So, let's say you opened up the Xbox 360 pictured above. Would you consider it to be a
working console? Apparently that's what the fine customer service folks at an unnamed electronics store thought, as the above 360 was returned and accepted, rewarding the
customer thief with a full refund. Upon closer inspection (by a learned scholar in the electronics department), it was discovered that the console in question had been completely gutted and subsequently stuffed with paper and the innards of a medical textbook. The cables in the box had been switched out as well, replaced with a standard computer VGA cable and an old printer cable. Granted, we're sure the console looked satisfactory with the faceplate attached, but even someone who knows nothing about electronics would find it odd that the rear A/V and power ports were empty. The fact that there were no controllers or hard drive in the box might have served as a red flag as well.
The thief may have gotten away with a 360, but we can rest assured that his console guts look as ugly as sin in the entertainment center.

Well, at least he will have better ventilation and therefore less chance of the RED RING OF DEATH. This is lame, btw.

This person likely did it for a RRoD system. Though odd considering, why not just swap the entire unit and not just the guts? It could be a mod project. However, no case could produce additional overheating as a case is usually designed to direct airflow in certain directions ( over certain components, ... ) using fans to push / pull air along specific paths to make cooling more efficient.

My local Gamestop always test returned 360's, I'm sure the "unnamed electronics store" will implement this policy now, haha

So that's what I should have done to mine before I returned it to Best Buy's Product Replacement Plan company...Then again, it would have to be working for me to do that and be happy with 360 guts in my room.

Also, now that my pro console died, I'm looking into getting an Elite, but they're all sold out online and my local Best Buy doesn't have any in-store. Anyone got any tips on how they got theirs? I'll have to get it from Best Buy, so keep that in mind.

Maybe he returned it as "unopened" and "new". Some stores won't check the box if it appears to be unopened. Even if they did open it for a physical inspection, the xbox comes in a sleeve, and is easy to repackage. Also, he may have done this overnight or same day... which would also expedite the return procedure, and probably not garner any extra attention. Of course, this is more likely to happen in a Walmart, Target, or even Best Buy.

Just like in Germany when some guy returned a computer (he filled it with potatoes) and then tried to return the one they gave to replace it. Luckily they caught on. Can this guy still use Xbox Live?

Given the number of times the "unnamed" company has ripped people off and provided poor customer service on legit matters, I really don't feel sorry for them.

It was at Walmart, I'm guessing.
I looked around at that site, and in some of his other posts, the poster mentions that he works at Walmart in San Antonio.

The editor wrote that the thief may have gotten away with a 360 but his entertainment center looks like ugly as sin with its console guts in it. It may not actually look like that if this guy ordered an Xbox360 mod case and just put it in that... so he probably did just that. Wow, if I were a crook that's what I would do but I am not. Besides, although I have the Pelican Cooler which keeps my 360 humming really cool while lying down I don't anticipate any RROD from overheating but hey, I would not take the chance of violating the new extended three year warranty that MS graciously gave every 360 owner. That guy was brave though... I would have been nervous as hell walking into a store with gutted 360 or any electronic equipment for that matter. But hey, I guess if you are thief those things don't matter.
