Hopping over to the software side of life, February was stellar for Xbox 360 games seeing five of the ten top spots. Among the big winners was Call of Duty 4, Devil May Cry 4 and our friends at Harmonix were finally able to break into the top ten with Rock Band selling 161.8K units. Click towards the break to get your fill of February NPD hardware and software sales and let's just hope March brings a turnaround. Otherwise we have a feeling the big guys in Redmond may be forced to do some North American price cutting to stay competitive and strike fear in the eyes of their enemies.

Good to see Lost Odyssey that high up.
Also, I've started seeing stores with actual 360's in stock... so we'll see what happens next month.

So are the NPD figures US or worldwide?
I can see Rock Band doing a bit better if it ever gets it's Euro release.
And doesn't the Wii face the same problems as the 360? (Stock shortages.) Doesn't seem to be affecting them much!!

Easier to make wiis vs the 360s apparently.
I think sony and MS should take a cue from Nintendo.
Bundle a POS game with a controller = consistent top 10 sales of the "software".. =)

Actually it is. That simply means Nintendo is able to produce more Wii's than Microsoft is able to produce 360s - not to mention that the Wii is vastly inferior tech wise and I am sure alot less problematic to make. That doesnt mean that either are lying, Microsoft and Nintendo are both making as many as they can, and both are selling at or above as many as they can make. If Nintendo were able to crank out 700k units a month right now, I am sure they would sell, and they would still be experiencing shortages (at least for awhile, take away the shortage and Ty beanie babies lost their value, consumers also lost interest, same could happen with the Wii, though doubtful).

Depends what retail store you are talking about, and how urban the area is, etc. At my Gamestop, the 360s have been selling out quite frequently, and for awhile we didnt have ANY (no Elites, no Pros, not even any Arcades)... PS3s there are a pile of sitting there, Wiis are like gold, and 360s are not quite Wii level of course, but still sell pretty briskly.

So, to believe MS's explanation, we also understand that this number also represents their production maximum, which I don't buy given the holiday numbers.
Then, again, they might be using up a lot of units to replace RROD consoles.

Actually, it means this is how many they PLANNED on producing for xxx time-frame. Not necessarily their maximum production amounts per month. They plan these things well in advance, and cannot forcast increased demand above and beyond what they expected, only revise further production amounts.
Further, RROD consoles I doubt, the rate has been on the decline for awhile now, and not to mention around the holidays they likely had increased stock for increased demand - but even then still didnt have enough to prevent shortages...

And the 360's attach rate grows again.
I have a feeling the March sales should pick up a fair bit...

i believe its only US; games sold in other parts arent mentioned at all, and PS3 has killed world wide, the disparity will between 360 and PS3 would be greater. I think it does depend on the region, because in Miami and the rest of south florida, you can get a 360 pretty much everywhere. The market may saturated, plus all the RROD's, I wouldnt be surprised if MS has held back on production, and maybe pulled in a bunch.

Shortage...? Not in my part of the world. 90 perecent of the people I see online claim that they notice no shortages either.
Sounds like an excuse. Dont know why they need one though...the 360 is doing just fine. I would be more worried about the RRoD though

Hopefully this year the PS3 will have the game attach rate that XBox does. And I doubt XBox will grasp the lead in NPD anytime soon if ever. With Metal Gear Solid coming out, Sony knows people like me will get a PS3. I was going to get an Xbox, but with Marvel's MMO being pulled and the fact there are more threads in XBox's technical support forum than any other forum on their own site...I thought the PS3 was the better investment. I thought I had long to wait for games, but there are a lot of great titles and IPs coming out to keep me gaming through the summer. Still, I wish we had Mass Effect on PS3. Once PS3 kicks it in gear, XBox will likely lose that exclusive. Personally, I don't think Grand Theft Auto IV will help sales of either console. I don't recall of any blockbuster game XBox has coming out in the future. I know Sony has the aforementioned Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet, and FFXIII to look forward to. That will definitely boost their sales IMHO. Plus there is HOME, which is Sony's social networking MMO that is FREE to all subscribers (at least for now). You might have heard of it. Microsoft needs to come out with the XBox 720 by 2010 to stay current if Sony for once fulfills their ambitions. Still it is the games that move consoles. So I doubt HOME will impact the sale of the consoles, but I think it will impact the quality of games and developer's eagerness to work on the platform of choice for people like me. Yet I'm planning to get an XBox or a Wii in the next few months. Nintendo is putting out a lot of shovelware, so I'm leaning toward an XBox. But I can find an XBox anywhere. Wiis are much, much harder to find. What they say about "shortage" is a crock - corporate spin. They have to keep stock prices up, people. This is M$. You know what really matters. Yep, the bottom line. That being said, NPD shows all consoles to be doing quite lovely.

Xbox having shortages? At over 2 years of manufacturing experience? ROFL, i think they confused their system with the Wii, since both are white systems ROFL Microsoft, knock it off, it's not April Fool's yet..
