I've been playing single player mostly, it's the bread and butter of the game.
I'll hop on multiplayer when my buddies start sending me several invites...I like Free Mode and Cop's N Crooks the best.

i've been playing half and half, i really can't tell which one i enjoy better. Rockstart did an awesome job on both aspects and I'm truly impressed. sorry to those that have glitch and freezing issues tho. :(
NG2 will be fun and I'm looking forward to it. but how can it take the Live spot really? there's no multiplayer to push it that extra edge.

I shocked actually. I really didn't realize that the multi-player component of this game was going to be so popular. I knew people would go on but I really figured more would do the single-player..at least at first for the first few weeks. *shrug*
Like the posters above, I have been sticking to the single player as well instead of the multi yet so.. I think I guess at this point it may only be going up.

See my post below. These rankings in no way say that GTA4's multiplayer was the most popular multiplayer this week.
Unless you were saying you were shocked that GTA4 (both single and multiplayer combined) as a whole was 1st, in which case you might be a little out of touch as that should have been obvious.

I haven't even tried the multplayer part of the game yet. Just been grinding away at single player. About 80% complete.

Working on the single player, the multi player only distracted me from my missions.
Whenever I'm in free mode with my buddies for more than 30 seconds. We start shooting each other out of boredom.

No way will NG 2 topple GTA 4. It doesn't even have close to the same market penetration (heh). NG2 will be great in my opinion, but GTA is a game that even the most casual gamers drool over.

Ninja Gaiden won't even make it to the top 5. It doesn't have the appeal that first person shooters and GTA have to a gaming community in general.
Plus, It doesn't look that good... Shoot me I know. But It's been a long time and it looks the same as the Xbox 1.

NG 2 graphics trump the original in every way.
you have just been shot.

Ditto. I resisted the urge to buy GTA IV. I am content with COD 4 for now.

The new maps alone have made it more than enough to keep me around for another few months ...

Haven't touched multiplayer yet. Some on my friends list keep sending me invites over and over but I'm never at a point where I'm not doing anything in single player.
Can you get some of the achievements in MP like the car rolls or stunts or bridges? If so I might hop into the MP aspect for that. I don't want to bother with death-matching or any other set game-type. I have plenty of other games for that. There is too much going on in GTA to waste time death-matching.

Ok, based on some of the comments here it would appear that people do not understand how these "Most played games on xbox Live" rankings work.
It counts any time that someone spends playing the game while they're on XBL. That means that when you play single player GTA4, it counts towards these rankings.
These rankings DO NOT say that GTA4's multiplayer is more played than CoD4's multiplayer or Halo 3's multiplayer. All that they say is that GTA4 (both single player and multiplayer) was played more this week, which should come as a surprise to basically no one.
PS. Good to see Gears still kickin' it in the top 5.

I'll get into the online play as soon as I get the single player side of the game nailed down 100%. IMO, I bought the game for the single player, and didn't care at all about the online play. Once I get bored with everything the city has to offer, I will move to online play... same method I used on Burnout Paradise. Know your envoronment completely and then move to online.

NG 2 topple GTA? No way... even if Richard has a big hard on for that game, it's not going to compete. I think COD4 will creep back in sooner or later.
