wow now imagine if the Game Ratings Board ran the world. There would be no morphine. Lets think about how much more pain i would have been in when my finger was sliced in half and hanging? Btw if you get offered a ibuprofen at a hospital DONT TAKE IT lol. One pill the size of a nickel or so cost me 10 bucks great eh.
