Gamestop is kinda crappy. The article says, with all the hype GTA is getting, why would they need any more attnetion? Easy. Two words: They suck. I actually pre-ordered the regular 360 edish of GTA, got it at midnight launch and recieved nothing cool as a pre-order promo. Actually I got a freaking retarded giant foam hand that says GTA. Big deal. I went back in yesterday looking for a copy of the Special edish for myself as I wanted the extra goodies and I was going to give the regualr edish to my bro. Well, they were all out of everything, both editions for 360. I did not ask about ps3 cause I don't have one. Well, he said they might get some regular copies in within a few days, but no special edish any more as it was a pre-order special thing. I call my local Best Buy and asked if they had GTA. Yes. Do you have the special edish? Yes. Could you put one on hold for me? No, we have about 80, so you really don't need us to. I cruised over and sure enough they had more Special and regular editions than there are people in the city. Pretty cool. That just goes to re-affirm my dislike for gamestop and like for best buy.
Now getting back to the article: Sure, they need a deal to get you into the store being that their secret weapon is sold out and they have nothing left to offer. Gotta do something to try and compete with the other better guys. Oh well. This is my opinion. I think I will never go to GS again. The only reason I pre-ordered there is cause I had just moved to the area and it is about 2 blocks from home, whereas Best Buy is a bit farther and I did not know at the time where they were. I have regretted not pre-ordering elsewhere ever since. Oh well. Too bad. I learned from my mistake. No offense to those who do like GS, but I am in the faction of disliking them, and this is just one reason why, in addition to their crappy exchange rates and horrible prices on used games. many times I can find new games at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, or the internet for cheaper than they want used games. Pathetic.

long, but true. Most of their used games are 5 dollars off the new price :\ And their buyback prices are silly.

As to them holding a game for you, they've had that policy in place for quite a while now, and most retailers actually have that same policy for new releases...

They make so much more in used game sales than GTA4 could ever bring them. Used games are, more or less, 100% profit.

Do you work retail? Do you know how much stores pay for new 360 games? 30 bucks. OMG! That's 100% profit, too! Evil Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, etc. But because Gamestop is transparent, and any self-entitled schmuck can feel slighted when they try to trade in their used crap, that store gets the trendy hate.
People need to educate themselves before they try to educate others.

actually i work at a best buy and our discount is 5% above what best buy pays, and buying a game on my discount is 50 something. Therefore stores don't pay 30 dollars per game... more like 45ish

@ salty : 30 dollar game charging 60 is 100% markup, paying someone 5 bucks for a used game and charging 55 for it is nearly 100% profit. Don't drop the education word if you haven't received enough of one to differentiate between the two terms.

Actually I *do* work in supply chain and inventory management. The price of a $60 game is generally in the high $40s to low $50s.
So no, the margins on new game sales are very, very low.

me suspects gamestop has way to much used on their inventory. its kinda hard to get rid of so many games when even for used are so over priced. seriously 55 dollars for most used popular games and 50 dollars for some others. Sure there are some other cheap used ones but they most likely suck.

True, but I have always had luck with them doing that. Sometimes all you need to do is ask. Had they not had 80 in stock, the lady said they would have. I guess it depends on who you talk to.

Going into gamestop feels like going into a smaller, nerdier Wal-Mart, minus the shoes made with child labor. There were tons of really great local game stores that I gave patronage to, but when Gamestop arrived in the mall, and then down the street, and then 3 miles out of town, and ate up the Rhino games, and merged with the EB, there was no escaping them, and all of the local stores closed down in the same year.
