During the QuakeCon keynote, id Sofware's programming wizard John Carmack made it known that the Xbox 360 version of id's upcoming Rage will look worse than it's PC, Mac, and PS3 counterparts. The reason, according to Carmack, is purely a compression issue and "has nothing to do with the power of the Xbox 360 hardware." The compression needed to squeeze the game onto two DVDs will apparently affect the visual fidelity, and Carmack noted that the royalty fee that a third disc would require is too high. Carmack added that he hoped Microsoft would "make a concession."
Given that Rage is likely to be a very high profile title and that Microsoft has been known to give assistance to developers -- specifically, working with Capcom to accomodate Street Fighter II HD -- it's at least possible they may do the same for id. We're fairly certain the company probably isn't too keen to see a multiplatform title look noticably worse on its platform either. Here's hoping MS sees the light.
Yeah, Blu-Ray is great if you don't mind filling up your HDD with required preinstalls for some games because of the slow disc read speed. Few people can argue that the extra disc space is needed for current gen gaming whether it come through muliple discs or a larger format, but without adequate read speed you are still selling your consumers short. Blu Ray was really too young to try to implement in the current gen consoles.
Wow, I guess some of you didn't like what I said. I don't think that it should have been taken as a compliment that nearly two years into the console's lifecycle there have been only two games that needed the extra space that Blu-Ry provides. Unless the difference is significant, I'll still probably buy this for the 360 anyway. I haven't played a game on my PS3 for at least two months, cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market FTW.
Seeing as though MGS4 is half cut-scenes, they could just stream those in High Def to your 360 from the net, and fill a single layer DVD required for the actual playable content ;)
All kidding aside, this looks interesting. Its a typical old school FPS, which Ive always enjoyed. Either way, since this will be available on PC, i will be getting the PC version so i can enjoy true 1080p (and hopefully play that on my LCD TV on the couch, assuming its games for windows), which no console will be able to offer. X number of DVDs mean nothing when you have 3TB at your disposal.
Microsoft's lack of strategic planning to include a larger media format as standard for its system has come full circle. I understand the economics of the decision and it has ultimately made the 360 more affordable, and thereby, more appealing but.....it's finally catching up to us. If MS can only find a way to incorporate the new 42GB DVDs...
Q3A for XBLA being put on hold makes me more sad, honestly.
I don't have a PS3 so if I bought or rent this, I'd get over it since I'd have no first-hand source of comparison... but even so, it sucks and I imagine we'll be hearing things like this more and more as this generation nears its end.
It's pretty clear that blu-ray is here to stay, either way. Both Sony and MS will obviously go with it next generation... makes me wonder what the next hardware feature will be that one of them will lack lol.
The problem here isn't even so much the limitations of the DVD, it's the fact that Microsoft charges (apparently pretty high) royalty fees for extra discs.
Yeah, really? The royalty limits is a secondary problem, existing simply due to a primary problem. The primary problem is STILL the capacity of the DVD.
Having to use multiple DVDs is a very minor problem and, at worst, an inconvenience. The thing that's causing the Xbox 360 version to be inferior to the PS3 version isn't the capacity of the DVDs, since it wouldn't be a lot of effort to just use more of them, but the fact that Microsoft penalizes developers for their own failings.
Umm, who cares. Seriously. So you have to change discs once or twice. Big whoop.
After playing Blue Dragon, I came to realize that this isn't that big of an issue. The amount of times I had to put in a different disc compared to the amount of gameplay was so little that it was barely noticeable.
Throw in the fact that we can copy an entire game over to the HDD starting with the fall update and this becomes a non-issue.
Umm. It's not a question of swapping disks. That wouldn't be a big issue. It's the fact that it's going to look worse on 360 because they have to compress the game on two disks because they can't afford the royalty fees. Do you even read the posts?
Well Carmack's almost certainly crappy game uses a fancy new technology to stream massive textures. These textures are so huge that you need a relatively tremendous amount of storage. Regular DVDs just don't cut it. That's the point of the post.
I guess that you missed my point. I find it funny that MS repeat history by not anticipating the need for more storage space just like their founder supposedly under-anticipated the market with the 640k remark.

I guess that makes it the second game to actually require a Blu-Ray release (after MGS4). Score another one for the PS3.

As far as reasons to own an xbox versus PS3, I guess that now makes the score about - Xbox 360: 100, PS3: 2
Don't be jealous of Xbox 360 because we have so many more titles than you to play. We didn't force you to spend your dollars on PS3, your choice.

42GB DVD's require a new reader. You'd probably be more likely to see a downloaded install than a 42GB DVD player.

The man clearly said that it was an "at this moment" thing.
What that means is that if MS does not charge too high of a royalty fee ID will put it on 3 disks and it will look just as good.
Do you guys read? It clearly states so on the report.
