Speaking on the subject of paying off publishers for exclusivity, Tretton told Joystiq "[Sony] invested so much money in the [PS3] hardware" that it simply "can't write checks for exclusive software."
While popular theory is that Microsoft paid Square Enix off for its recent handfull of upcoming releases, word around the industry campfire points at a decision made by Square Enix months ago to focus on multiplatform development that saw Final Fantasy XIII land on the Xbox 360. With a high install base and solid attach rate for the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe many developers are forgoing exclusivity in order to lessen the blow of "next-gen" game development. Capcom has been a prime example of this point with Devil May Cry 4; which saw better sales on the Xbox 360.
Regardless of the situation, Square Enix is happy to bring the experience to as many people as possible and as gamers we all should be too.

Oh, good. I was just about to say I'm disappointed with Sony... uh, period. You know what? Take Japan, we'll split Europe, and never show your face inside my borders again. If we want to play a game based on your acid trip with the neighborhood pedophile, we've got your number. Oh, and take anime with you, too- enough is enough with that crapanese nonsense.
However, I will trade you rights to rock the Nike Airs for the right to keep Japanese BBQ and Sushi.
And the option to trade second round draft picks in 2010.

to an earlier comment, no, FFXIIIVersus is still SONY only (which kills SE's argument that they're making games available for everyone considering Versus is still SONY only, and Infinite Undiscovery is being made with MS and 360 only.. I still think there may have been some cash transaction) But I don't think it's a big deal that others get to play game. The only game I could think that should be offered to PS3 only owners is if they ever make another Jade Empire. Am I the only one who loved this game?!?!?

Bet the new install feature coming with the Dash board update is to lessen some of the CD swapping Final Fantasy 13 is going to require. Install the game engine onto the harddrive, load the game world from the DVDs.

@ Matthew et al.
I'm tired about people talking about Fanboys who don't exist. I think the XBox is way overrated and the PS3 is underrated, naturally; I prefer the PS3. Yet I rarely see any rants from PS3 owners, only in the imaginations of X3F posters.
Really, who didn't see this coming? FF has been losing steam recently. Square needs to be on XBox. If you are a fan of Square, you are fan of this decision.
I could care less, but his generation calls for new exclusive third party IPs. Be a fan of the games first, consoles second.

If Square Enix respects Sony, they should make it time exclusive on the ps3. We 360 users can wait. Simultaneous release for both system is just disrespectful when it was first annouced to be ps3 exclusive.

If that were true, the PS3 would be seeing a release of Infinite Undiscovery. Not to mention most third party releases that come out on both systems tend to sell better (better, not more; we're talking ratios here) on the PS3 (from what I recall at least).

Also DMC is huge is Japan where the PS3 has a big install base."
Odd, I thought Jack Tretton was quoted saying:
"He was quick to stress that the game remains a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but that "seeing as there isn't that big of a [PS3] installed base in [there], I don't know how big of a coup that is for us."
Is there something you know that he doesn't?

I understand they're disappointed,
but its their (SCE) fault.
Look at the their hardware(PS3) sales....
And development for some games being discontinued (like Getaway)
Seeing those negative things....
you can't really blame Square-Enix
making FFXIII multiplatform...
