WoW players: we have all your patch 2.4 news!

This Week in HD DVD: the final edition

This is the curtain call, there is no more to see. Wipe the tears from your cheek fellow fanboys, for this will be final installment of This Week in HD DVD.

Toshiba and Microsoft no longer support the HD DVD format, so we'd feel guilty and a bit dirty to continue our own support of a format that deserves to simply rest in peace. You will be missed HD DVD. That's a fact. You were strong and wise, but you were unable to gather support by the masses and as a result, you passed at a young age. This is it, the final curtain call. Goodbye HD DVD and goodbye to This Week in HD DVD. We promised we wouldn't cry ...

HDDVD and Blu-ray use the same codecs!!! I am sick of tired of the amount of misinformation spread about these two formats. The only difference between BD and HDDVD is a slightly higher capacity and potentially higher bit-xfr rate for BD. Both formats (BOTH DAMMIT!) use MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, and SMPTE VC-1.

So Fanboys - please stop talking b.s. and do some research on your own bloody products!!!

Remer - check your facts PLEASE! Both formats had 'lossless' audio including TrueHD and DTS Uncompressed - in fact, HDDVD included as standard before before Blu-ray did.

More fanboy b.s.

A lot of people are saying "MS made a mistake not putting HD DVD in their player default" or "MS should have been pushing HD DVD harder"
But what's funny is, we keep criticising PS3 for doing that exact same thing...?
I probably wouldn't have gotten an XBox 360 if I would've known it was +$150 just because of some stupid HD format I would never use.

Marty - Blu-ray had NO advantage sound-wise compared to HDDVD. It was a larger capacity (by about 20 gigs only) - that's it. Same video codecs, same lossless audio.

Check your facts, mate.

Owning both the ps3 and 360 I must say Im sad that HDDVD lost. I have so many more movies on HDDVD than I do on br. The pic quality has been better on a good portion of those movies and I liked the web enabled, Combo disc and complete standard of HDDVD.

If you guys are looking for t2 or Total recall you can get them from exploited cinema for 21bucks.

That said HD DVD could conceivably entice a studio back to its side or cut hardware prices even further and turn the tide. But as it stands now, Blu-ray has a commanding lead in the format war.
