Our mother ship Joystiq just received a tip confirming that the Xbox Live Video Marketplace will be rolling out to Europe rather soon, but it will only be available to a few countries. The European Video Marketplace confirmation comes straight off of a 4200 Microsoft points card (that was manufactured in Ireland) and on the back it gives all the deets. The card states that "great movies" (no television episodes?) can be rented using the points
only in the UK, Ireland, France and Germany. Interesting ...
We've been
promised a Canadian and European Video Marketplace rollout by the year's end, but Microsoft has been hush-hush surrounding the details and so far nothing concrete has surfaced. But now, with our Microsoft points card smoking gun evidence, we're going on record to say that next week's Fall Update will usher in Video Marketplace love for more than just the United States. Though, it'll be interesting to see how entertaining the limited and somewhat crippled XBVM will be.

Hear hear, i accept the licensing was an issue but the delay has been absoluetly rediculous, theres not that much of a difference in UK (as an example) and US law in regards to copyright and distribution to warrant making us wait THIS long for it.
I wouldnt be nearly as annoyed by it if (as Mark said) we weren't already paying so much more for a reduced service, and if theres no TV episodes as well...
i just hope they dont make a similar hash out of IPTV when (god forbid) it starts to get sorted...

Sadly, this all has to do with licensing complications. MS will have to purchase a new license for EACH item on Video Marketplace in order to secure distribution rights in the new territories. This will cost a small fortune, and MS needs to know that the Canadian market will be profitable before expanding here. Also, one has to consider our almost non-existant piracy laws regarding digital media. Releasing a digital distribution service in Canada must be a little intimidating!

does piracy problems really apply to a closed media like xbox live ? movies you downloaded cant be copied, not yet at least, this isnt a computer with torrent software ... anyway, I hope they do lauch it in Canada and Europe this year. Its awfull to be left in the dark like the had to do last year.

I'm in the good ol' US of A, but it would be cool for everyone to enjoy ALL of the benefits that xbox live has to offer. I wonder what is keeping this held up? Is it technical or just red tape? Hmmm.... Keep your fingers crossed people.

They're still far too dear for just a rental, I mean 480 points just to watch a movie once? Not to mention the bandwidth killing 6-8 gigabyte download.

I'm pretty sure at MS E3 press conference they promised XBLVM for Canada this fall. I'm guessing it won't be out until 08. Its just like IPTV....very quiet.

I think its great that the Europeans will be getting the VMP, at least some of them. I'm sure the others will over time but it is a matter of copyrights. As for Canada I'm stumped too on why you can't have it over there yet. Watch when this comes up in Europe some people will wine and say they're getting the shaft when Doctor Who or something isn't on their VMP.

Maybe it does not mention Canada because the points only work on European Xbox's?

Back of the net!! I actually did a double-take when I saw the news post!
I hope this turns out to be true. We've waited far too long!! I've got to admit, I'm a little excited!
Hopefully I can spend Christmas stuffing my face, playing games and watching HD movies..... Jesus would've wanted it.
